Foundation Earth calls for ‘harmonised approach’ to eco-labels: 'This is our opportunity to put commercial pressure and national politics to one side'
Environmental labelling of food and drink products is ‘essential in helping consumers make more informed choices, as well as producers who are given the information they need to innovate in a more sustainable way’. That’s according to Foundation Earth, which formed last year with the aim of rolling out a Europe-wide eco-label scheme by the Autumn of 2022. The organisation has received the backing of global food and drink giants Nestlé, Tyson Foods, PepsiCo, Danone, Starbucks, Co-op, Sainsbury’s and M&S. But Foundation Earth’s plans are being hindered by what it calls “a proliferation and disparities between existing methods and labels”. It’s estimated there are over 120 different types of front-of-pack labels in use on food and drink products globally, all offering to provide shoppers with greater information about the environmental footprint of food. On top of Foundation Earth, there is Eco-Score, (courted by big names in European retail such as Colruyt and Lidl) and Planet-Score in France. Four of the UK's biggest retailers, Co-op, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s and Tesco, will also trial this summer a new environmental labelling system unveiled by grocery-research body IGD.  Individual countries are eyeing their own eco-labels too. For example, Denmark is investing DKK 9m (€1.2m) in the development of a government-run climate label for food. What's more, at present the eco-labels all measure slightly different things in slightly different ways. For example, all are based on lifecycle analysis (LCA) methodology, but this can be sourced from diffent data sets. Planet-Score, meanwhile, is keen to go beyond LCA methodology and address other factors such as pesticide use, climate impact, biodiversity and animal welfare on its labels.  Different methodolgies are confusing consumers and producers But according to Foundation Earth, this flood of groups using using differeent methods when calculating the climate impact of a product “risks leading to more confusion among consumers and industry players”. It is therefore calling on all the different eco-labels to agree a harmonised approach to be rolled out in the EU and UK. The European Commission has, for instance, said it plans to propose a standardised methodology. Foundation Earth has formed what it calls a ‘heavyweight’ political and scientific coalition to set out the key principles for a future eco-labelling scheme for food and drink. The group comprises senior politicians from six countries, a number of Europe’s leading food and environmental scientists, the UN’s climate change body and three influential EU-backed food and climate change initiatives. In a letter to the European Commission and the UK Government, the coalition “calls on all stakeholders to engage openly, inclusively and collaboratively to find the optimised and harmonised solution we crave”. It says that an optimum environmental labelling scheme for food and drink should: - be governed by an independent organisation, - be harmonised across the continent of Europe, - build upon the European Union’s Product Environmental Footprint, - be based upon the foundations of life cycle assessment, - use as much primary data as possible, - allow products to be compared based upon credible and robust product-specific data. The letter stated: “As the future of environmental labelling for food and drink continues to take shape, it is vital that any eventual scoring and labelling scheme is governed by an independent organisation and harmonised across the continent of Europe, building upon the European Union’s Product Environmental Footprint. “Environmental labelling of food should also be based upon the foundations of life cycle assessment, use as much primary data as possible, and allow products to be compared based upon credible and robust product-specific data. “It is encouraging that technical solutions will soon be available to make such a system a reality and that research is already being compiled on how consumer behaviour can be affected by environmental scoring. “Any environmental labelling system that falls short on these core principles not only risks failing to gain the trust of consumers, but would not provide food and drink producers with the product level information they require to introduce sustainable innovations through their supply chains. “It is these small changes - when added together in their millions - that will go the furthest in reducing the industry’s environmental impacts.” In a separate public letter addressed to the other leading labelling schemes, Foundation Earth chief executive Cliona Howie warned that “future generations will not forgive us if we squander this chance” to come together. Howie wrote: “The deployment of multiple schemes, several different label designs and various contrasting methods risks undoing all of our good work. If we fail to come together, we run the real risk of grabbing defeat from the jaws of victory. We will confuse consumers, add costs to producers and retailers and fail to seize the