Final physical Model
For my particular design I thought It was important that I also include a physical model of my work. By making a physical model I believe that you are more easily able to see the form and design as with the physical model that are very close images. With this model you are also able to see the texture of the pahoehoe lava flow texture that I have implemented throughout my design.

Final Write up!!!!
In the 1930’s Mount Street in Auckland CBD was home to a live-in care and hospital facility for disabled children. The building is now remembered and honored as a part of ‘Auckland university of technology’s ‘Dadly foundation Building’ better known as WW building to students.
The bathhouse design has been inspired by historic volcanic landmarks which remain in proximity to the Auckland CBD. The materiality and design of the Bath House aim to create texture gestures that bring the bathhouse back to its design routes of a ‘Pahoehoe lava field’ and create an intimate experience of the volcanic environment. The bath house has been designed to revitalize the body through using volcanic healing materiality
There is immediacy in the relationship between the materiality of the original Dadly building and the newly designed bathhouse. Volcanic rock and gestures used in the original Dadly building have a clear relationship with the bathhouse design. The scoria used in the original building has inspired the meaning and design of the bathhouse. Materiality throughout the bathhouse is a dominant element of what makes the bathhouse so intimate and experiential for the user.
A dark concrete in the texture of the pahoehoe lava flow lines the entire space. A Pahoehoe lava field is a place where for as far as the lava reached there is nothing other than volcanic rock. By using one material throughout the entire space, I am creating an intimate space where the user is fully submerged in the experience of swimming in a lava field.
People Are so caught up in their busy lives in the Auckland CBD that they begin to forget what nature has to offer them. The Scoria wall from the original building has inspired me to create a Volcanic inspired bathhouse that is bringing volcanic activity from all around Auckland into the heart of the city in a form that is going to help relax and revitalize.
sauna bath-
A sauna bath inspired by the volcanic materiality of steam is giving back to the body by helping relax and revitalize the skin, muscles, and heart health.
Volcanic clay baths-
Volcanic clay is found to be excellent for revitalizing the skin through the way it reduces acne & scars, exfoliates, and detoxifies & softens the skin. By soaking in baths and saunas the skin is softening and paws are opening which prepares the body for soaking in the volcanic clay.
Curved structures separate the bathes from the sauna baths which create not only privacy but also help to show the curves and shapes that have been taken as inspiration from the forms of the pahoehoe lava flow.
Two points where the curved pools & curved structures are spiraled from.
The bathhouse is not enclosed to 4 walls as I want the space to be as natural as possible. Lava fields & flows spread out as far as the lava can reach therefore I have not restricted the space and have kept it flowing with narrow curved walls to create pockets of privacy.
The Pahoehoe lava form reminded me of spirals with multiple row like forms spreading from a point. I have incorporated this in the bath house with three points that spiral out connecting baths, saunas and volcanic clay baths.

Final Model Imagery
Complications with my model making programme meant I had to create the model the best I could and then edit it to the correct look.

Story Board
I have created a series of 6 sketches that are linked to my floor plan with numbers. The sketches are showing the spot on the floor plan may look. This has helped me make some final layout plans and also how the space will work for a person using the bath house.
When drawing I did decide to draw a little differently to the actual layout just so I could explore some more ideas. This is why the layout does not completely match up with the story board.

Underground Heating
to create a sense that you are walking over a lava field of hot rocks I have decided that it would be appropriate to use underground heating to warm up the concrete floor and structures. by doing this it will more warm and comfortable for the users as they move between baths.
From researching and studying this website https://www.johnguest.com/speedfit/blog/underfloor-heating-best-practices/
I believe that I have created some more knowledge on how it works and how it would look in the bath house.
I would have one box where the gas cylinder and the hot water bottles are connected to. From there several pipes would cover the entire floor of my space. potentially due to the size of my space I would need two hot water bottles and gas cylinders but I am hoping only one will be required.
Below is a drawn image of how I think that my bath house will look if I was to underground heating over the whole space.

Bath House Meaning
The bathhouse I have created is inspired by the pahoehoe lava flow. This lava flow captured me because of its flowing lines that all interlocked and curved into each other. At the beginning of this brief, my bathhouse was inspired by Rangitoto island and the basalt lava flow that covered the land. This lava flow intrigued me due to its large rocks that I was planning on using throughout my bathhouse. However, this rock when walking on is hard on the feet and can be sharp which worried me that it was going to make my bathhouse uncomfortable. When I came across the pahoehoe lava flow I immediately knew that I needed to change my lava flow. By changing the lava flow I have been so inspired by the way the lines and grooves on the rock flow so smoothly and curve so nicely. Throughout the bathhouse, I have Tried to keep a continuous flow through all my lines and especially the baths. The baths inside of the bathhouse are all shaped as the spirals that the flow creates, the spiral shape that I have created inside of the bath intertwines around 2 baths each as well as a shallow sauna bath. Curves are also shown through the exterior wall I have created which is curved poles in a curved shape. I created these walls because I wanted the swirls to be able to push out and not be confined however, I also wanted to create slight privacy for the users of the space. When the pahoehoe lava fields are at their most stunning point they are too hot and dangerous to be near therefore when a person enters the space I want them to have an experience as if they are walking over the lava fields and relaxing in the beautiful shapes that volcano naturally makes.

