                                  prestige     seems     to     be     no     longer     a     word     that     HOPE’S     PEAK     embodies.     a     running      gag     at     this     point.     a     fool’s     game     to     be     had,     apparently.     god,     repetition     is     so     boring!     and     yet,     hope’s     peak     had     the     audacity     to     sit     such     an     atrocious     ideal     right     in     front     of     her     face,     huh.     to     pull     it     off     as     a     mere     coincidence     that     he’s     a     copy,     a     boring     replication     of     one     of     her     classmates.     that’s     all     he     is,     isn’t     he?     just     a     second     hand     imitation.     a     pitiful     fool     that     has     nothing     to     do     with     her     grand     scheme     of     things.     …      disgusting.    

                             ❜          ultimate     detective,     huh     …                ❜     he     lives     in     a     shadow.     he’s     not     even     a     mirror     image     of     kirigiri.     how     miserable.     she     sees     his     personality     before     there’s     any     interaction.     it’s     shameful.     it’s     quiet.     it’s     hideous.     she     hates     it     already.     disgust     filling     her     the     cavity     of     her     chest     so     quickly    that     junko     hopes     she     can     choke     on     it!        ❜            tell     me     something,     how’d     you     worm     your     way     into     this     school?     i     find     it     hard     to     believe     that     hope’s     peak     is     sooooo     INTERESTED     in     detective     work     that     much!            ❜      oh!     hey,     there’s     that     spark,     the     one     that     hadn’t     been     there     when     she     first     approached     him.     the     one     that     straightens     her     body     out,     puts     on     her     best     ‘     enoshima     junko,     ultimate     fashionista!     ‘     voice.      (    or     is     it     her    ultimate     despair     person?     who     knows!     )    it’s     friendly,     casual     but     mischievous     all     at     the     same     time.    and     here     she     is,          she’s     crowding     his     space!     trying     to     get     a     fresher     perspective     on     him,     maybe     this     one     will     surprise     her     a     little!       ❜            i     mean,     c’mon!     i     would     totally     hate     to     have     to     be     just     a     imitation     or     whatever!     that     would     so     suck,     don’cha     think!          so,     you     gotta     bring     somethin’     new,     am     i     right?     am     i     totally     right?     what’dya     do     to     be     on     the     same     level     as     kirigiri,     huh!            ❜ 

            oh, how her attitude makes you sick to your stomach. despite her cheerful voice & childlike curiosity, there’s something very...off about the way she carries herself––something darker than meets the eye. perhaps you’re imagining things, but you swear she’s looking at you like a lab rat –– analyzing every little thing you do. ❝ you do have a point but... i-i don’t think the possibility of having many students with the same talent is t-too far-fetched, ‘ you try to respond evenly, but your anxiety is given away immediately. 

             golden eyes widen slightly at the mention of kirigiri, but it takes you every ounce of strength you have to not roll them to the ceiling. this again ? she’s not the first person to compare you to kirigiri & she probably won’t be the last. hope’s peak granted you the same title after all. you know that your backgrounds are completely different & she has more experience, but it seems that no matter what you do, everyone throws you into her looming shadow. & the longer you dwell in that darkness, the more those thoughts begin creeping into the crevices in your brain: not good enough, not experienced enough, not smart enough. 

              when she leans forward, her cologne pushes your head into a sickeningly saccharine pool & holds it there, waiting for you to succumb to its depths. you try to duck away as subtly as you can, reestablish the space you worked so hard to claim. for a moment, you don’t know how to respond. your story is boring & one-dimensional –– a simple miracle that changed your life. perhaps it was the same for kirigiri, but she had more time to hone her craft, more family members that supported her aspirations. 

             ❝ ah, that being said, i wouldn’t call myself a real detective like kirigiri-san –– i’m more of an apprentice. i happened to solve a murder case before the police did, & shortly after, i got the letter from hope’s peak. i l-like it here, b-but it was all by chance... ‘ 

             your gaze drifts back down to your notes like a tired bird perching on a phone line. all you want to do is get back to work & try to make an effort on proving yourself.

On writing stutters

Anonymous said: My character stutters when he talks in class or to people he isn’t close to, but I’m not exactly sur on how to write this without it being annoying or disrupting the flow. Any tips on how to write stutters?

When it comes to characters that don’t normally stutter, or that can control the stutter most of the time, or if the stutter is out of shock or surprise, it is prefered to use a dialogue tag. 

Example:

“I don’t think this is a good idea,” he stuttered.

There are two other different ways to write a stutter, and in each of them you use the hyphen and the comma, respectively. The one with the comma is called stammer, which is pretty similar to a stutter except it is with a full word or short sentences. 

The interesting thing about a stutter is that you don’t just take every word and stumble over it. It varies. You can stumble over every word that starts in a consonant, or every other word with a consonant (stutter), or just plain words (stammer). 

If you make your character stumble over every word, it seems a bit over the top. And even if it happens in real life, readers see it as exaggerated and annoying. At least I do. 

Make him stutter with certain sounds of consonants, not all of them.

Stutter example:

“I d-don’t think this is a good idea,” he said.

Stammer example:

“I don’t, I don’tthink this is a good idea,” he said. 

I think learning about stutters is also helpful. And while stuttering is a neurological and physiological speech impediment, a stammer can be out of stress or excitement, which means anyone can stammer.

If you want you can make your character both stammer and stutter, if you think it won’t be annoying to read and you don’t exaggerate it. 

Something that you shouldn’t do (or at least not a lot) is write the stutter and use a dialogue tag at the same time. It’s kinda redundant. 

Don’t

“I-I don’t think this is a good i-idea,” he stuttered.

I think by writing the stutter I already got the idea he was stuttering.

Some extra info:

[The severity of stuttering] may also vary in the same individual from day to day and depending on the speaking situation. Saying one’s name and speaking to authority figures may be particularly difficult. For some individuals, fatigue, stress, and time pressure can increase their tendency to stutter. When stutterers feel compelled to hide their stuttering, it generally becomes worse.

Patterns of stuttering behavior also vary. Some individuals try to avoid stuttering by pausing before words, substituting words, and interjecting phrases such as “you know,” “well actually,” “um,” etc., whenever they anticipate a block.  Quoted from the National Stuttering Association

anyway i’m sorry i haven’t been here! work has been kicking my ass, & i found out that a friend from university had passed away, so i’ve been taking a break from tumblr for a while. i will be on from time to time to work on replies, but for now, activity will be pretty low until further notice.
