I am an Emergency Department Registered Nurse and travel nurse!⠀ ⠀ I love seeing new places and experiencing how other people live, work, eat, etc. It never ceases to amaze me how diverse this world is. Everywhere I go impacts and changes me just a little bit, making me appreciate my life and where I’m from, and see it in a different light.⠀ ⠀ My recommendation to new travelers would be to try your absolute best to have an open mind and step out of your comfort zone. Say yes to every opportunity that comes your way, talk to strangers, accept the invitation, never turn down a meal that’s offered to you. My name is Emily and I am an ER nurse! ⠀ ⠀ I like to say I am traveling America witnessing the aftermath of some of the dumbest actions people chose to make. ⠀ ⠀ Traveling has given me the opportunity to experience cultures I will never live in forever, meet people I would never normally interact with, and push me far outside the range of my normal comfort zone. ⠀ ⠀ It’s one of the hardest yet most rewarding choices I have made. ⠀ ⠀ To all you new travelers out there or traveler want to be’s, stick with it.⠀ ⠀ It can be so scary and so challenging to start off this journey, but remember your reasonings for doing this in the first place. Hold on to the sweet moments in life and savor every opportunity you have to be with people that you love. ⠀ ⠀ It made me realize how much I have taken the feeling of community for granted my whole life! I’m a travel nurse. I work in the ICU. I do short term contracts at hospitals that are short staffed and need help.⠀ ⠀ I love meeting people when I travel. I tend to keep in touch with people I’ve met on the road even years later. I’ve had several come visit me here at home. Learning new things about different cultures also keeps me going⠀ ⠀ I would recommend new travelers to not be afraid. World seems like a scary place from the comfort of your couch. My specialty is ICU travel nursing.⠀ ⠀ What I love about traveling is being able to go to new places all the time. Not only go work in different states but having the opportunity to take time off frequently to take big trips and travel the world. ⠀ ⠀ Another thing I love about it is not having to work the holidays. If you plan your assignments accordingly you can plan to be off December and enjoy time with family.⠀ ⠀ What I recommend new travelers is to just do it. At first being the new kid can be challenging and the whole process with recruiters can be some times frustrating but just stick to it. This is an amazing opportunity we get with this career and its very worth it. ⠀ ⠀ Also, work with many companies and always compare pay packages. I traveled in the ER for 2 years, just recently switched specialties to cath lab. So I took a perm job in Asheville, NC to learn the ropes!⠀ ⠀ My favorite thing about traveling is the feeling that total freedom and unending adventure gives me - we are in such a unique profession that allows us to be able to travel AND make money, see new places and experience new people. The adventure is what drives me! ⠀ ⠀ But most importantly, it’s the people you meet along the way. I have best friends all over the country now and I am SO thankful for all of them! I saw a quote this year that perfectly sums it up - “You will never be completely at home again because part of your heart will always be elsewhere. That’s the price you pay for the richness of loving and knowing people in more than one place”.⠀ ⠀ I would recommend that ALL new travelers have at least 2 years experience in their specialty before they start. ⠀ ⠀ Some people believe they can do it before then, but unless you are confident in ALL of your skills in ANY situation that can be thrown at you, please don’t attempt it. ⠀ ⠀ I’ve gotten anywhere from 6 hours to 2 days worth of orientation at all of my travel sites so please do not expect to be babied. I'm an ICU nurse currently. I love to travel because I have so many new amazing friends and have gotten to experience new places especially the amazing hiking with my travel buddy, my dog. ⠀ ⠀ I would tell new travelers not to be afraid to try new things. I’m an Travel nurse & I practice in the ICU.⠀ ⠀ I love traveling because it forces out of your comfort zone, allows you actually experience a place because you’re not just visiting for a week or two, I love the people I meet along the way, the ability to take time off between assignments and go places and I love the fact I can use travel nursing as a vessel to determine where I’ll plant roots eventually. ⠀ ⠀ I’d tell someone to get two years of experience in your specialty before EVER thinking of traveling. I’ve been a nurse for 7 years and I usually am more experienced than most of my night shift coworkers.⠀ ⠀ Be okay with being floated to any unit. Also most importantly, you need to be okay with being alone and being lonely sometimes so be sure to like the company you keep (yourself). If you can’t handle that, maybe you’re not ready.
