Green scheme - Gatwick plans to built an electric forecourt
Gatwick Airport has teamed up with sustainable energy firm GRIDSERVE to build a Gatwick Electric Forecourt as an electric-charging alternative to a petrol station.
This is a first for any airport in the UK, available to the millions of commuters, passengers, staff, businesses and local residents that pass through the airport and motorway network annually.
The forecourt itself will have sufficient space to charge 36 electric vehicles at the same time, with high-power chargers delivering up to 350kW of charging power and able to add 100 miles of range in under ten minutes. And multiple charging connectors will be provided, catering for all types of electric cars.
It is expected to be open from autumn next year, with other provisions including a cafe, free superfast WiFi, a children’s play area, supermarket and an education space to drive awareness of electric vehicles. GRIDSERVE’s own solar farms will also be supplying the site with low cost 100 per cent renewable net zero carbon energy!
Jonathan Pollard, Gatwick Airport’s chief commercial officer, said: “We are on a journey to create a low carbon economy and Gatwick is keen to play an important role by providing new infrastructure that everyone can use, including a transformed and well-connected railway station, so that together we can start reducing our dependence on fossil fuels.”
Back in October, the airport also announced that sustainable aviation fuel had been introduced for the first time, with the blend on all the easyJet flights going to the recent COP26 climate change conference in Glasgow.
The fuel source itself is fully certified and produced from 100 per cent renewable and sustainable waste and residue raw materials such as animal fat waste and used cooking oil.

Top 25 Holiday Destinations For 2022 Revealed!
All being well, global travel will resume in all its glory from next year onwards – so now’s the time to sit down and think about where you’d like to go and what wonders of the world you’d like to see when the pandemic settles down even more.
If you’re looking for a bit of inspiration in this regard, National Geographic has just published its top 25 travel destinations, celebrating the unique, the different and the influential – so there’s sure to be something in there for everyone, a trip to suit all holiday tastes and preferences.
Those of you keen to embrace nature, for example, might be taken with the idea of visiting the Caprivi Strip in Namibia, perhaps, a narrow stretch of verdant land that’s incredibly rich in wildlife, home to a vast array of different species.
Or what about volunteering to help save Lake Baikal in Russia, which is currently facing threats of pollution, tourism developments and weak government protections. Travelers can team up with the Great Baikal Trail Association to help protect the lake and its surrounding areas.
If it’s adventure you’re looking for, meanwhile, National Geographic recommends the 15-stage La Seine a Velo, a new cycling trail that goes from Paris to the sea. Alternatively, the Camino de Costa Rica hiking route could be the trip of your dreams, passing through protected natural areas and remote villages and towns.
And as for the culture vultures among you, the magazine suggests you check out Jingmai Mountain in Yunnan in China, where you can apparently get the perfect cup of tea!
This is one of the oldest cultural landscapes in China and the starting point of the Ancient Tea Horse Road, a network of caravan paths wending through the mountains of south-west China that served as a commercial passage for transporting tea, salt and other produce.