potential of multiplying our efforts and combining our expertise. “Most of all, we risk losing the trust and goodwill of the citizens for whose engagement and understanding our mission depends.” An eco-label summit  Foundation Earth has called a summit in Brussels for September, to be hosted by EIT Food and independently chaired by its chief executive Andy Zynga. EIT Food is the European Union’s food innovation initiative. Those invited from other environmental label scores include representatives from Ecoscore, Planet-Score and IGD. In her letter to the other organisations, Howie wrote: “This is our opportunity to put commercial pressure and national politics to one side and instead come together to deliver the change we all want to see. It is within our grasp to do something extraordinary. Future generations will not forgive us if we squander this chance.” 'It is not about who wins' The summit will be the first of its kind, said Foundation Earth, and has been called in order to explore how the different initiatives can come together to deliver an optimum labelling scheme better and faster – and avoiding unnecessary proliferation. “The ambition is therefore to build a harmonised approach, which means one method and one label deployed at scale across the continent, adhering to the key principles set out in the joint letter,” a Foundation Earth spokesperson elaborated to FoodNavigator. The spokesperson stressed the point of the summit is not an attempt by Foundation Earth to become the dominant label in Europe, but for for all the different labels to agree to use the same methodology. “It is not about whether FE, IGD, Planet or Eco ‘win’ or become the dominate label, it is about us all working together instead of competing, taking on each other’s expertise and agreeing on a harmonised and unified way forward that is delivered better and faster together than it could be alone,” the spokesperson said. “We are not precious whether FE becomes the dominate initiative or not. We are only firm on the key principles of the future optimum scheme and we want to work with the others to ensure they are delivered - so consumers get the clear info they crave and the industry gets the info it needs to innovate in a more sustainable way. It is no more complicated than that. “Everyone loses if there are multiple labels and multiple methods. We do not affect the change we want to see - as it will not enable us to build a more sustainable food and drink industry. The aim of the summit is to avoid this by bringing together the leading initiatives under one roof.” ‘We recognise the need for a harmonised approach’ The other eco-label schemes said they welcome attempts to develop a standardised methodology.  IGD told FoodNavigtor: “IGD recognises the need for a harmonised approach to environmental labelling in the UK to avoid consumer confusion and we have been working in close collaboration with industry, WRAP and Defra to deliver this. We have made good progress, with four retailers trialling environmental labels in a virtual reality setting this summer, as the food industry moves one step closer to developing a consistent environmental labelling scheme. “We are engaging with a wide range of stakeholders and also working with the World Resources Institute to review our methodology to ensure we consider development of labelling schemes in other markets. We welcomed the announcement this week that as part of the government food strategy, it will be developing a mandatory methodology that must be used by those who want to produce eco labels - this will build on the work IGD is leading, ensuring consistency in the data that supports a labelling scheme. We would welcome further discussions with relevant stakeholders and look forward to sharing the results of our trials later in the year. Antoine Thill, representative of the European EcoScore, responded: “We warmly welcome the adoption of a uniform calculation method throughout the EU in order to determine the environmental impact of the products we consume. Offering a comprehensive and meaningful label in all EU - for all kind of products - is at the core of our idea.” EcoScore, he said, supports an “ambitious methodology” that takes into account “the widest range of criteria impacting the environment, without leaving aside scientific assessment and without bringing unnecessary complexities”. In addition, EcoScore supports the idea of compulsory eco-labels on food products, Thill told us. “We think that environmental labelling can be even more efficient if it provides negative information for products that are particularly damaging the environment, while bringing to the fore the ‘greener’ products.” As spokesperson from Planet-Score, however, warned: "Imposing a harmonized frame which does not correspond to a sound and holistic ecological scenario would be a major mistake. Defining and sharing the vision of a sustainable food system for Europe should come first; then designing the information device that shows how to shift towards this vision – this is what we have done with Planet-Score. "We will be happy to collaborate with initiatives which want to go beyond PEF , and carry an explicit and multi-dimensional vision of ecological transition of the food system." Read More Read the full article

