one thing avatar 2 does actually portray pretty well is that capitalist militaries are not actually very good at warfare and warfighting, in the strictest sense.
they excel in slaughter, a process the bourgeoisie have perfected into industrial science. their marauding 'peacekeepers' act as slaughterhouse hands in the operation of their very well-oiled machine, never themselves in much more danger from a called-in airstrike than from meat-processing machinery. in a rare tragedy they might lose an arm or leg, and certainly might have some psychological issues if they quit, but their job is to kill, not to fight.
this is something revolutionaries have taken great notice of regarding the process of actually defeating these apparently all-powerful militaries: it's actually really easy to escape a slaughterhouse if you shoot the people operating it

Forget about torturing your blorbos, putting them through the wringer. I'm putting my blorbo in perfectly ordinary, pleasant situations. Their tortured personality will cause them anguish anyway, making an absolutely mundane scene into the most dramatic, agony filled affair as though the world is ending and it's all their fault

thinking more about the avatar and disability stuff and i know some shit is going to happen with spider and his rebreather in 3 based on script leaks (i mean i guess netayam hatches from a cocoon onscreen in some 2 script leaks and that shit did not happen so who knows) and liiiiike. i just feel like it doesn't look good for every bodily challenge a central cast member deals with in this series to be miracled away.
i hesitate to call spider's dependence on a rebreather a disability because like, it definitionally isn't for humans it's standard to breathe oxygen lol. but at the same time it's a reliance on medical equipment that differentiates him in his community. i don't think it defines him at all and i see why they would want jack champion to Not be masked up in every other scene but..i don't love the optics of every biological challenge these characters face being solved through eywa counterhealing with a..Hyperability. is that a thing?
#a3 script leak discussion#in case anyone blacklists?#like the first time? well it was 2009. so i'll let you get away with the one disabled character getting miracled#the second time. well you only confirmed extratextually that she isn't epileptic so.. i guess.. it's fine..#the third time a pattern and a theme is established#and i worry that like kiri is about to start making blind people see#kiri 'mr beast' te suli kireysi'ite#like yes shes a christ figure yes jesus does miracles but lets be subtle here and tread lightly james

the more i think about earth and humanity in the avatar setting the more questions i have. like what do people think of the RDA? it's nongovernmental i guess but it seems to operate LIKE a governmental org. activist survival guide (i know its non-canon) says this

and i believe at least the second part holds up, or i see no reason why it shouldnt. so its a QGAE that was possibly originally made up of silicon valley startup chuds. can we start calling DOGE this?
anywauy i feel like people on earth generally would not love the RDA the same way nobody likes doge besides some extremely specific types of freaks. it has to be to some extent taxpayer funded--doge is, anyway. to me its not really a question of whether RDA is perceived positively or negatively on earth because im almost certain everyone whos not a total techbro bootlicker would feel ambivalent at best about a fundsucking entity like this. i would say the mood must be complacently resentful. as many are with doge at the moment.
and sure unlike doge it brings in money (or much like doge, depending on how you look at it--all those NPS employees and grants and scholarships that arent being paid anymore to make Number Go Back Up, lol, not really sustainable as eventually you'll just run out of things to slash but hey thats the name of the game isnt it? clear cutting until theres nothing left) but how much of that is cannibalized by the organization to develop cool new types of science bulldozers lightyears away from the planet funding it? i feel like at least people would be grumbling about this
so more than that my question is in what way does this resentment manifest? is it productive or reactionary, basically. is it "my tax dollars are going to the RDA to fund space imperialism! i hate space imperialism!" or are there people who are all like "they are taking your hard earned earth money so that the xenos can learn DEI pronouns in jungle school"
presumably a mix of the two but i'd like to know what the presiding mood is. probably depends what future blue app you're using
#im sorry this is happening in your name dearest kabosu#starfield radio gave me a taste of spacefuture alex jones and i'll never be able to wash that away#unfortunately i believe that type of person will exist always no matter what#SORRY FOR GETTING MY OVERTHINKING IN YOUR ESCAPISM IT WILL HAPPEN AGAIN#the time difference also hampers this but presumably they're not TOTALLY in the dark

i SAY that about trying to like avatar's human* characters--i don't like jake, i probably should, i just find him a little boring. he could be so chewy. but he's not. he's like pudding.
*and transhuman characters? broadly sky people characters?
#i find it really baffling how disability never factors into the story of avatar At all#and they ALMOST went somewhere with kiri but she's Actually NOT epileptic guys don't worry#and i've seen it postured as like counter to the ecological and spiritual messaging to read her as epileptic which is crazy to me!#she can be both epileptic and spiritual like these can coexist in the story i think and yet#it's crazy that you have this character who uses a mobility device and like. if you go in starting at the second movie you'd have no clue#like you'd just think it influences him in any lasting way at all but no#which is why characters like anufi are really important as a counterweight i think#but in the movie they did the opposite they suggested a character Could be disabled and then nullify it extra-textually?#which is where i think we move a little too close to ecofascist territory#the idea that disabled people not only cannot but do not exist on pandora#like.. 鈥媡hrough eywa's intervention#the vibes are off
