Creative Writing Reflection Post - My Journey

When I wrote my first manuscript, I was so excited. I wrote query letters for at least thirty literary agents. I brought my letters to the post office and dumped them on the counter. The mailman looked close at the recipients on envelopes and then at me. He asked me, "are you a writer?" It was the first time I was ever asked that question. I proudly replied, "yes, I am." That day I declared to myself and that postal worker that I was a writer. Today, I announce it to the world. I'm a writer.

Multimedia Adaptation

In this class, we were called upon the challenge of adapting a short story, first published in 1905, called, “The Gift of the Magi.” Luckily, I wasn’t a stranger to this story. While I read this story every Christmas, I had never given much thought to adapting it. In my adaptation, called The Distance Between, was influenced by the relationship with my own sister.
The first few days of this class, I was in New York visiting my little sister and realized how distant we had become. I used that feeling to create my own story of a brother and sister who live across the country from one another. For the things the main characters found precious, I had a high-level Job for the brother and the family house for the sister. These are the things that keep them apart, but both characters give them up to be with each other. In the end, the gesture is bittersweet since both end up on opposite ends of the country when they whisk off to see each other.
I like to come up with original ideas, but at the same time, about half of the time, my ideas are adaptations of another story. Whether it’s a re-telling of a classic fairy tale or something closer to fan-fiction, I definitely have an interest in retelling a story. In fact, some say there is no such thing as a new story, every story now is just a retelling of another. I plan to take what I learned in this class and use in future projects. There was an assigned reading assignment, “Adapting Novels, Memoirs and Short Stories: What to Keep and What to Cut,” by Susan Kouguell, that help this month and will use again.

A look into Media Convergence and Gamification
Example one:
What better use of technology than using it to combine two things that seem polar opposites. I’m referring to gaming and physical fitness. In my own life, my health care provider uses a company called Rally Health to increase health through Gamification. Consumers receive a person portal which keeps track of health screenings and includes health challenges that issue coins and achievements as a reward. The company encourages a healthy lifestyle by using games and reward system. You can also see this done by Nike plus app where wearable technology is used to track a person running path and distance which then can be shared on social media.

Nike Plus App
Example Two:
Who could have imagined growing up that the video games we used to pass the day away would become a competitive sport? This relatively new sport isn’t just limited to its athletes, but millions of people who watch the events on TV or streaming. No different to the NFL or NBA, except maybe in scale, Esports bring in devoted fans, and with that, millions of dollars in sponsors. These Esports have even made their way to campuses across the country. In fact, our school, Full Sail University, has joined the ranks of other colleges and created its own collegiate Esport league called “Armada” Believe it or not, colleges are taking these Esports serious enough that they are offering scholarships to competitive gamers to join their schools just like other college athletes.

Esport Scholarships
Example three:
What about making old media relevant again with new media. A good example of this is As Told by Emoji video shorts. Old and new Disney movies are retold by phone emojis characters. Disney classics like Lion King, Aladdin, and The Little Mermaid are modernized with today’s technology. The short animations incorporate a clever way to tell a narrative by using features and apps that can be found on most smartphones. A good example of media convergence.

Writing an episodic web series
I was overjoyed to make an episodic show from scratch. It was something I've always wanted to try and I thought a web series seemed to be the perfect jumping off point. “This will be a great learning experience,” I told myself, “I’ve never done anything like this before.” Then I remembered, I had made a web series.
That’s right, I forgot I already made a web series. After my film program, my writing partner and I threw around this idea of an animated web series, called Strongzor. We just wanted to make it for fun and didn’t worry how it would turn out. We made everything up as we went. We didn’t even use proper script formatting when writing it. Even though it wasn’t watched by many, we were still proud of making something we enjoyed.
Luckily, with this new web series, I already had a chance to test the waters before diving in. At first, I had no idea what I was going to write. The only thing I knew was that I wanted to continue with comedy. I thought of the resources I had at my disposal if I really wanted to film this. I’m not sure from where, but suddenly an idea came to me. In the end, I came up with the story of four friends trapped in an escape room.
One I had the idea everything else seems to fall into place. From our lessons, I learned how to properly build an episodic series. From logline, series overview, and character creation. I found the beat sheet especially helpful. I also found it helpful that we limited ourselves to just three acts with only a few pages per act. I find when you’re restricted with page count, it forces you to be more creative and clear-cut with your writing.
When all said and done, not only did I enjoy writing a web series but my finished product as well. I’m encouraged to write out the remainder of the season and work on getting this produced. I can put my film background to good use.
Regardless of where this series goes, I feel like I’m ready to put together the one-hour drama series I’ve been working on.
