Periodic reminder that the South lost the Civil War partly because the rich plantation-owning interests had no desire to spend their money to feed and clothe and arm the poor Southerners fighting and dying for the right of rich white Southerners to own people, partly because they lacked the resources for a long-term fight (once the North actually committed to the fight, which did take a while) because again, rich people hoarded what they had and a slavery-based economy does not innovate or attract new growth and investors, and partly because... Robert E Lee was not the greatest general in the world despite how the myths like to tell it. He was just better than the first few Union generals.

Additional periodic reminder that some people in the South and the border states did in fact dislike slavery and/or wanted to stay in the Union and it was not a universal opinion that the war was good (until after they lost when the myth of an idealized Southern past developed).

Another periodic reminder that the enslaved and formerly enslaved in the South participated both in battles and spying for the Union, but also in tending to the dead and injured on both sides, and that should not be erased from the narrative.

Yet another periodic reminder that many women dressed as men and yes some of them might possibly have id'd themselves as trans if they lived now, and fought in the war. They also served as battlefield nurses, which was not an easy job, and those who didn't still often had the responsibility of running businesses and farms for the duration of the war. They should not be erased from the narrative either.

And oh here's another periodic reminder that Arlington cemetery exists where it does because it was on land that belonged to Robert E. Lee's wife's family, and the US government wanted a permanent reminder of the cost of that traitor's actions.

And yet another reminder that Juneteenth exists because once the war was over, many white plantation owners didn't tell the enslaved people on their property that they were now free. That absolutely should not be erased even if it makes some white people uncomfortable.

And finally, finally, the Republicans under Lincoln are not the same party as the Republicans today. Just as the Democrats of the time were not the Democrats of today. Conservatives LOVE to claim they freed the slaves though. It's a lie and most of them know it's a lie.

History is nuanced and often ugly. Denying it only leads to it repeating. Only weak people would deny it.

P.S. Southern generals are absolutely traitors and should not have US bases named after them.

try lower. When I was 8, my pediatric doctor told my mom "it's not uncommon for children to start puberty as young as 8 or 9." I started puberty at 10 and I wasn't the first one in my 5th grade class! There were many girls who started getting their period in 4th grade, which I remember because we had our backpacks put in the back of the classroom and one of the girls went to her backpack after getting permission to go to the bathroom and the teacher yelled at her in front of the class "NEVER KIND YOU CAN'T GO TO THE BATHROOM IF YOU'RE JUST GOING TO PLAY IN THERE! SIT BACK DOWN!" until she held up a pad in front the class of 25 kids. (And my only thought was "please God let me a genetic anomaly that never gets a period" I also had a very through sex education.)

Adults don't even understand how young puberty starts nowadays. This is something that's been noticed and researched.

So no CHILDREN are, in fact, starting puberty.

in conversations about sex education for children many people fall back on teaching children to recognize and, hopefully, report predatory behavior as the primary reason why this education is good, and obviously I don't disagree with that! when I educate my 4th-6th students, we spend a significant amount of time talking about boundaries and consent and drilling in to the kids' brains that they do NOT need to tolerate inappropriate touching or other behavior from anyone, not even adults who might try to pressure them into thinking otherwise.

BUT! but but but! I think it's also really important to remember that preparing for the worst case scenario isn't the only reason to educate kids about sexuality and their bodies! kids deserve to enter puberty understanding all of the changes they'll experience, and not just the growing and sweating. it's good for kids to understand the new desires they might start experiencing! it's good to know about intense new crushes and erections and wet dreams and sexual fantasies and masturbation! those things can be really, really scary and confusing for young people who don't have any framework to understand them, and it's really easy to feel like you're doing something dirty and inappropriate if no one has told you that sexual pleasure and curiosity is normal, healthy, and good.

good sex ed should help students feel comfortable and safe expressing their sexuality! that's crucial!
