Who is this glistening jewel in the moonlight? Why, it’s a New Mexico spadefoot toad [Spea multiplicata], a chubby little frog that rarely exceeds two and a half inches in length. These toads have a loud and snore-like call, and spend most of their day burrowed in the sandy earth of their preferred habitat. Image by Cole Wolf.

The northern spiny-tailed gecko is a lizard endemic to Australia. These geckos are nocturnal and their diet is relatively unknown, but they have been observed eating arthropods. Spiny-tailed geckos also have the ability to squirt a harmless, smelly, fluid from their tails. This is used as a deterrent for birds and other predators. This species can vary from a uniform grey color, with few black or orange scales, to rich brown, with a mottled pattern of grey, white, and orange scales. (x x x x x x x)

gynandromorphism in spiders
a gynandromorph is an organism that exhibits male and female characteristics. bilateral asymmetry can occur wherein one “side” of the animal is female and the other is male, mosaicism can occur wherein the characteristics are distributed in patches. in spiders, this phenomenon can present itself through presence of both testes and overies and split colouration. cases can also occur where, although parts of the spider are clearly male or female, the divisions can be less definite; certain reproductive organs like the palps and epigyne may be very poorly developed or completely absent. these individuals are referred to as intersexes. gynandry and intersexuality can occur in the same individual.
