Social media is a platform that we never expected to need until it was invented. Previously, we were grateful for receiving news from newspapers, radio, and television, or media for short. But now that we have social media platforms, it is much easier to keep up with the news, especially when there are natural disasters and calamities.

When it comes to the lives of every Filipino in our country, especially when there is a natural disaster, social media is a huge help. Because social media is open to everyone and contains all of the information, news, and documentaries that people may require. Here are some of the services provided by social media:

Spreading news and precautions.

Social media aided everyone in our country by spreading information about various disasters that occurred in our country. It is unavoidable that's why people need to be aware of the precautions they must take in order to survive and be safe; this is where social media comes into play, because social media is where all the information is disseminated, allowing people to see what they need to do and prepare.

Giving information about the areas affected.

Officials from the government may use social media to share health, scientific, and expert information. When a disaster strikes, officials use social media to inform the public about where help is available and when it is expected to arrive in the affected areas. Any photos or videos shared on social media help to document the devastation in the affected areas and locate survivors. During a disaster, social media provides real-time news — road closure updates, evacuation routes, designated help areas, shelter locations, and more.

During disasters, it aided families, social workers, and the government in sorting through information. Thanks to social media, every family can easily communicate with relatives in different regions, particularly those who live outside the country. It can be used by social workers to teach people about disasters.

Conducting different hotline numbers and Giving essentials to the affected areas.

Social media can disseminate hotline numbers faster than traditional media. Some media require electricity to function. However, using your phones and the internet, you can spread and conduct hotline numbers based on the area affected on social media, so that those who are affected, but have a social media account will be able to see the hotline numbers.

Social workers will know where and what areas are in need and they will help, with the use of social media.

It has been a great honor that different social media platforms came to us because there are many things that social media can provide in times of calamity and disaster, that is why we can be referred this as journalists social media. Presented by:

“The Childhood Province of the Late Severina- Mauban, Quezon”

The sun is already set as we are getting ready to leave our house in Quezon City to go and reminisce, enjoy, and explore the childhood province of our late grandmother, Mauban, Quezon. 5 hours is the expected several hours we are going to consume before getting there.

There are 2 types of routes you can choose to use to go to the small province of Mauban. When you want to experience the breezy and fresh wind and see the beautiful mountains of the South, the Antipolo route is fitting for you! On the other hand, if you don’t want to get dizzy and just wanted to have a long drive with your companions well, the SLEX route is the right route for you! As for me, I am not a fan of zigzag roads that’s why I chose the SLEX route, but the negative side of it is that it is always traffic because you will pass the “bayan” of Laguna, Batangas, and some part of Quezon, but you don’t need to worry because there are diversion roads that you can use so that you can no longer pass in the “bayan” of these provinces.

The traveling hours are tiring and it will keep you hungry, no need to worry! If you want to eat a snack and something sweet before going to Mauban, Sariaya, Quezon will not let you down! Their Pinagong bread is a great pair of coffee or hot choco. For only 15 pesos, you can taste the delicious bread that they always serve hot for their travelers. If you want to eat before passing the mountain of Sampaloc, Quezon going to Mauban and your route is the Antipolo route, you can stop by in the Province of Lucban and taste their Pansit Habhab. See? There are many things you can eat before arriving in the happiest province of Mauban.

Finally! After passing the Sampaloc, Quezon, or for the SLEX route is the Tayabas, Quezon you finally arrived in Mauban, Quezon. The beauty of this small “bayan” of Quezon province is realistic! The people are all kindhearted and you can see that they are all willing and open for the travelers. They are “Maubanin” by the way. How did I know that? Of course, I am proud that my grandmother is a Maubanin.

Mauban is famous for its beautiful Island, Cagbalate. The white beach, glimmering sea, and sand bars are the attractive things you can see there. How to get there after you arrived in the bayan of Mauban? First things first, you need to go to the tourism department to pay fees and other things so that you can go there. Secondly, you can rent a private boat for 2000 pesos good for 15 people, or if you are a solo traveler, you can get there via public boat for only 100 pesos. Many resorts can accommodate you after you get there so, you don’t need to worry. Last, enjoy and have a great memory of the beautiful Island of Cagbalate. Always remember that protecting our environment is an essential thing we must do so that we can always back there.

Enjoy the moment there and find the hidden treasures that you can share with your friends and families. Mauban is a great part of Quezon. The history; the people; the islands of it are marvelous. How to be a Friend in Times of Pandemic?

When was the last time you saw your friends? Do you still hang out with them? How about in social media, do you often ask them how are they?