Amazon To Launch Drone Delivery Service In California
After ordering goods online, consumers expect to receive them at lightning speed. With new Amazon technology, it is seemingly a possibility with their new drone package delivery service. According to FOX LA, the e-commerce company is testing out a drone delivery option in Lockehard, CA. The town was chosen because of its previous ties to aviation, the company announced on Monday. They will be the first to experience Prime Air deliveries. California State Assemblyman Heath Flora stated: Lockeford residents will soon have access to one of the world’s leading delivery innovations. It’s exciting that Amazon will be listening to the feedback of the San Joaquin County community to inform the future development of this technology. This is how the process works: A customer will place an order, and the drone will fly to their location, release the package in the backyard and leave. It’s reported that the drone will be able to carry packages up to 5 pounds and 400 feet in the air, while flying up to 50 miles per hour. Amazon also says that they’ve been working with the technology “so its drones will be able to operate at greater distances while safely avoiding other aircraft, people, pets, and other obstacles.” At this time, no official launch date has been given. But the company does say the new delivery service will happen this year. Roomies, what y’all think of this? Read More Read the full article

10 Tricks That Help Elegant Kate Middleton Shine Brighter Than Hollywood Stars
Kate Middleton is a real style icon, and many women want to dress like her. Being royalty, the Duchess has to adhere to a strict dress code, but her outfits still become the topic of discussions in social media. At Bright Side, we analyzed Kate’s fashion tricks and found how she manages to look stylish without breaking royal protocol. Catherine has her clothes fitted. Kate Middleton’s style is about perfectly fitting outfits. The Duchess has almost all of her clothes fitted. This allows her to always look chic. Kate is known to be thrifty and often alters her old clothes. So, in 2018, she wore a blue coat during her pregnancy. We saw the altered version of it on the Duchess 2 years later. She chose a few hairstyles and alternates them. From year to year, Kate’s hairstyle hasn’t changed much — brown hair of the below the shoulder-length. She is not fond of fashionable coloring, doesn’t grow her hair longer and doesn’t get short haircuts. Her main hairstyles are a low bun, ponytail, half-up and loose and wavy. Kate simply selects a hairstyle that is suitable for a particular situation: a formal reception, a walk or a red carpet event. She likes subtle prints and patterns. Kate prefers subtle patterns (usually classic polka dots) or different floral prints. Kate managed to style even leopard print in the most sophisticated and subtle way. She knows how to wear a belt. A belt can help you look more elegant and sophisticated — you can emphasize your waist with it or make your legs visually longer. And the Duchess of Cambridge surely knows about this and regularly complements her outfits with this accessory. The length of her skirts depends on the situation. For formal events, Kate usually chooses plain classic dresses that are knee-length or slightly lower, without flashy prints. At social events, the Duchess appears, as a rule, in floor-length dresses. She can also complement her dress with lace, ruffles, or sequins. Catherine has almost stopped wearing skirts above the knee and mini skirts. Perhaps this is due to the fact that this style doesn’t correspond to the royal dress code and doesn’t make her look more elegant. She complements her outfits with a collar. Sometimes Kate adds interesting details to her simple, classic outfits. And one of her favorite tricks is a collar. To present her third child to the world, Kate wore a red dress with a lace Peter Pan collar. She prefers natural makeup. Kate’s regular makeup is about accentuated eyebrows, brown eye shadow, a little eyeliner, natural colored lipstick and blush. She can wear a smokey eye from time to time. Once, Kate was seen with false eyelashes. However, they also looked so natural that it was even difficult to distinguish them from the real ones from a distance. Makeup artists explain that this effect can be created by using eyelashes with the thinnest band, which will add only a little bit of volume to your eyelashes. She knows a thing about cuts and seams. Kate knows how to emphasize the curves of her figure with strategic cuts and seams. With the help of these elements, you can add structure to the shape of your body. She likes to wear striped shirts in everyday life. A striped shirt has become the Duchess’s trademark. When Kate needs a simple casual outfit, she opts for a striped top. Such blouses or T-shirts are part of a basic wardrobe, they can be paired with any bottom and always look good. She sends messages to the world with the help of brooches. Royal protocol and Kate’s own reserved style don’t let her go overboard. Instead, the Duchess expresses her opinion through small details in clothing or jewelry, in particular brooches. For example, a brooch in the shape of an oak branch is an important symbol of the Middleton family. And during visits to Canada, Kate often wears a brooch in the shape of a maple leaf, which is the symbol of the country. Do you like Kate Middleton’s style, or do you think it’s too strict for you? Tell us in the comments below. Bright Side/Girls stuff/10 Tricks That Help Elegant Kate Middleton Shine Brighter Than Hollywood Stars Read More Read the full article

