got a meta slowly rotating in my mind about how every time Viren tries to be the person Harrow "once believed me to be" he fucks up hilariously badly

like his entire sequence of choices in the magma titan arc can be read as him trying to do what he thinks Harrow would (should?) want, but then Harrow keeps flipping the script on him, and that's just so sad and funny to me

i was just sitting around thinking about jelly tarts and then i remembered that callum's and viren's dark magic dreams both featured a scene in the king's bedroom with a lost loved one and

I think you’re onto something 👀💦. I’m a firm believer it’s gonna be Callum who releases Aaravos! (Claudia had her chance and failed, Aaravos didn’t seemed worried, like he knew Callum would have the pearl…..)

Hmm…..but where does that leave Claudia?? This show loves tossing twists at us. The fandoms so certain we’re gonna have team Callum against the “evil villain” Claudia.

….But what if it’s gonna be team magefam who have to team up against Callum-vos? Or like you said, just an angry Claudia 👀

So

Aaravos used Viren to hatch their son and get to Xadia, but at the last moment Viren turned on him and refused to help him escape, even at the cost of his own life. There was nothing Aaravos could threaten or lure Viren with that he valued more than his own agency, so he walked away.

But Callum...

Callum has a big problem that'll probably need some dark magic to solve. He's got his favorite person's parents trapped and suffering, right at his fingertips, and he doesn't know how to help!

What's a guy to do?

Meanwhile Aaravos has had such success with tempting Claudia to do dark things for someone she loves...

Seems very possible that Aaravos will be able to successfully tempt Callum into attempting to free him so that he can free the moonfam for Rayla in exchange.

But what's really got me thinking is how Claudia will take it, if Aaravos leaves her after all this time.

Rayla took her almost-boyfriend, and now Callum takes her mentor, and then they get each other and everything they want while she has spent two years killing things and losing those she loves the most and getting more and more desperate to have everything she wants, and for what-

Hoo boy.

She could come out of this realization wanting to kill everyone involved, including Aaravos.

This quote is fascinating because it shows Viren knew exactly how Harrow felt on his last day.

But instead of showing understanding and empathy, Viren likely thought he needed to "get a grip", to be Harrow's unwavering pillar, especially after Sarai's death; he thought that should he happen to show any sort of doubt whatsoever, Harrow, that is, the whole kingdom, and the whole of human realms, would collapse.

And it's so sad because had Viren not been emotionally constipated and told it to Harrow, the king might have felt less alone, and therefore less likely to end his own life.

i think the only thing more fucked up than sir sparklepuff being a child created just for sacrifice is how happy and ready for it he is. he nods and smiles and seems disappointed when viren decides not to and stalks off.

and he doesn’t have a single fear of death or inkling of self preservation like every other living thing does because that’s just how he was made, twistedly. when everyone else has shunned him— he knows its the only purpose he was created for, the only purpose he serves, to be something special, something important, and he’s drawn toward it where anything else would run

i mean, these reactions aren’t nothing. he seems to understand what’s going on, he understands what Aaravos is saying and smiles at it, he seems dismayed hearing Viren will die and refuses to kill him, he seems pitying when Viren says he’s followed a dark path, he seems to reach up to Aaravos to ask him to do something about it

unrelated ish but + the reaching motif -> reaching up like Viren does whereas most other characters we see reaching are reaching down, inwards, or to the side

Fun fact: Viren is the only non-hostile chin grabber out there. Everyone else is mean about it (Amaya being the only mixed bag).