A pandemic could be an unused thing to us, generation. The unfamiliarity brought by this COVID-19 virus; The dreadful experience it gave to us is such an absurd thing, but at this time of the widespread, how can we remain our relationship with people we love, especially to our friends? Is the phone call enough? Is liking their post and interacting on Facebook sufficient? Let’s discover how to become a friend in a time of the pandemic.

1. Be with them

Now and then, a few individuals will say that you are simply a friend in spite of you don’t communicate. That’s not the idea today in this time of the pandemic. Everyone is staying in their home; Everyone needs someone to converse their emotion to! They need a friend like you! So don’t say merely are a friend, but at that point you don’t bother to put conversation with them.

Our life today is not simple. The virus is deadly. Everyone can have this. What if there is no tomorrow? What if it is the last day? Always think “This day is my last day” so that you can do the care and the utmost things you can do for your friend. So, talk to them! It doesn’t need to be every day, but at least communicate with them once in a while.

Communication is not a one-way thing, it’s not enough to ask them how are they, yet you don’t want to share with them how are you doing, so the next step is….

  2.  Be yourself

Your companions ought to get to know you too! So, be open and say as much as you will. Indeed, even though they don’t ask you because they are afraid or shy, attempt to tell your stories as well! That’s one thing they can feel for you that they are important since you tell your stories to them.

3. Do the things you both like

Play together, watch together, and do the things you like. Enjoy the moment, even you are far away from each other. This is the new normal now, so you must do these things normally. Staying with them in this pandemic is such a lovely thing to do.

4. Pray for them

As I have said in the first things, COVID-19 is dangerous. Praying for your loved ones is the most important thing you’ll do for them. Your friends are not a robot, they can get this virus so you must pray for them. Also, there are many struggles your friends don’t talk about, so instead of trying them to tell you what it is, you should pray for them.

Friendship is not only about communicating; you can be their friend even though they don’t know that you are praying for them. So, pray for your friends.

See? It is not hard to be a friend in this pandemic time. I know there are many things that you have in your mind about how to be a friend at this time of the pandemic. Let me know in the comments.

Companions are the ones who you treat like your siblings. They are your soulmates who you met. They are important. So, always remind them that they are important. You are also important to them. Your phone call is important; Your “Let’s do it together” is important. They are waiting for you “How’s your day, friend?”. They want to be your friend. They want to ask you those things! “The Boat is Sinking, Group Yourself into Seven”

May 2021. Lightning, thunder day for a family of seven in the sunny weather of summer 2021. While everyone is preoccupied with their different agendas for a day, the mother and the father are getting ready to go to the hospital for a check-up because the father has not been feeling well for the past few days.

“Can we just cancel it?" The father said. “No, let’s do this. It’s for your own sake”- his wife encouraged him. Their name is Jojo and Riza, the King and the Queen of their house. They left and went to the hospital for a check-up.

In this time of the pandemic, everyone is anxious about going to places like the hospital. It is like a haunted place and a dark maze for them. Whenever you go there, chances in your life to have COVID-19 will become higher. That’s why Jojo is trembling to go there.

“I decided. I’m just going to do the swab testing today, but not in the hospital”—the father concluded and thankfully Riza agreed to him. So, they went to a swab testing area to have a test, and after that, they went home.

In the house, everyone is there except the oldest child, Eunice because she is on the front line and she has a duty on that day. The morning sunshine in the home seems normal. It is quiet, yet you can feel the wind is not so breezy. It is like a normal day for their four daughters, namely Eunice, Lalaine, Gillian, Adie, and their one and only son, Alden.

This family is a cheerful, harmonious, lovely family. They are like a perfect basketball team because everyone is cooperative and playing. The cheerful them easily changed on that day when the swab result of the father came out. It was positive. Riza and Jojo are the first ones to know and after a few minutes, they finally say it to their children. Without further things, their children decided to have a swab test also, and, unfortunately, Lalaine and Adie tested positive. It was like a bomb that exploded on their boat.

The day was like a long, long journey by boat, and that boat is sinking. The boat is sinking, so the family needs to group themselves into 3/4. The second floor of their house became a COVID-19 facility for the 3. Everyone is working and finding a way they can survive this. That day is not the longest day for the positive love ones because when their isolation started, that’s the longest day among the longest days for them.

It was hard because of all of their plans, works, and other things that they need to finish, they can't be able to do it as of now. From the point of view of the youngest child, Adie, for week 1 of isolation, she doesn’t want to talk to everyone. “I am not sad nor happy. I am just going with the flow. If it happens, it happens."— This was her when her friend asked her how is she was feeling. She doesn’t seem right, and all she does is do her modules and academic stuff while she was in isolation. In her thoughts it was hard, but she knows she can do it, that’s why she easily accepted the challenge.  