How to easily reach level 100 in Fortnite Season 3 using Reality Fruit and Weeds
Tumblr media
Fortnite quests are a hot trend whenever a new season drops and players are eager to level up faster and gain more XP to claim Battle Pass rewards. This time around with Darth Vader sitting at level 100, players are finding legitimate ways like using Reality Fruit to level up to 100 faster than usual. Ever since Fortnite buffed up the Accolade XP in-game following community backlash, loopers are finding ways to exploit the buff and get to level 100 to start grinding Bonus Battle Pass rewards. Some are driving Ballers around Rave Cave non-stop to complete a milestone, while others are taming wild animals and riding them to greater distances. However, the easiest way to gain a bunch of XP in a single action hides behind the mysterious Reality Sapling and the Weeds that grow around it. To grow a sapling that bears the ‘Fruit Loot’, players need to find Reality Seeds spread across the island in Reality Bulbs and place their sapling within a biome. - Read More: The Rock hints at Fortnite X Black Adam Collab in Chapter 3 The sapling, later on, grows larger and bears fruit every 6 minutes of game time that grants them varying loot tiers. However, players also need to clear the weeds surrounding the sapling for the next fruit to grow and tier to evolve. Turns out, that bearing fruit and clearing out weeds is giving players a huge amount of XP. Here’s how you can do it. Use Reality Sapling and Weeds to get to Level 100 faster in Fortnite Season 3 The video above by content creator GKI (aka Glitch King) shows a legitimate method that players can use to get over 100,000 XP in a single match. The method is not limited to one level or match as it is limitless. To perform the method, you need to drop near the areas where you can find trees connected to the Reality Tree, which are Greasy Grove, Rave Cave, and Reality Falls. Once you drop into that area, you can find a bunch of Reality Saplings that have Fruit on them. After you land near a Sapling, pluck all the fruits one by one from it as fast as you can. You will then be able to notice the XP level stacked as x3. Once all fruits are plucked, then clear out the Weeds surrounding the sapling in a similar way. - Read More: Fortnite Soundwave Series: How to collect Gen Hoshino Concert Coin and get 40,000 XP That will again grant you a bunch of XP stacked in 3s and you will at least bypass one level in your Battle Pass. Once you are done with that sapling, keep on rotating amongst these biomes repeating these actions with all saplings you can find. The method cannot get you banned as it is a bug that a live Battle Royale match has and since Epic buffed up the XP, you can use it as many times as you want. At the end of a match, an average XP of around more than 100,000 will be shown at the bottom of the screen. - Read More: Fortnite players discover game-breaking glitches in Rave Cave in Season 3: “They need to fix this” You can also perform this method in a Team Rumble match where you can land on your own territory and claim Reality Fruits from saplings without the risk of getting eliminated by an opponent. Players have already started working with this method and have gained over 400,000 XP from just a couple of matches. More XP exploits can be seen in the future as Epic takes steps to fix the broken XP system this season. However, players are still using everything they can to level up and finish the pass as soon as they can so they are ready for Indiana Jones as he arrives to the loop soon. Mermade makes cell-based scallops with circular aquaponics tech: ‘Our technology is relevant for the entire cell-based meat industry’
Tumblr media
Jerusalem-based Mermade Seafoods is leveraging cellular agriculture to put ‘more sustainable’ seafood products on shelves. The company is working on a line of seafood alternatives to be produced in a bioreactor, rather than the ocean, starting with the scallop. But in an industry first, the start-up is developing a circular method growth media platform leveraging aquaponics technology. “We’re the only ones doing this,” Mermade Seafoods co-founder and CEO Daniel Einhorn tells FoodNavigator. ‘We need more affordable, sustainable, tasty and healthy protein’ Mermade was created by three co-founders – CEO Einhorn, CTO Dr Rotem Kadir, and COO Dr Tomer Halevy – in response to the agri-food industry’s negative environmental impact. Globally, the sector is responsible for an estimated one-quarter of all greenhouse gas emissions. “Not only do we have the imminent climate crisis, and we need to make a drastic change by 2050, when