there’s a reason why the entire story of avatar the last airbender begins and ends with katara. there’s a reason why we are introduced to katara first before we are introduced to any other character. there’s a reason why katara is the narrator. there’s a reason why the creators have emphasized over and over again that katara is just as titular to the story as aang - she’s the other main character.

when you water down katara - remove her compassion, her ability to connect with others, her nurturing role, her ANGER and RAGE and DRIVE - you water down the very fundamentals of the story. you drastically and severely alter the core dynamics of the gaang, because katara was so important to the development of every single one of them. she was the rock and glue that held team avatar together.

katara was unlike any other character to ever appear on television; she was a young brown girl who took no shit from anyone, yet at the same time remained kind and compassionate and nurturing. katara was a force of nature; proud of her heritage and culture, burdened by the responsibility of being the last southern water bender of the water tribe, angered over the death of her mother and everything that the fire nation took from her, determined to help every single person in need, determined to change the world, angry and resentful because old men and rules and laws kept telling her what she could or could not do, thus, she was determined to restructure thousands of years of patriarchy that stood against her from accomplishing her goals and dreams.

watering down katara into at most 2-3 tangible characteristics, stripping her away of all her motivation and agency and nuance, telling the audience that she wants to help and change the world only to have her stand in the background with an air of grief, demonstrates that the writers of the live action fundamentally misunderstand the spirit of avatar. and that’s something so unforgivable. no matter how many changes they decide to make, or how much they decide to stay true to the original story in other areas, no matter how many flashy VFX fight scenes we get - if you fail to properly understand katara, you fail to understand the heart and soul of avatar the last airbender, everything that makes avatar such a timeless classic.

So I was rewatching Western Air Temple because it’s one of my comfort episodes and I noticed something.

I know people talk about this part:

The way Zuko’s whole face lights up when he sees that Katara came to see him. He’s probably hoping that this is his chance to privately apologize to her for the Crystal Catacombs.

But watching his expression the rest of this encounter, I noticed something else.

Even though Katara is (rightfully) being pretty aggressive and accusatory towards him, Zuko never looks angry at her. He canonically hates to have his past brought up against him and gets angry in other instances, but here there’s no anger. He just looks shocked and hurt, because he knows he messed up and needs to fix things with Katara.

The final look he gives her as she leaves says it all.

No anger or resentment at all. He doesn’t blame her for her feelings. He doesn’t want to “get back at her” somehow. He’s just hurt and sulky because he cares about what she thinks and doesn’t want her to be angry with him. But he shows that desire for her trust is unselfish when he doesn’t blame her for her feelings and accepts responsibility instead.

Anyways, tired of the takes that they’d just fight all the time if they were in a relationship and that Zuko has all this pent up anger against her. He just doesn’t.

I have a sort of "playlist obession" and I couldn't stop thinking about the fanfiction Clothe me in seasons, dress my in snow by @sadladybug

So, I've made a playlist based on the story, that follows more or less the storyline and the chapters - or, at least, my impressions about it (and how it absolutely broke my heart. Seriously, I can't stop thinking about that fanfic).

It all started when I came through The Lumineers' song Cleopatra and the lyrics: "But I was late for this, late for that, late for the love of my life" and then I found myself with a whole playlist.

There are some people who say that the only way that you can make Zutara canon is to water down Katara and make her “meek” or whatever. I find this very funny. Now, I can only speak for myself, but one of the reasons I’m more drawn to Zutara is that Zuko lets Katara feel her anger and he never tries to brush it aside. She’s allowed to show her rougher side with him. She’s allowed to vent and speak on her darkest feelings. It’s one of the reasons I like The Southern Raiders so much. So, no, you don’t need to water Katara down to pair her with Zuko. If anything, you’re kind of missing a fundamental appeal for that ship if you do so.

“Thank you for the eight seasons of Voltron: Legendary Defender”

So in S8Ep7 - Day Forty-Seven, they had this scene of Kinkade saying goodbye to Seok Jin. And for some reason this scene made me really sad, and I wasn’t sure why. I didn’t actually know the context of this.

Turns out it was a dedication to one of Studio Mir’s storyboard artists who passed away last year. He animated so many amazing moments for this show, that were just phenomenal to watch. This was such a thoughtful tribute, and a really sweet moment to watch.

More often than not, you’re someone who likes to lighten up the mood by being funny. You’re the member that breaks the ice when meeting someone new, radiate positive energy, and give other people strength. You do things just so that other people can smile, even if it meant making yourself look silly. Thank you for all the times you made us smile and laugh. You’re the oldest member, yet you joke around just so that your younger members can feel comfortable around you. You apologize so you prevent arguments, you cook for your members, silently comfort them, and give them strength. And in order to do so, you keep silent about your own struggles. 

We know that you go through things that we can only ever imagine going through. You’re really strong. I really admire your positive outlook on life. You’ve sacrificed so much and worked so hard to get to where you are now. Some people may not see it, but you’re serious when you need to be. You’re hard on yourself because you want to present the best version of yourself to us, I understand. No matter how hard things got, you were always optimistic and worked even harder. I hope you can now see what an excellent vocalist and dancer you are, just like how ARMYs and the rest of BTS see you. We’ll always love and admire you, Kim Seokjin.
