what's the general transfeminist opinion on the crossdressing on M*A*S*H? making a joke of Men In Dresses, or a reasonable use of gender nonconformism in the discussion of war, or somewhere in between?
***note, im mostly looking for transfem opinions on this. i am NOT looking for the opinions of ppl who think rocky horror was a victory for trans women lmao

I'm absolutely loving all the body surgery positivity I've been seeing recently. A huge part of cis propaganda is treating HRT and surgeries as simultaneously terrifying and disgusting, and I absolutely love to see people figuring back against that.

This guy is my new hero. I LOVE learning about native food plants that just grow everywhere without human help.
The database is a little clunky to use (especially on a phone), but still loads of excellent information.

I need perisex people to know that for intersex people CAFAB the entire external genital tubercle structure (clitoris/penis/clitorophallus) is often removed, or very little of it is left in the "clitoral reduction" variant of IGM.
Intersex people CAFAB and imposed female sometimes experience forced vaginal dilations in a doctor's office throughout childhood, in order to make the vagina large enough for 'use' by a future husband. This is painful and done regardless of whether or not the child protests. I've heard the response from the doctors and nurses compared to the way they respond to a child being scared of a necessary shot.
I also need people to know that of most surgical reassignment cases of intersex people, most of the time they are made "female" simply because it's easier for the surgeon to remove parts than it is to construct new ones. These surgeries are first and foremost cosmetic, do not forget that.
I may not be CAFAB but I give a shit about other people. I give a shit about medical rape even though I haven't been subjected to it. I give a shit about the life-long pain and sexual dysfunction these people face. I want you to give a shit about it too. Give a shit about intersex people even if you do not personally relate to us.

I haven't seen the new Lilo & Stitch and I'm not going to (and neither should you), and I'm not Hawaiian, so I'm not qualified to weigh in on how the remake butchers Hawaiian culture and the themes of the original (but you should go read what Hawaiian people have already written about that).
What stands out to me and I can talk about, though, is how I can see the Executive Meddling Logic in having Nani abandon Lilo, and I hate it. And it's reflective of... how much more limited Socially Acceptable Options for young women have gotten since 2002, and how much worse, in some ways, family structure shaming has gotten.
Like. In 2002, there was absolutely cultural stigma on a 19 year old woman acting as guardian for her orphaned younger sibling. That stigma forms the movie's central conflict, after all (although -- again, not Hawaiian, I can't speak to that -- as I understand it, that family structure is stigmatized in mainstream U.S. culture but not in Hawaiian culture, forming another big part of the central conflict). But there was enough of a counter-narrative that a major studio could make a mainstream movie depicting that stigma as wrong.
But in 2025, well, that would send the wrong message. Depicting a 19 year old woman as a capable sibling-guardian who doesn't see her younger sibling as ruining her life is, like. Too dangerously close to depicting her as a competent parent. Which is too dangerously close to promoting teen pregnancy. Or something. An inferior type of family absolutely cannot be a happy ending. A young woman can't want to take care of her little sister. That's not on the approved list of things she's allowed to want (she's not allowed to want to be a surfer either, despite the important role of surfing in Hawaiian culture, because surfing is silly and trivial, obviously; that's not on the Approved Life Path list).
Obviously there are orphaned siblings caring for their younger siblings in 2025 just as there were in 2002 and throughout human history, but it's not Middle Class Disney Family acceptable now. Like, in 2002, The Baileys (the imaginary middle class couple Chuck Schumer made up) might have thought "If we both die, I hope our young adult child can take custody of the younger one so they don't end up separated or in foster care", but in 2025, they wouldn't fathom such a thing. Real people might, but not The Platonic Ideal of Disney Family.

This has probably been said multiple times already, but the recent fixation on "Man In Dress" jokes as inherently targeting trans women is yet another symptom of trfs and their overzealous ilk's inability to do like. real material analysis and ACTUALLY get down to the roots of society's oppressive systems, or even to just let go of their hurt for five minutes (I know the argument is that they don't want to).
TERFs don't hate men and build conspiracies around this hate to justify it, they hate trans women.
Conservatives and the political machines they've built don't have an interest in upholding the cishetero patriarchy and punishing people they see as deviants, they hate trans women.
"Man In Dress" jokes do not make fun of people existing outside the gender binary and traditional gender roles, they are about trans women.
Like, I'm sorry, I don't want to minimize what being a trans woman is like in this political climate, but I think it's important to not lose sight of reality and fall into conspiracy: anti-trans sentiments and politics are about enforcing strict gender roles and a strict gender binary; the reason trans women are often their primary target is because as "men" (intentional use of quotes there) who reject cishetero masculinity, aka the power to assert themselves over others, they're seen as the maximum expression of this transgression, not because of who they really are, as trans women.
I know the difference feels non-existent most of the time, but if we really wanna liberate ourselves we have to keep this in mind.
I'm not gonna argue that the humor in "Man In Dress" jokes doesn't come from transmisogyny and jabs at queer (particularly gay men) culture: like I said the joke is about how ridiculous men existing outside their roles are, but this stereotype is still a very real an important part of queer culture (like. sometimes I feel I'm going insane. Are we now deciding to ignore the fundamental history of drag?? Is drag transmisogynistic??), and what this trope can do is shine a light on it, pay homage to it, have fun with it, imply a character's queerness, and more. It can be intentional.
Like. this is media analysis 101, what are we even saying?? "The fucking curtains are just blue"??
I love this ask.