we’ll have a global population of 10bn people,” Einhorn explained. At the same time, demand for protein is on the rise. By 2050, overall protein consumption is expected to double and marine-based proteins are predicted to take a growing market share. This is another reason for concern, suggested Einhorn. The health of the oceans is ‘deteriorating fast’, he told this publication. “I’m not sure that everyone understand that the health of the entire planet is reliant on the health of the oceans, which supplies 50% of the oxygen and absorbs carbon dioxide. It’s all connected. “In short, we need a more affordable, sustainable, tasty and healthy protein source.” Combining aquaponics with cellular agriculture Like a growing number of start-ups, Mermade believes the solution lies in cellular agriculture. However, the start-up believes cell-based meat can be produced even more efficiently and sustainably – and is turning to aquaponics to make this happen. Aquaponics combines aquaculture – the growing of fish and other aquatic animals – with hydroponics, whereby plants are grown without soil. Essentially, the aquaculture water provides the nutrients for the plants to grow. Mermade Seafoods COO Dr Tomer Halevy. Image supplied. Mermade’s solution leverages aquaponics technology to limit the amount of waste in cell-cultured protein production, explained CTO Dr Kadir. “The problem with is that it is very costly and does not fully take into account the massive scale-up required in the future. During the growth cycle, the cells produce a lot of waste – mostly ammonia, phosphates, lactic acid, and metabolites – that are excreted into the media during the proliferation phase,” he told this publication. Most companies discard this spent media, which still contains valuable biological components, before replacing it with new media, we were told. Yet spent media should not be considered ‘waste’, the CTO stressed: “It still contains a lot of good nutrients that the cells didn’t get a chance to consume.” Mermade is working to employ the concept of aquaponics on a cellular level. It has coined this merging of these two technologies ‘cytoponics’. The company is taking what the cells ‘produce and excrete’ into the media, which is predominantly ammonia and other ‘wasteful’ products, and transferring it into another bioreactor containing microalgae. The ammonia-rich ‘waste’ product enables the production of algal biomass, which in turn produces ‘clean and oxygenated’ water. Mermade can then use that biomass to feed its cells. “It’s a circular process with almost no ingredients wasted or thrown away,” explained Dr Kadir. Mermade expects this process will allow it to reduce production costs ‘dramatically’. “This is a real gamechanger in the industry. “The technology we’re developing is going to be relevant for the entire cell-based, pharma, and alternative protein industries whenever companies are using cells.” As the ‘only ones’ in the industry doing this, Mermade says it is truly rethinking cell-cultured protein production for the food industry. “We know the hurdles this industry needs to face to be viable, sustainable, and scalable, which got us thinking: How can we look at this differently and bring a new solution to the industry?” Dr Kadir recalled. Homogenous scallops for reduced time to market Indeed, this is where Mermade differs from other cultivated meat start-ups working hard to develop cell-based beef, chicken, and seafood. Rather than putting all its energy into the final product on the plate, Mermade is placing greater emphasis on the process. That is not to say the start-up does not have a product pipeline and strategies in place to reach the end consumer. Centring on seafood in general, Mermade plans to start out with cell-based scallops. The reason for this is at least two-fold, CEO Einhorn explained: From an R&D perspective, scallops have the ‘most simple shape and texture’ to replicate of all meat analogues. And secondly, conventional scallops are regarded a premium, expensive seafood, making price parity less of a challenge. Further, scallops are ‘well-liked’ and ‘super nutritious’. In terms of market size, scallops are worth an estimated $8bn, which adds to appeal for disruption. Mermade Seafoods was founded COO Dr Tomer Halevy, CEO Daniel Einhorn, and CTO Dr Rotem Kadir. Image supplied. “Imagine if we managed to achieve and then tried to come up with a whole cut steak product, which would be yet another completely separate R&D feat and a very hard one at that,” said the CEO, suggesting going after a technically challenging product would extend the start-up’s time to market. “I wouldn’t call low hanging fruit, because the really high hanging fruit here is the scalable process. That’s the Holy Grail of the industry.” So just how ‘simple’ is a scallop to replicate? Well, as the CEO pointed out, scallops are rarely served in its shell. For the most part, they are sold simply as the adductor muscle – that recognisable ‘golden medallion’. In terms of texture, it’s ‘pretty firm’ and homogenous throughout the cut. “It’s so homogenous,” explained Einhorn. “You don’t feel like you’re eating the muscle texture of steak, nor is there