I think I encountered the possibility earlier on, when all the Oscars whooha was happening, of living in another way, should we say. People would say “why don’t you come out to LA and have your own company ?”, things like that. And I thought “Then who would I know ? Where would all my friends be ?” I have this habit of continuity, I love continuity, the continuum of life, knowing people for a long long long time. And if you do that of course you haven’t got any chance of changing because they’d be the first ones to turn around and say to you “what do you think you’re doing ? You’re being an arse !”

         ‘ you’re going to be late if you don’t get out of here, maisie. ’ ruth knew that margot hung around in the morning because she was worried. worried that ruth would sit in the same place all day … worried that she wouldn’t eat a thing … worried that she’d drive herself up a wall trying to grade papers that were quite a few years old. margot takes a bite out of her breakfast bar and clips her ID badge to the pocket of her work polo, ‘ ah - i know, i – hm, ’ she tosses the bar in the sink and steps into her shoes, lifting one foot at a time for ruth to tie while she tosses her own hair up into a messy bun. ‘ i’m going to leave the car here, today - yeah? it’s supposed to be nice out … you could take a drive, maybe? and if you’re feeling good about being out you can pick some new poinsettias for inside the house! all great things! you’re going to do great and if you’re not feeling great, that’s okay. just call me and we’ll talk it through. ’ she kisses her wife on the lips and then the forehead and shouts a ‘love you a bushel and a peck!’ before jogging out of the house and onto their front porch to wait for her ride.
