cannot BELIEVE the young wizards series by diane duane has barely been mentioned in the comments. a FANTASTIC series and a very literal application of showing magic as a language that must be learned and that requires a great deal of precision
it is VERY important to use correct variable names when identifying people. those names need to get more specific within a broader context
why is your teleportation spell so loud 🙄 if you add this ONE line you can avoid the displacement affect that makes a loud bang
hey what are the current coordinates for that planet. also what atmospheric conditions do i need to adjust these variables for
there is a literal computer programmer wizard. she is extremely competent at both computer programming and wizardry
I'm a big fan of wizards-as-programmers, but I think it's so much better when you lean into programming tropes.
A spell the wizard uses to light the group's campfire has an error somewhere in its depths, and sometimes it doesn't work at all. The wizard spends a lot of his time trying to track down the exact conditions that cause the failure.
The wizard is attempting to create a new spell that marries two older spells together, but while they were both written within the context of Zephyrus the Starweaver's foundational work, they each used a slightly different version, and untangling the collisions make a short project take months of work.
The wizard has grown too comfortable reusing old spells, and in particular, his teleportation spell keeps finding its components rearranged and remixed, its parts copied into a dozen different places in the spellbook. This is overall not actually a problem per se, but the party's rogue grows a bit concerned when the wizard's "drying spell" seems to just be a special case of teleportation where you teleport five feet to the left and leave the wetness behind.
A wizard is constantly fiddling with his spells, making minor tweaks and changes, getting them easier to cast, with better effects, adding bells and whistles. The "shelter for the night" spell includes a tea kettle that brings itself to a boil at dawn, which the wizard is inordinately pleased with. He reports on efficiency improvements to the indifference of anyone listening.
A different wizard immediately forgets all details of his spells after he's written them. He could not begin to tell you how any of it works, at least not without sitting down for a few hours or days to figure out how he set things up. The point is that it works, and once it does, the wizard can safely stop thinking about it.
Wizards enjoy each other's company, but you must be circumspect about spellwork. Having another wizard look through your spellbook makes you aware of every minor flaw, and you might not be able to answer questions about why a spell was written in a certain way, if you remember at all.
Wizards all have their own preferences as far as which scripts they write in, the formatting of their spellbook, its dimensions and material quality, and of course which famous wizards they've taken the most foundational knowledge from. The enlightened view is that all approaches have their strengths and weaknesses, but this has never stopped anyone from getting into a protracted argument.
Sometimes a wizard will sit down with an ancient tome attempting to find answers to a complicated problem, and finally find someone from across time who was trying to do the same thing, only for the final note to be "nevermind, fixed it".

I bet octopuses think bones are horrific. I bet all their cosmic horror stories involve rigid-limbs and hinged joints.

I like the expression new-fangled. I don't know what it means for something to be fangled, but I sure as hell know it was recent

*grabs your hands and speaks to you in a tone that is so gentle* they/them pronouns stop being universal once you learn a person's pronouns. Sometimes that person's pronouns will include they/them and in that specific case you are allowed to keep using those pronouns for that person. In any case where you learn a persons pronouns and that person doesn't use they/them, you should no longer use those pronouns for that person. If you continue to use they/them pronouns knowing that person doesn't use them, you are now misgendering that person. Kindly stop doing that please. Thank you, I love you.

There's that poll going around about what you pretended to do as a kid, like, if you were a witch or a bride or a wizard or a wolf or something, but MY favorite preschool game was called GREEN, which was where I went around the classroom and gathered up as many green objects as I could and then went over to the windowsill and lined them up in different orders. Biggest to smallest. Lightest green to darkest green. Favorite to least favorite. And then I'd stare at them and think about how happy it made me that so many things could be green. Loved to play GREEN.
Also, yeah, don't worry, I know. I'm diagnosed.

”bi girls stop bringing your boyfriends to gay clubs” “just saw a man in a lesbian club” “keep seeing straight girls in lesbian groups” “why was there a man in the womens support group” how did you know they were men. oh it’s because they looked like men! that’s a completely valid reason and totally not indicative of any transphobic opinions! quick question how do you feel about butches and transmascs and trans women who don’t pass

a) nobody should ever be forced to carry a pregnancy on account of that being a torturous and violating thing to do
AND
b) the way people are encouraged to abort disabled foetuses betrays a deeply ableist and eugenic sentiment that should be questioned, and expectant parents should have access to more realistic information about what it means to have a disabled child
AND
c) focusing on the individual choices that individuals make with respect to abortion both leads you to ask all the wrong questions, and neglect to mention the systems of oppression that make such environments emerge
AND
d) once again: everyone should still have access to an abortion regardless of literally anything else and anyone who says otherwise is deeply suspicious

I’m not sure how many people realize that there’s a way in which hurt/comfort is actually very kinky, because at its core you’ve got this emotional power exchange fantasy where one character is vulnerable and helpless and the other takes care of them. In the case of stories involving grievous injuries, where someone is bedridden for a long time, you often end up with two characters in a 24/7 total power exchange relationship without a safeword. It just doesn’t involve as many whips and dog collars.