a separate fatty tissue. No matter where you cut the muscle, it is the same texture. That’s the huge advantage when it comes to food engineering efforts.” A culture of isolated scallop cells. Image supplied. To make a large-scale impact, Mermade will need to go after more than one market segment. While cell-based scallops will serve to ‘drive business growth and profit’, to ‘transform the entire industry’ the start-up plans to use its scallop products as a ‘foothold’. “We’re going to show to the industrial world that we can commercialise a cell-based seafood product…and then replicate that success in other seafoods with our core technology.” Next up in the pipeline will likely be other marine molluscs, and then potentially crustaceans. Where to commercialise? Mermade predicts its first product will reach the market within the next three years. To achieve this, the company will have to undergo regulatory approval processes – and depending on the region, some will be more stringent than others. In Singapore, for example, a cell-cultivated chicken ingredient has already been approved for consumption. “We are aware that regulatory approvals in Asia could be faster, and we are anticipating further regulatory advancements in that region,” said Einhorn. “Also, the Asian market consumes more seafood, scallops, and shellfish in general. So that’s certainly a market we’re interested in.” Elsewhere, Mermade has its eyes on the US. It’s the ‘second largest market’, and the start-up anticipates adoption to be ‘more predictable’. “It’s a big market inclined to adopt sustainable alternatives.” Read More Read the full article

Gabrielle Union Says She’s Been Suffering From PTSD For 30 Years After Being Raped
Gabrielle Union recently opened up about her 30-year struggle with anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder, as she encouraged suffering with the disorders to support and love one another. In an Instagram post on Wednesday, the ‘Being Mary Jane’ actress explained that she’s been battling with mental health issues since she was sexually assaulted at the age of 19. Union detailed how her day-to-day activities have been impacted all of these years. As a rape survivor, I have battled PTSD for 30 years. Living with anxiety and panic attacks all these years has never been easy. There’s times the anxiety is so bad it shrinks my life. Leaving the house or make a left hand turn at an uncontrolled light can fill me with terror.” Gabrielle continued, explaining that even the most exciting parts of her life have turned grey as a result of her anxiety. She shared a video of herself standing on the red carpet at the 2022 Met Gala in a beautiful white gown alongside her husband, Dwyane Wade. Anxiety can turn my anticipation about a party or fun event I’ve been excited about attending (Met Ball) into pure agony. When we tell y’all what we are experiencing, please believe us the 1st time we mention it. No, it’s not just like being nervous and everyone experiences and deals with anxiety differently and that’s OK.” Gabrielle Union previously spoke about her experience with PTSD, and detailed being raped at gunpoint. During a social media campaign in 2018, Union stated that it was her responsibility to tell her story of sexual assault and help other women stand up for themselves. “You can literally be anything you want to be. PTSD isn’t a death sentence.” Want updates directly in your text inbox? Hit us up at 917-722-8057 or click here to join!   Read More Read the full article

‘It is clear further inflation is still to come’: Higher food prices expected beyond 2023
“It is clear further inflation is still to come.” The sobering verdict of Barclays equity research analyst Andrew Lazar as he reflected on the higher pricing on display across the packaged foods sector. Indeed, Lazar noted, food companies are even suggesting inflation could be as significant next year as it has been in 2022. “Bottom line, Barclays expects continued tightness in the grain and fertilizer markets lasting beyond 2023 – which suggests further pressure on input costs for packaged food players from here,” he observed. Some industry insiders are suggesting that fertiliser costs will remain pressured for at least two more years as a rising global population and increasing requirements from the food sector compete with higher demand from non-food industries like biofuels. This is having a knock-on impact on grain prices as nitrogen consuming crops - like corn, maize and wheat - reach new highs and the global stocks-to-use ratio reaches its lowest level in 20 years. Ukraine conflict adds oil to the fire Lazar said Barclays sees ‘multiple reasons’ for the supply demand dynamic to remain constricted in the coming years.  