Talent Show
One of my hidden talents is having the ability to write different types of poetry, really quickly. It is one of my secret hobbies and I actually write a lot of poems, but I never share them. So for the talent show, I wrote and acronym poem with the word “Teach”. It was quick and simple, and I enjoyed being able to share it with the class.

Movie Trailer
Tumblr media
One of the last assignment’s that we completed after ending Becoming Naomi Leon, was creating a book “movie” trailer that would inspire people to read the book. It was a great experience creating the trailer, and I enjoyed being able to be silly and creative, and collaborating with my team to create an intriguing video. I believe that the students would have a great time doing an activity like this, as long as the requirements are very clear.

Importance of Art in education
After taking the teaching about the arts class, I have came to the conclusion that art is very important to incorporate in all aspects of life, but especially in a student’s educational journey. When you allow students to be creative and artistic, it helps them develop as individuals. Doing hands on activities with art is also very relaxing and therapeutic. It allows students to express themselves, and help them authentically learn lessons !

Becoming Naomi Leon
Tumblr media
After reading Becoming Naomi Leon, we were given the option to do different summary projects. You could do a travel brochure, recreate the book cover, create a soap carving, and etc. I really thought that this was a great way to end the book because it would show what the students learned and payed close attention. It also allows them to be creative and artistic.

In my teaching the arts class, we did an art gallery, where we showcased four projects that displayed different types or methods of art. I chose to do fabric, wood, Pop Art, and abstract painting for my projects. These projects were so fun and invigorating to do. I felt like I was able to showcase hidden talents that I have and also participate in one of my hobbies that I am not always able to do.

This is student work from my field experience in which I taught them the Branches of Government. I had them do create posters with tree’s because our government is often compared to a tree with branches. I allowed them to be as creative as they desired, in way to sow uniqueness and individuality. They don’t have art, so with my lessons, i tried to incorporate art as much as possible.

We did a trading stimulation in class, where we brought in items that we could possibly use to trade the item with a classmate’s item. It was really fun and inspired authentic learning about what a trading economy entails. If someone didn’t like the item you had, then they weren’t required to give you the item you wanted. This shows you how hard it could’ve been to make sure you had all the things you needed when this type of economy existed. It definitely differs from having open access to any item we want or need, as long as we have money. I definitely could use this activity in class in more than one way.

My group and I were working on our Decades project in social studies. We were given a packet that outlined what we were required to include in our presentation detailing the decade. We had the 70′s, and decided to divide the categories per team member to ensure that we all participated in the project. I think that this was a very fun assignment and we really enjoyed doing it.

Bill of Rights Lesson Plan
For my last lesson plan at my field experience, I taught the students the Bill of Rights. I created a PowerPoint with visual representations in order to help the students retain and review the Bill of Rights. I then divided the class into groups, and had them each create a poster for one of the bill of rights. i required the to create an image/drawing that details the bill of rights, and the other requirement was to write the amendment in simpler terms. I believe that it was effective and the students met my expectations.

Today at field during social studies, the school where I do my field experience at gathered all the 4th and 5th grade students, whom had good behavior, in the gymnasium to attend a zoo animal meet. Two employees from the local zoo brought in some animals and gave background information on them, and allowed the students to ask questions and pet the animals. I think that this was a great experience for the children, and also a great incentive to keep the students on their best behavior daily.

Arming Teachers: Yay Or Nay
Today in class, a local news reporter visited our classroom and interviewed us on the topic of arming teachers and separated us based on our opinions. It was such a great experience to be able to share our opinions, being that we are graduating soon and this will majorly impact our generation of teachers. I also think it was relieving to be able to voice our concerns as well.

Playwriting and Scenery
Tumblr media
Today in art, my partner and I read a book, Lewis and Clark, and then rewrote a scene, in order to create a mini-play. We also brainstormed ideas on how we could develop the scenery to go along with the play. I think this is a very great way to use the integration of different subjects to allow the students to authentically learn.

Word of the Day
Everyday before class, we are instructed and expected write a word on the wall that basically sums up how we are feeling. We then would write the date and the word down in our journals. I really enjoyed doing this because for some reason, it was very therapeutic. I thought of many different ways that this could be incorporated in my class in a way that it could positively impact my students. I decided that I could have the students write the date, word, and definition of the selected word, that describes how they are feeling, and a brief explanation of why they feel that way. They also would be required to find 3 synonyms for the word.

Cultural Backpack
Today in class we did an activity where we talked about our past and chose a grade in which we were required to think of major things that occurred doing that school year. I chose the fourth grade because it was one of the best years of my life. I just remember it being such a happy and impacting time on the younger me. I went on a cruise with my family, where i was able to visit different islands such as Aruba, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and etc, and do a lot of interesting and fun activities on the ship. This was the first year I started my horseback riding lessons, after I began going to the Boys & Girls Club main site. I use to double dutch everyday at recess and at the Boys & Girls Club, and I remember being starstruck by the R&B group B2K and Pop star Jesse McCartney. This activity could be used in the classroom in several different ways. This could definitely be done at the beginning of the year when relationships are starting to evolve. It is also could be juxtaposed with a reading unit, in which you could have students compare their own experiences with the main characters. (I.e Becoming Naomi Leon, Bud, Not Buddy, etc)

“Scoot”-What is Social Studies?
Today in class we had a class discussion over a few questions that were pre-selected by Professor Syd. One of the questions was, “What is Social Studies” and this question really resonated in my mind and got me thinking. In my small group, we brainstormed and identified words and concepts that fall under social studies and we said that it was learning about states, cities, countries, geography, capitals, and people from the past and present. In short, basically about learning about the world around us. This activity really helped me realize how important social studies is to the curriculum, and also how important it is for me as a teacher to make sure I inspire students to develop a love for social studies. I really want to give my students an authentic learning experience, in order to help them develop a great attitude towards this subject.
