Why does comics being a different medium mean it's okay for them to casually break canon rules of the source material? When Pikachu defeated Brock's Onyx in the first season of the anime despite the canon fact that Ground types are immune to Electric attacks, the anime fully acknowledged that this is not something that would normally be possible and gave explanation for why Pikachu was able to do that. Even if it was a somewhat bullshit explanation.

Meanwhile, Flynn just causally has Megaman oneshot Bubbleman with the weapon he's immune to as if it's nothing. Explain to me what it is about video games vs Comics that makes this necessary?

Wow hey would you look at that, turns out Bubble Man is STRAIGHT UP IMMUNE TO THE WOOD SHIELD. As in it plonks right off him and he takes no damage from it. Interesting. It's almost like if there was a comic book adaptation of Megaman that depicted Bubbleman being defeated BY the wood shield, it would be an atrocious god awful piece of absolute dog shit written by someone who never so much as touched a single megaman game in his entire life and is an active spit in the face to the franchise.

Seriously in this fucking piece of shit comic, Metal Man is the SECOND TO LAST ROBOT MASTER THAT MEGAMAN FIGHTS in that story. Even though EVERYBODY WHO HAS PLAYED MEGAMAN 2 know that Metal Man's weapon Metal Blade is the best weapon in the entire fucking game and the only reason you wouldn't fight Metal Man first is because you were deliberately trying to make the game more difficult with a challenge run.

And then as if to add insult to injury, Megaman just uses his buster to just circumvent the Alien fight at the end, even though IN THE GAME the Alien is literally only weak to Bubble Man's weapon which is like, a hilarious joke because Bubble Lead is the shittiest weapon in the game.

I fucking HATE this comic, man. It's seriously worse than the Ruby Spears cartoon in terms of being a spitefully antagonistic In Name Only adaptation that treats the source material as toilet paper to wipe its ass with. Hell, at least the Ruby Spears cartoon is entertaining due to absurdity and camp. The archie Megaman comic is fucking NAUSEATING.

I mean, this was during Penders' run, but since Flynn was a fan I wouldn't be too surprised. Penders in general didn't always seem to register that the presumed target audience for the comic was kids, so this is not the first or the last time he made an outdated pop culture reference either.

Fans of the Sonic IDW comics would MURDER ME for what I've said about the comic, if they thought they could legally get away with doing so. You think I'm exaggerating? You haven't seen what I've seen. I am being dead serious. And honestly for some of them, it isn't the fear of consequences that's stopping them. It's simply the lack of means.

The ONLY REASON they like Ian Flynn is because he represents an ideal for them. He is an icon. The "big name fan" who infiltrated the franchise and now he has the keys to the asylum. They GENUINELY AND SINCERELY BELIEVE that Flynn can dictate the canon of the Sonic series, and is slaying the evil dragon of SEGA so that he can turn the franchise into Archie/IDW Sonic The Video Game. Because that's what THEY want to do. They are living vicariously through him.

They sincerely and legitimately resent the video games from the bottom of their heart, they hate everything from them and about them. They have nothing good to say about a single thing that originates from the video games, unless it's something that they claim was "fixed" by the comics and what they enjoy is the comics "version" of it. They derive no joy from the video games. To them, the video games are an albatross. A ball and chain. And yet at the same time, they want to coopt it and turn the video games into what they think the franchise should be i.e. the comics.

It's like they're so insecure and resentful of the fact that their stupid comics owe their existence to the video games that the only way they can cope is by constructing these delusional fantasies of destroying the video games and rebuilding them into interactive representations of the comic books. I don't even know what mental illness you fucking call that. I don't know what else to call that besides pure religious fanaticism.

It's going to be so fucking funny when IDW Publishing finally goes out of business and the comic fucking dies because of that, and everything from them is immediately forgotten about and never even acknowledged again. There'll be some cope for a little bit after it happens, some frothing at the mouth that a new comic publisher can just pick up the license and take over where IDW left off or that SEGA can just self publish the comic themselves, or that it just means the games are going to start adapting the storylines and cast of the comics. They'll deny reality for quite a long time. And it will be insufferable. But it will also be hilarious.

I've watched Windii's Sonic Heroes re-translation and it seems that there wasn't that much of a difference between the English and Japanese scripts there.

Crash Of The Titans Archie’s ‘Sonic The Hedgehog’ Super Sonic Vs. Hyper Knuckles Special

I mean at least Sega would never let them go as far as Hasbro let IDW take it. Prior to the reboot IDW TF got as far as Optimus Annexing Earth "For Their Own Protection."

