I want the writer’s strike to last until they get everything they demand and more. I want the SAG strike to last until AI is entirely forbidden across the board in the entire industry. I love the idea of dead gods. Not in the sense of “hey i killed something supernaturally strong” but in the sense of “i killed it and it’s still a god.” It is still worshipped. prayers are still answered. miracles are performed in its name, even as it lies pierced by a thousand swords and burning with chemical fire. even as it drifts through vacuum, decapitated and bleeding molten rock. in cosmic spite of being shot through each eye and hurled into a plasma reactor, it still radiates the power of the divine in a way that primitive death cannot smother. the nature of godchild is not so simple as to be tied to the mortality, or immortality, of any living being.

It started when a young girl's pup went missing. The thing had barely been out of her sights for more than a second, and suddenly it was gone. She was beyond comfort, but no one mourned with her. Mourning would mean accepting that something had happened, and people were far too frightened for that. Be glad it was the pup that went, and not you, her grandmother told her.

Next went the shepherd's sheep. Three of them, while his back was turned. They didn't disappear in the night, didn't get snatched while going to and from pastures. One day he simply turned around, and he was three sheep short. It was like whatever had taken them, wanted him to know. It was a blow to him, but the village didn't worry, so long as it was just the sheep.

When five cows, large and fat from years of care and hard work, disappeared in broad daylight, people started to finally admit that something was happening. Something out there was hungry, and angry, and toying with them. Travelers to and from Firgrove were advised to stay on the roads, residents were advised to stay indoors. The rangers had sighted a bear, it was said, and they were working on tracking it down. Half lies were how Jorvik operated, you sprinkle a little bit of truth into a comfortable, easily digestible story, and everyone agrees in tandem that such is the way Jorvik works. It's a normal island with normal problems. No one dared venture off the road to prove otherwise.
