𝐓𝐑��𝐍𝐈𝐓𝐘 couldn’t help but to roll her eyes at the female’s mention of her go-to meal to cook and quite frankly, the only one she was confident in cooking. “oh please. you and i both know these niggas can’t taste the difference. the trick is to have them so worn out that you could feed them stale ass bread and butter and they still gon’ devour it.” she nodded her head as if she as in agreement with herself as she placed the salmon in the pan. “ a lil’ ragu don’t hu--” her sentence being cut short the moment her and her friend jumped back in slight fear.  “that means it’s cooking, right?” she questioned as if she expected an answer back before shaking her head and cautiously placing the lid over the top of the pan as if it was going to burn her. “paula patton or whatever that racist white lady’s name was said to leave it and let it cook... or was that martha stewart?”

quickly, 𝐊𝐀𝐋𝐈 was reminded that cooking was not one of her friends strong suits, and she wasn’t the best cook in the world either. the fact that their expensive taste had them attempting such an elaborate dish was comical. “you make chicken alfredo with store bought sauce, and i start kitchen fires. so at this point, it’ll be a miracle if no one dies.” she shrugged as she grabbed a pot and poured in the ingredients — purposefully being heavy handed on the wine, so that he wouldn’t burn out once it came to a boil. “you think that’s enough?” she asked, now holding a half empty bottle of sauvignon blanc. the loud popping sound of the fish hitting the pan caused both of them to wince. “trin, i’m no bobby flay, but is the pan supposed to sound like world war ii?” she questioned, as she used a whisk to add mozzarella to the sauce.

truth be told, 𝐓𝐑𝐈𝐍𝐈𝐓𝐘 was a lightweight drinker and knew how she would react to consuming more of the straight liquor that was currently flowing in her bloodstream. that didn’t take her from taking one last swig from the bottle for good measure, though. following her friend’s instructions, she began to season the brightly-fleshed fish fish with a few familiar seasons that she found in the cabinet nearby. “you know what’s real cute? your faith in me not giving this entire house food poisoning.” she laughed, despite the fact that she was actually serious about her lack of skills in the kitchen. “you gotta take one for the team and try it before anybody else does. if you get sick, i’ma tell them you were throwing back shots while i was doing all the work.”

she couldn’t help but to chuckle as her friend picked the harder liquor, she nodded in agreement. taking the bottle from 𝐓𝐑𝐈𝐍, she also took a shot from it, the expression on her face a direct response to the harsh taste. “white wine sauce it is.” she declares. walking over to the fridge, she searched through it and found salmon and spinach; knowing that they could make a quick meal with them both. taking lemon juice, heavy cream, garlic and butter; she brought it back over to their makeshift station. “maybe i’ll burn it down on purpose, you ever seen salmon flambé?” she asked, her tone deadpan as if she was actually considering burning the house down. “you sautée the salmon, i’ll make the sauce? if the food isn’t good, the least i can do is get them drunk.”

𝐓𝐑𝐈𝐍𝐈𝐓𝐘’s eyes lit up the moment she spotted her friend. whether the gleam in her dark orbs was mischief or plain ol’ innocent excitement was soon to be determined. “their first mistake was leaving the liquor cabinet unlocked.” trinity grinned as she swiped the bottle of vodka from the woman’s hand without a second of hesitation. throwing her head back, she tilted the bottles a few inches from her mouth and allowed a shot’s worth of the liquid to flow down her throat. she motioned for 𝐊𝐀𝐋𝐈 to do the same once she finally swallowed. “how many shots you wanna bet on that we ain’t gonna have to call the fire department down here by the end of the night?”

“you know they fucked up right?.” 𝐊𝐀𝐋𝐈  said to her close friend as she sauntered into the kitchen with the first genuine smile she had sported since being in the house. the two being paired was most likely a coincidence, but she wouldn’t have had it any other way. grabbing two bottles; one containing white wine and the other vodka, she placed them both in front of the girl. “one we’ll use in the dish, the other we’ll drink. choose wisely.”

If 𝐓𝐑𝐈𝐍𝐈𝐓𝐘 wasn’t conscious of the weight that her family’s name held in the streets of Detroit, the scene in front of her would’ve played out a whole lot more differently. She could thank her mother for breaking her habit of impulsivity. However, the manner in which her patience was currently being tested would prove just how much she had learned from ol’ mommy dearest.

“Miss, I’ve been trying to be polite -- but frankly, you’re wasting everyone’s time here. I’ve run your card four times through our system and it declined every time. I️ recommend you call your bank to clear any issues up.” The middle-aged white woman kept the same forced smile on her face since the start of their interaction. “I️ would suggest shopping somewhere you can actually afford, sweetheart.”

Looking up from the banking app on her phone that she had been unsurprisingly locked out of, it only took but a moment for the young woman’s calm and collected demeanor to switch almost automatically. She no longer had reign of the link between her brain and her mouth, words spilling from her oral cavity faster than she could catch them.

“I’d watch that fucking tone of yours if I️ were you, sweetheart.” Despite the profane and harsh language that fell past her lips, the beauty’s features mask into nothing short of an innocent smile. “This is how this gonna go, okay? I️ would advise you keep up. You’re going to give me my back my card and I’m going to have a very in-depth conversation about my experience here with those men holding up those cameras outside. You see them? They’re waiting for me.” Waving to the small group of men outside, she laughed softly as the clicking sounds of their cameras became less discreet. “While I’m doing that, you should start packing your shit up and start looking for a new job. Because once I️ get off the phone with my grandfather who is connected to any and everyone who is powerful in this city, the store will be on shut down before you make it to work tomorrow. Do you understand?”

The look of utter shock on the older woman’s face was satisfying enough for 𝐓𝐑𝐈𝐍𝐈𝐓𝐘. She gave the associate a knowing wink before snatching her debit card from her hands and chucking the armful of clothes she was set on buying towards her face. “You have a great rest of your day, though... Tiffany.”

The faux polite smile that graced her features faltered the minute she walked outside. The flash of cameras distorting her vision momentarily as she made her way to her Tesla Model X. Her phone already in the process of ringing before she even made it to her car. Her father’s baritone voice sounded on the other end of the call. 

“Daddy, if we’re going broke -- you know you can tell me, right?”
