Oh also, one more thing. I don’t like when people write Sonia hitting Eddie. I mean, it’s a valid take, sure. But like… there are different kinds of abuse. And you don’t have to tick all the boxes to make the character more sympathetic. 

Sonia psychologically abuses Eddie. She gaslights him, she makes him question his own self worth and capabilities, she manipulates him and guilt trips him constantly, she tries to enforce his dependency on her and makes him show deference to her in her own way (such as giving her a kiss goodbye every time he leaves the house). 

This is all abusive! There is a clear pattern of abuse. We don’t need physical violence to validate that! 

And it’s not in character for Sonia anyway? She never stands in Eddie’s way, she never tries to loom over him. The book keeps mentioning how huge she is, but her size is never used to threaten Eddie, it’s just used to make her seem pathetic because Stephen King hates fat women and finds them icky. Sonia never hits or disciplines Eddie, she never grabs him or anything. 

In the movie, when Eddie storms out, she calls after him in hysterics. But she lets him go. This is I think part of the psychological abuse. She tells Eddie he’s weak but she never tries to physically overpower her son, probably because she wants him to think that if he ever fought back he would be the aggressor hurting his poor mother, how could he? 

It’s this weird paradox where Sonia treats her son like he’s made of glass but is too timid to physically dominate him. She only has her manipulation and her words. The second Eddie stands up to her she wilts. 

So making Sonia beat Eddie in your fics… kind of erases all this nuance to her character and kind of flies against what kind of an abuser she specifically is. Also, Bev’s father is physically (and sexually) abusive. You don’t need the overlap. Again, if you’re centering the theme of abuse, include Bev, it’s a huge part of her story!

weak concept: eddie doesn’t find richie’s jokes funny and refuses to laugh at his stand-up shows or whatever i dont even understand this concept enough to reference it properly

powerful concept: not only does eddie find richie’s jokes hilarious but he finds the ones that are particularly bad EXTREMELY hilarious and when richie fails a joke at one of his stand up gigs in the dead awkward silence you can just hear eddie losing his absolute fucking mind in the front row and Richie just beaming up on stage despite no one else laughing

and later on richie just saying to some interviewer “yeah i can have an entire room laughing but if eddie isn’t laughing then the joke failed imo but if everyone else is frowning and eddie’s laughing then it was a good night”

anyway in this house we cater to aggressively supportive reddie get that eddie being cold shit outta here that boy SHRIEKS with laughter at richies jokes so much in the book he thinks he’s so amazing and ambitious LET HIM BE WILDLY IN LOVE AND ENTHRALLED WITH RICHIE TOZIER DAMN
