Celebrated for shaping some of the most beloved and groundbreaking animated series of our time, a powerhouse collection of creators including Pendleton Ward (“Adventure Time”), Rebecca Sugar (“Steven Universe”), Ian Jones-Quartey (“OK K.O.!”), Patrick McHale (“Over the Garden Wall”) is reuniting for a one-of-a-kind animated special so mysterious, even they don’t know what it’s about.
Adult Swim’s “The Elephant,” introduced by Adult Swim President Michael Ouweleen and this team, is an animated special where three animation teams are each responsible for one of three acts, without any knowledge of what the others are making. With Sugar and Jones-Quartey working as a duo and McHale and Ward overseeing their own separate parts, The Elephant is guided by “game masters” and “Adventure Time” veterans Jack Pendarvis and Kent Osborne, for a storytelling experiment that unfolds as a collaborative surprise, ultimately merging into a single, unexpected narrative.

Three-knife hairpin 三刀簪 (one for the country, one for the family, and one for oneself) was a popular headpiece among women in the city of Fuzhou, Fujian province.
Also known as "Three Hairpins” it consists of three small swords worn like hairpins, mostly made out of silver or white copper, and engraved with patterns.
There are various theories about the origin of the Three-Knife hairpin. The most popular one claims that it evolved from small sharp weapons worn by women during the Ming Dynasty in order to defend themselves against Japanese pirates raiding China’s coastline, by killing their enemies, or even committing suicide.

In June 2024, the three knives were selected as an intangible cultural heritage of Fuzhou, and more people became aware of this traditional clothing culture.

NME: Listen to Fiona Apple’s powerful first song in five years, ‘Pretrial (Let Her Go Home)’
Fiona Apple said in a press statement: “I was a court watcher for over two years. In that time, I took notes on thousands of bond hearings. Time and time again, I listened as people were taken away and put in jail, for no other reason than that they couldn’t afford to buy their way free. It was particularly hard to hear mothers and caretakers get taken away from the people who depend on them.”
“For the past five years, I have been volunteering with the Free Black Mamas DMV bailout, and I have been lucky to be able to witness the stories of women who fought for and won their freedom with the tireless and loving support of the leadership,” she continued. “I hope that this song, and the images shared with me, can help to show what is at stake when someone is kept in pretrial detention. I give this song in friendship and respect to all who have experienced the pain of pretrial detention and to the women of the group’s leadership who have taught me so much and whom I truly love.”
Donations to help those affected by pre-trial detention pay their bail and reunite them with their families can be made here. Additionally, you can find out more about the Free Black Mamas DMV here, and register here to volunteer for court watching to ensure fair rulings.
