Winter sounds like…the slow creaking of a tree branch bending under the weight of snow and ice, followed by the rending crack of it finally breaking. The dusty hiss of steam heat, hushing and reassuring. The jingling of silver bells, ringing and pure, and the gentle crispy crack of barely-there ice over a puddle. Crunching footsteps, compacting powder into silhouettes of your shoes. The slick crinkle of wrapping paper, and the wailing wolf-howl of a January wind. The razor-sharp snick of ice skates, slicing Spirograph lines across the glossy whiteness of a frozen lake. The metallic slither of a baking sheet sliding into the oven, laden with soon-to-be cookies. The strange muffled silence in the heart of a snowstorm, and the scratchy strains of an old record, the singer long gone. The prickly shush of snow in the windshield of your car. The hollow silence of the pink hours of the morning, broken by the rasp of an ice-scraper on someone’s windows. The fluffy “whomp” of winter coats pulled from their hibernation, leaving a forest of wire hangers behind, rattling and chiming, giving off a silvery murmur. The crystalline shatter of an ornament dropped, and the fizzle of a struck match. The wind in the eaves, and the hollow stillness of a frigid, clear night.
Winter sounds like…snow and silence.

in the meantime: study, journal, read more books, sit in silence, listen to music, take walks, take the stairs, do more things alone, do more things with friends, take notice of the small wonders of the world, create a sacred space in your mind

A cold day is infinitely better with a cup of hot coffee and a good book in your bag. Also, ice can be heartstoppingly beautiful if you can stay warm long enough to appreciate it.
