Ride for World Health 2014 - Ride Day 7 - 68 miles and 8800 ft of vertical climbing from Mesa to Payson, Arizona. Today the ride hit my top 3 list of best bike rides of all time. Arizona national parks surrounded us and the views were all stunning. It was a bluebird sunny days with great rising temperatures hovering around 50 degrees Fahrenheit We took breaks from the wicked but picturesque climbs to soaking the views. The descents were also amazing with most of our riders hitting their personal top speeds on a bike all time. I broke my land speed record at 49.8 mph while officially our fastest rider Nick was going as fast as cars at 52.2. Some of the riders also experienced the quick change in weather changes in the Arizona mountains. At 5000 feet of elavation in our destination a storm rolles in as they made it to town and snowed on them! We were all very thankful to arrive at Grace Lutheran Church where the congregation welcomed us with a potluck dinner featuring a lentils and sausage soup.
Swim (in agricultural runoff). Bike 77 miles from Yuma to Dateland. Run 4 miles in the 93 degree heat. Raise awareness for global health. Just another day with Ride for World Health for this traveling triathlete
Today we had a great turnout at Masters swim practice. There was a big focus on IM swimming and kick drills. Kicking, non-freestyle swimming, & formalized drills are all very new to me. Phew! Combine that with the altitude and that’s a great swim workout! The sun was out for another bluebird day here in Steamboat. When Heather and I checked the bank next door for the temp and it said 40°, we got a excited for a bike ride!
Today was a lot of firsts for me. First time road biking in 2014. First time road cycling in Steamboat, in the mountains, colder than 50°, and with snow all around me. It was an exhilarating 40 mile ride to Oak Creek and back. Heather was happy to be my tour guide for my maiden voyage in from 'The Boat.' We checked out just some of the great rides the IronEdge triathlon team could take this summer.
What amazed me most was the snowy scenery of the mountains. The brisk air which was hard to breathe on the uphills and frooze my little toesies. The breathetaking views made me forget about my frozen toes. It is refreshing to know that this is my knew stomping grounds. I'm even more excited to be around like minded people who love the active lifestyle the majesty of the mountains provide.
Heather, a 5X IRONMAN champion, myself, an amateur triathlete, or the millions of other people who live active healthy lifestyles in their own ways; we all are finding joy in activity, wellness, and the hope for fulfilling lives.
1 mile warm-up run. Masters swim team with an Olympian and a 5x ironman champ. Followed by 5 mile tempo run. Accompanied by an amazing kale and avocado sala, peanut butter and jelly, and yummy.
Cooking a base meal is great for leftover creations. I took my kale and sausage Dutch dish and made myself a wonderful breakfast. Just added some toast, fried egg, and of course my favorite breakfast hot sauce, Cholula! Happy Sunday morning!
Creativity comes at strange times. Currently under the weather, I woke up at 4am to a cold sweat and an orange glow coming from the city lights burning through the clouds outside my windows. This was my first attempt at capturing negative space.
When an idea comes, embrace it, act upon it, and let it grow naturally. Capture originality in the moment or it may forever be lost in time.
Connecting to my Dutch roots, I made this amazingly simple Kale, Sausage, and Potatoes dish.
Thanks to my Dutch friend Lennart for suggesting his favorite winter time comfort food. Also a shout out to Berthe for informing me it is traditionally made with Rookworst (smoked sausage). I substituted turkey sausage to keep it a bit healthy. I also take every chance I can get to grill in the winter time! Delicious, warming, healthy, and comforting.
