I agree that citizens of Jamaica are entitled to rights and privileges by virtue of birth, adoptions, marriages, and even nationalization. They also have a right to be protected from inhumane and harsh treatments, and a right to life. Those who are aware of their rights can fight for their rights and the rights of others. Thus, reporting those who breach them.
KNOWING YOUR RIGHTS pt.1

Rights can be defined as the entitlement given to an individual based on conditions of their existence. For example, human rights are given to a person by virtue of being a human being, and citizens rights are given to natives of a particular country by virtue of being a citizen of that said country. Through a series of blogs entitled “ KNOWING YOUR RIGHTS “certain rights will be discussed as well ramifications if these rights are infringed upon and basic comments will be made on the atmosphere of rights and responsibilities of citizens and elements of the state as well as the relations between such variables.
As a Jamaican citizen, there a several citizens rights that one is entitled to. Prasad stated that rights are nothing more or less than those social conditions which are necessary or favorable for the development of one’s personality. The constitution is the legal document that delineates the rights that are given to an individual, such rights can be found in Chapter 3 section 13 of said document and is entitled The Charter of Fundamental Rights and Freedoms. In this portion of the document, there are 21 factors listed ranging from religious and political freedom, access to education, the right to due process, freedom of movement, expression and equity in the law. Other areas in which the charter of rights cover are political rights i.e taking office and the eligibility to vote, the right to enter, exit and traverse the country at one’s convenience and the right to be protected from discrimination on the grounds of gender, race, class, color or creed. The rights registered are synonymous to those that are outlined in the Bill of Rights in the US constitution. The reality is that most citizens rights are usually human rights as well and are blanketed across many countries and regions.

Citizens’ Rights
Knowing Your Rights As A Jamaican Citizen
Toba Beta (2020) postulated that in a country of ideas and consciousness there is its citizens. Did you know that as a citizen, you are entitled to rights and privileges by virtue of birth, adoptions, marriages, and even nationalization? Human rights are a set of rights that every human is entitled to. Every human being is inherited with these rights no matter what caste, creed, gender, or the economic status they belong to. Human rights are very important in making sure that all humans get treated equally. Your rights as a citizen are essential for a good standard of living in the world. Your rights are based on the principle of respect, equality, and fairness for the individual.
Like Martin Luther King Jr, Rosa Parks, Marcus Garvey, Samuel Sharpe, and even Malcolm X; they stood up for what they believed in, by fighting against inequality that is the rich versus the poor, inhumane treatment, segregation amongst those in the caste system as well as the black and white. Even though these issues still prevail, knowledge is key so that we as Jamaican citizens can become knowledgeable. Malcolm X postulated that “Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today. The Charter of Fundamental Rights and Freedoms under the Jamaica Constitution has been afforded protection to the rights and freedom of persons to the extent where those rights and freedom do not prejudice the rights and freedom of others (2011). As a citizen of Jamaica, Chapter 3 of the Jamaica Constitution states that you have a right to freedom of movement, the right to life, and the right to freedom of expression. Also, you have the right to freedom from discrimination whether you are male or female no matter your race, place of origin, class, color, religion, and political opinions.
Right to Freedom of Movement
Have you ever wondered what it would be like if your rights to freedom of movement have been restricted? I know I would feel trapped or imprisoned. However, freedom of movement gives citizens the right to freedom to move and reside freely within Jamaica. Also, they can leave the country to explore God’s beautiful creation. Freedom of movement began as a way to encourage people to travel to their place of employment without facing discrimination, nor privacy being invaded. Today people travel freely to church. They even go to the beach, or party as they please.
The right to life
Ernest Hemingway stated that “In order to write about life you must live it. Life is the quality that distinguishes a vital and functional being from a dead body. God gave us the breath of life and so we must live it in a way that is pleasing to God. Therefore, no one including the government should be created should try to end your life. As a result, laws must be created and implemented to safeguard your life from harm and danger so that you are protected by the law. Additionally, in some cases, once these measures are implemented then they can protect you if your life is at risk.
Right to Freedom from Discrimination
You have the right to freedom from discrimination. Every man and woman, youth, and child no matter your race, place of origin, class, color, religion, and political opinions have the right from unjust or prejudicial treatment. Discrimination occurs when a person is unable to enjoy his or her human rights or other legal rights on an equal basis. For instance, when you are excluded or isolated by your coworkers because you are disabled, it is discrimination. Another example is a customer who visits the Gucci store to purchase a bag. The sales representative overlooked you and focused on someone else who is more worthy or desirable of their service based on appearance and so they do not even want to serve you.
Conclusion
In conclusion, human rights are the rights that you are entitled to as a citizen by birth, adoption, marriage, and even nationalization. You have the right to freedom of movement, the right to freedom of life, and even freedom from discrimination. The Jamaica Constitution, Chapter, titled the Charter of Fundamental Rights and Freedom that establishes your rights as a citizen. What are some other fundamental rights that you are entitled to as a citizen?
If any of your rights have been violated, you have the right to report it. Be in the know! Be aware! Know your rights today!