Even before Russia’s offensive in the Ukraine, potash and nitrogen markets were being squeezed by existing Belarus restorations. European nitrogen production has been further hit by rising gas prices and uncertainties over the gas supply to the region from Russia. As leading exporters, Ukraine and Russia export limitations – which have been linked to Russia’s blockade of Black Sea ports – are further hampering the grain and oilseed markets. In a normal year, Ukraine grows enough food (mostly wheat, maize and cooking oil) to feed 400 million people. Nine-tenths of that is shipped through the Black Sea. This year, sea freight is at a standstill. All of this, Lazar said, has served to amplify food security concerns as commodity prices jump. This has resulted in a ripple effect of ‘protectionist policies on exports’ such as Indonesia’s recent move to restrict palm oil exports, China’s restrictions on urea exports and India’s wheat export restrictions. 'Lessons have not been learned' from 2007-8 crisis From a food company perspective, Lazar said it might seem an unlikely time to talk about the profit and loss ledger coming out the other side. Nevertheless, he said: “Stabilization of costs, even at higher levels, would likely be the best outcome, as it would enable companies to get their arms around the supply chain issues and pricing would be in place. In our view, it is much harder to explain why sales are decelerating and promotional activity rising than the alternative, even with the obligatory timing lag of pricing catching up to inflation.” In developed markets, pricing pressure is already seeing consumers tighten their purse strings, trade down and turn increasingly to cheaper private labels. Not great news for the branded CPGs in Lazar's coverage. But looking at poorer developing parts of the world the outlook is far grimmer.  Looking more broadly at the food system and policy landscape, International Panel of Experts on Sustainable Food Systems (IPES-Food) experts say that the Ukraine war escalating into a full-blown food crisis shows lessons of the past were not learned and point to the extreme consequences this situation could have on global political stability.  Their analysis suggests the situation uncovers four ‘fundamental flaws’ in our system of food production and distribution: an over-reliance on food imports; ‘opaque and dysfunctional’ commodity markets and likely ‘excessive speculation’; production rigidities - such as the dependency on fossil fuel fertilisers – that make it difficult for farmers to shift and diversify production; and a ‘vicious cycle of poverty, conflict, and climate change’ that means millions lack the resources they need to adapt to shocks. In particular, IPES-Food expert and Canada Research Chair in Global Food Security and Sustainability at the University of Waterloo Jennifer Clapp stressed, speculation on the commodities markets is having a big impact on food prices and security. “Evidence suggests financial speculators are jumping into commodity investments and gambling on rising food prices,” she said. “Governments have failed to curb excessive speculation and ensure transparency of food stocks and commodity markets - this must be urgently addressed.” These issues were not corrected after the food price crises in 2007 and 2008, which lead to political and economic instability and social unrest, IPES-Food said in a recent report. “A new generation is once again facing mounting food insecurity, and it seems no lessons have been learned since the last food price crisis. Continuing to rely on a handful of food commodities and countries for global food supplies, combined with predatory financiers betting on food, is a recipe for disaster,” warned Olivier De Schutter, co-chair of IPES-Food, and UN Special Rapporteur on Extreme Poverty and Human Rights. With world food prices recording all time highs in March and FAO modelling suggesting numbers of undernourished people could increase by 13 million this year, IPES-Food believes food riots, civil unrest, and repressive government tactics ‘seem likely’. “It’s alarming to see rising prices and the threat of hunger and food riots return to many countries in Africa. Rebuilding regional sovereign grain reserves is a key to resilience when these sorts of shocks hit - West Africa has made some progress, but it’s a wakeup call and all regions need support to accelerate this,” Mamadou Goïta, Mali, IPES-Food expert and executive director of Institut de Recherche et de Promotion des Alternatives en Développement Afrique (IRPAD Afrique), said. So, what can be done? Looking at the current crisis, De Schutter said ‘we can only hope that this time will be different’. The report authors warn against short-sighted responses that will exacerbate the crisis, such as the suspension of environmental regulations, ramping up industrial food production, and further promoting export-oriented fertilizer-dependent agriculture. Instead, IPES-Food is advocating structural changes to the food system that will help smooth out future disruptions. “Making our food systems resilient, diverse and less reliant on fossil fuels will help ensure the next shock - whether from conflict or climate change - does not spark another crisis,” De Schutter said. IPES-Food recommendations: - provide financial assistance and debt relief to vulnerable countries, - crack down on excessive commodity speculation and enhance market transparency, - build regional grain reserves, - diversify food production and restructure trade flows, - reduce biofuels, livestock numbers, and reliance on fertilizers and fossil energy in food production.