In the rooms, there are only two things that they know, it is the day and the night. They always wait for the day to end so that they can finish this 14-day-quarantine.

The 3 of the family experienced mild symptoms, and everyone is having a hard time. Jojo is not a fan of following health protocols. He always said that “If it happens, it will happen", and that’s why they are suffering right now. The family is quiet because of the bomb that the COVID-19 gave to them. It may be easy for us to visualize their story, but it is hard inside.

The funny thing is that as the 1st week of their isolation goes by, they are still hanging in there. Everyone in the family lives normally except in the isolation part. They are still going strong, and I am proud to say that the first thing they do after they found out is that they pray. They pray together through the use of mobile phones and the internet. They accepted the challenge, and they fought not on their own, but with our Lord God. As the quote says, “a family who prays together stays together” and that’s how they fought a good fight and finished the race.

Not everyone can face a challenge like this like eating spicy-flavored ice cream with a smile on the face. We can be sad, exhausted, anxious, depressed, but everyone can have a family that can support us in a challenge like this. It can be a friend, a sibling, or your loved ones. You only need to be still and trust the process.

This family taught us that no matter what happens, the boat may sink, but the love and the care of the family would always be there. So, it’s okay to feel that you are not okay, that feeling is accepted, but you should not stay with that feeling, you should step up.

“Mother knows best”

“Mothers know best, listen to your mother”- tells the mother of Rapunzel to her. She continuously says that to her, however, she fizzled to demonstrate it since we all know that the witch isn’t the genuine mother of Rapunzel. In short, she lied.

My mother is not like that. She doesn’t know best. She always says that she doesn’t know this, that, etc. She tends to ask everything. Rosalie Fernandez is her title. A mother of five and a lady who doesn’t know best. She yells; she commands, and she demands on everything. Sometimes, all I want to do is wear an earphone so that I can’t hear her boisterous voice. But I cannot do that, I might see my clothes outside our house haha!

She is not the best mom. Whenever I ask something, she can’t answer it all. Mom doesn’t know better. She is aware that she can’t be the best. But you know what? She doesn’t know that she can’t be, yet she tries really, really hard. She is willing to give everything: her time, effort, and all the things that she has. Let us see first why she became like that.

“I don’t know that, ask you father” the always line that Rosalie says whenever I ask something. Some will think that why she is like that, but as I grew older, I can understand that she is not being herself. She is not certain about everything. And one day, I asked my father what is the reason why he fell in love with my mom, and his answer amazed me, “Because she may not be confident enough, but she is brave.” and that’s how I realize that my mother is the most excellent among the best.

Rosalie Fernandez is the middle child of Severina and Lando. She lives in the humble province of Capiz. Their life is not the thing you’ll see in a pixie story movie. At her early age, her mom and dad decided to separate, and they both have their own family. Because of that, mom needs to go back and forth between my grandpa’s side and the side of my grandma. Her childhood life was her first step for her to become a great mother and thank God because she succeeds the challenges and now, she became one.

The sacrifices from the very start. The time when she chose us over her career, the efforts, and the sleepless nights that she encounters every time someone in our family is sick. She doesn’t know that; that was the finest! The biggest flex here is that she is not only the mother of 5 children, but she is also a volunteer mother to sponsored children of AMG Banlat CDC. She is a volunteer staff who gives mother care to the young people who became sponsored children of that religious organization. That is the ministry of Rosalie, and by that, her children are so proud of her.

Mothers really don’t know what’s the best, yet they do everything to become the best. I always ask myself why mothers are like that? No matter what I do, I realize that I can’t truly understand why they are like that not until I become one. That’s why I can’t understand it now. Mothers are really trying their best. They always do things beyond their limits. The commands, the loud voice, the moody character won’t change the fact that she sacrifices everything, particularly when three of her family members got the COVID-19 virus last May 25, 2021. I know that she is afraid; I know that she is trying to become strong; I know that she has restless nights; I know that she cries, yet she tried not to in front of us. That is the love of a mother who doesn’t know the most excellent for herself

As you can see, there are no such spectacular things in her life, but one thing I can see is that Rosalie doesn’t know how to rest. She gave everything. I don’t want her to suffer. My mom is a strong woman. Yes, she cries, but I know that crying is the key that gave her the strong aura that she wears every day. I don’t know how I say this, but yes, my mom doesn’t know the best for herself, but she knows how to become the best for us her children. Maybe the mother of Rapunzel failed to prove that to her, but my mom will never do that. She may not know everything, but for me, she is the best.