Not just Optimus, but the Autobots as a whole were basically constantly getting shit from straw pacifist types who would blame them for basically every bad thing that happened during the Autobot/Decepticon war while being more willing to give the Decepticons a pass.

Another thing with James Roberts and the other Phase 2 IDW TF writers had in common with Flynn and friends is that they clearly had a deep seated hatred for anything that came from Takara/the Japanese side of the Franchise. This was mostly exemplified by turning Metalhawk from Masterforce into the leader of one of the aforementioned Straw Pacifist groups, who, after the war ended, was constantly stirring up trouble for Bumblebee and the other Autobots while they were trying to rebuilding Cybertron while buddying up with Starscream of all bots, which predictably ended in him literally getting stabbed in the back and killed.

Meanwhile, Starsaber from Victory was turned into an evil religious fanatic who gets killed off unceremoniously by Cyclonus near the end of the comic's run. Starsaber needs to have special attention called to him because him being made a villain was more or less outright admitted to be based on a fanfic James Roberts wrote as a teenager, so that's another thing he has in common with Ian Flynn.

And Roberts also made sure to essentially kill the Minicons off twice. Once it was this made up robot race that was clearly a parody of the Minicons who got used as a joke in the early days of Season 1 of More Than Meets the Eye who then got genocided during Dark Cybertron. Then an OC alien Anti-Transformer Faction called the Black Block Consortium found the Minicon colony world and genocided them off screen, leaving a single survivor who joins the Decepticon Justice Division.

Autobot Megatron, meanwhile, admittedly was partially Hasbro's own fault, since they encouraged the whole Fallen Revolutionary backstory and wanted to experiment with giving him a redemption arc in the comics, but it was pretty bungled. Megatron never really got properly redeemed, but we were supposed to think he was anyway. It was weird and kind of awkward. Not to mention, there was this problem where anyone skeptical of Megatron's ability to turn good either eventually came around to liking him for reasons (Rodimus and Ultra Magnus), or became villains (Getaway).

The real thing we should all be glad for though is thanks to the mandate against romance, we'll never have to deal with how close to the end of IDW TF's run pre-reboot, things kind of devolved into mostly fanficc-y ship pandering. I compared Tangle and Whisper to Chromedome and Rewind for a reason. Admittedly this is mostly because of them being the first gay couple to show up in the comic, but also because of how the fandom treats them. Even though CDRW are ultimately a better written couple, and better written characters in general, the fandom would hold them up as the only complete non-toxic ship in IDW even though they actually were kinda toxic in their own less obvious way. Among other things, Chromedome literally almost erased his own memories of Rewind when he died at one point (he got better, it's complicated). Also they ultimately devolved into thee lovey dovey couple that don't actually contribute anything to the story other than remind people that they're there and in love. And speaking of that, let's not even get started on all the other couples in that comic, this post is long enough.

Sorry, I felt like I had to get that off my chest lmao. Let's just say that things could be way worse than they are over with the Sonic comic.

It's really funny to me as someone who's both a Sonic and a Transformers fan how much IDW Sonic is beginning to remind me of Phase 2 onward of the IDW Transformers comic. The way Sonic is being treated is eerily similar to how Optimus was treated (down to making him a holier than thou hypocrite who was constantly blamed for everything) and I suspect that if Sega let them Whisper and Tangle would basically be Chromedome and Rewind 2.0 and Eggman would probably get the Autobot Megatron treatment.

Especially given how set he apparently was on Mobious 25 Years Later being the definitive future for the characters in the comic, and him pushing Knux and Julie as Soulmates(TM), it doesn't make any sense for him to keep teasing it.

One thing I have literally never seen anyone ever talk about when it comes to all the weird love triangles and furry soap opera BS Penders and Bollers threw into the comic during their run is how Penders repeatedly teased a potential love triangle between Sonic, Sally and Knuckles.

This all started back in the Super Sonic vs Hyper Knuckles Special when Sally met Knuckles on page for the first time and immediately revealed that she, somehow, spent her summer vacations on the Floating Island with Knuckles, so she and Knuckles already know each other.

And from there we had shit like, that hug Sally gives Knuckles after he saves Sonic at the end of the Mecha Madness arc, Sonic's reintroduction to the multiverse and first encounter with Zonic involving him meeting Sally as Sailor Moon with Knuckles as her Tuxedo Mask, and the most blatant and in your face moment was during the arc where Knuckles was green where we get a glimpse of an alternate timeline where Sally marries Knuckles instead of Sonic. And that's just what I can remember off the top of my head. It really was this entire Thing(TM) and I can only assume it didn't become a full blown proper love triangle because Penders gave Knuckles his own love interest in the form of Julie-su.
