Today, the agriculture technology we are going to discuss is very new to its use. The use of this technology in farming can play a vital role in saving water and restoring soil biota. Using them in dry areas and very useful where water is less available.
What is Hydrogel?
Hydrogels are a water-absorbent polymer material which is also known by different names like Agriculture Super Absorbent Polymer (SAPs), water gel, and others. It is made of synthetic material which can absorb 400 times more water than its weight without getting dissolved in the water. They are used to improve irrigation schedules rather than considering them as a growing medium. Hydrogel has a various industrial application like, in horticulture where it can improve water retention ability of the soil and other places.

Hydrogel In Agriculture
SAPs are sugar like white hygroscopic material that swells in the water and can retain moisture without the risk of burning. Super Absorbent Polymers used in agriculture are made from acrylic acids and a cross-linking agent like potassium by the solution. This polymer process is called potassium polyacrylate agriculture.
The water-absorbent capability greatly depends upon the cross-linking material type and their quality and quantity. These Polyacrylates are non-toxic, non- irritating, and non-corrosive, which is also tested to be biodegradable in nature. Its degradation rate is 10 - 15% per year and can release up to 95% water to the plant root.
Using Hydrogel for agriculture technology is increasing day by day and it is improving the farming crop yield by reducing the watering process yet enhancing the crop cultivation and yield. Results also say that the plants under adverse weather conditions are supported by hydrogel and provide more favorable conditions to develop. If used steadily, they can give a high yield of harvest and improves the quality of output in less time by using minimum land and lowest costs. These polymers are also used as soil containers, soil sterilization, and a protective structure in agriculture.
Hydrogel Benefits To Farming Land
They were developed to improve the physical properties of the land by:-
Preventing Water Loss:- An hydrogel for plants acts as water reservoirs at the roots of the plants, as they absorb water from them surrounding (moisture and supplied water) up to 400 times to its weight and release that to the plants root slowly, which prevent leaching and evaporation which earlier leads to water loss.
Reduce Seed Mortality:- The water released by this technique provides an appropriate amount of moisture for seeding maturation and quick germination; thus, this leads to a reduction in seed mortality.
Saves Plant In Cold Regions:- In the regions where the temperature goes below 0-degree Celsius, the death rate of plants is very high due to the freezing of moisture on the roots of the plant. Using SAPs do not lead to moisture freezing on the plant roots, which makes it easy to absorb water for the plant and saves its life from freezing to death.
Improve Virescence Efficiency:- This technique can help in facing the drought-like conditions as it saves water and labor cost. These hydrogels act as a soil conditioner, which prevents leaching from sandy soil, mountainous runoffs, and sloping fields. This will restore soil biota and improves virescence in the crop or plants.
Prevent Overuse Of Fertilizers:- The overuse of pesticides and fertilizers can be reduced with the use of hydrogel technology. This material absorbs the chemicals mixed in the water and slowly release it to the plant. This ensures the limited and efficient use of fertilizers in the fields.
Money-Saving:- Hydrogel polymer has become a method of water conservation by preventing soil erosion and overuse of fertilizers during the farming process resulting in decreased overall operating cost. That is why technology is used in industry planting, drought management, agriculture, and municipal gardening.

Application Method Of Hydrogel Technology
Wet Application:- This method is used for sowing immediately afterward and is adapted for reducing water consumption during irrigation time when water loss is more. In this, the polymer solution is sprayed onto the wetted soil top and let it dry to create a stable water aggregates that resist erosion. It has a positive effect on aggregate stability, hydraulic conductivity, and the distribution of conditioners.
Disadvantages Of Hydrogel
These polymers have been around for a couple of decades. They are not as useful in plant agriculture as appear to be, here is why:-
It is studied that the amount of water absorbed by the SAPs/Hydrogels decreases drastically in the presence of salt or ions in the soil. Though the reality is a bit different, as all type of soil contains some amount of ions/salt in it, so as the fertilizers used for farming.
Most of the soil can hold a reasonable amount of water with them for the plant growth, but if there is insufficient rainfall, the soil water will be depleted. Hence, in that case, hydrogel does not solve the problem.