Finalising floor plan
This post is showing a series of drawings that lead to then a final floor plan of the bath house. The last post I posted left off from me trying to create a design that was preserving the natural and athletic elements of a lava flow therefor I was leaning away from creating anything too artificial and not realistic. The first drawing is just a series of lines you can say however this technique has really helped me to keep a consistent flow and natural look.

From this drawing I wasted no time and got it straight onto the computer and created a sketch up model of it. The drawing below shows the wall structure that I have designed however it does not show the baths. In real life the lava flows push out as far as they can and they are not restricted to a certain perimeter therefore I want to show a flow and freedom throughout my bath house. This particular design would mean the people would have to enter the sauna space through the middle of the bath/ feature wall which seems to me that it is breaking the natural flow/ design of the wall and it is also restricting the power of movement. I also think that if they enter form this space of the bath there is going to be a lot of congestions and people traffic.
From this first design I then gatherd my thoughts and went back to the drawing board and created the image below which is an online model of some alts I created.
Changes-
- As u can see I have created more space between each of the poles which therefore creates less of an boundary and limitation which is what I have been wanting to avoid
- I have also created the inner wall to be the shape of the pools which therefore creates two swirls that both have two pools and the sauna/pool

The image below shows more of a brainstorm of the layout I have designed.

Preserving the natural shape of the lava flow throughout design
As I said in the previous post I felt as though my design was losing the beauty of the natural sorting form. I believe this is because I was trying to create an entrance way in the middle of the swirl like from therefore losing all of its beauty.
With butter paper I have begun to draw into the space but each drawing I have developed. I am happy with how these turned out because I was really focusing on preserving the form.
Throughout all of my designs I noticed that I change the entrance of the pool to be around the edged which meant was able to create bigger baths with an easier access and was also about to keep the formation of the lava flow.
This first design was me just playing around with shapes and lines however it has inspired me.

This next image is a development from this first. i tried to just make this a more practical and whole space design but keep the same base as the first one. In this design is when I introduced the idea of entering the pool from the outside of the bath which therefore creates the swirl effect in the middle. I do really like this design however I feel as-though I want the bath to be simple yet powerful and with the several lava flows/swirls it is beginning to lose the power that I am trying to portray

From the last design I developed to create this, with this design I did decide to move the wall because I decided I was wasting space, Therefore I created a square and in the square I made one large lava flow swirl which you enter from the edge of the bath. I do really like this as the simplicity will be beatiful however there are a few things I am questioning about it.
- are the entrances to big and are they taking away from the design inspiration
- by using the square shape is the space losing the organic form which I have been inspired from the flow of the lava field and no formal shapes.
I am now going to and look into those particular questions I am asking myself

Drawing into sketch-up model
Once I created the sketch-up model I decided to being to draw my layout design into the space to get a sense of how it will look and also to develop my ideas.
This first image is showing the first design that I tried in the space, I definitely enjoy the idea of this drawing however the curves need to be more curved as at the moment I am losing the idea and the inspiration behind the design.

Then developed my design to this images below. I am really happy with how this design turned out in development to the previous. I like how there is more curve to the lines.

Below is a mage of a drawing where I focused on working on the entrance of the baths. I have to preserve the natural shape of the lava flow throughout my design but also making a practical entrance for all people, able or not. When creating this I started to get the idea that the bathhouse was losing the idea of the idea of the swirl and the curved shape baths. I do want to not literally make the lava flow the baths I wanted to make it in a subtly not so literal form however I do still want the flow to stand out and be the one and only future of the bath house. therefore I need to keep changing and developing my design.

The image below is showing how the top of lava flow bathes will sit above the surface and the water will come right to the waters edge. I do not want to there to be space between edge of bath and water however I want the top ridges of the structure to be above the water.

Creating sketch-up model
I have decided to create a sketch up model of my bath house which I then can draw in and begin to get a better sense of the space. As you can see I have extended the space into the courtyard area which is because I believe space in the city is so valuable and I did not want it to go to waste. Throughout the journey of my design I may change this however I really like how the blank canvas looks so far.
Because I want my bathes to be large to demonstrate the lava fields I think that the inside outside flow is nice to give the space a sense of realness.

Developing floor plan designs
From continuous research i keep finding my self very intrigued to a few certain images of the lava flow which is pasted below. I am so fascinated by the natural yet so perfect shape, form and texture that is created throughout this flow. because the bathhouse does not have endless space I have decided that I am going to let myself and the space be inspired by this particular image. I have begun to work on a rough floor plan design that incorporates this form in I think I beautiful way. It did take me endless drawings and a full day to even get my head around how I would incorporate this form with water and make it usable but I think that I have made a good start.

This floor plan was an initial one I did, when doing this I realised I actually had a lot more space that would help me to put my design to the best potential and aswell as creating bigger bathes.

Initial layout design
I have created this initial design of a floor plan because I decided I need to start somewhere so that I can then start to develop and finalise a design. Overall the design I created is something I can imagine however I do not think it is intense and realistic enough compared to if you were walking through a real life volcano/pahoehoe lava flow. This design to me feels very flat however from research the real lava flows are multiple levels and also have tunnels.

Initial drawing into the space
I have decided to take another further step to designing the inside of my bath house which is beginning to draw the lava flow inside of the bath house so that I can start to invasion a design and layout of my space. I have just put my particular favourite type of the lava flow into the middle of the ‘space’ so it is obviously not a set in stone design however It is beginning to start to spark ideas.
From my drawing I am really interested in the way that rounded affect does seem to work in the space. I do understand this drawing of the space is not accurate however I think that it is a good start to understanding the space.
