Slice of Life Drabble : Keigo Takami

It’s too early.

You can tell it’s too early because there’s a hot, heavy weight on your back and the tickle of flaxen hair on your cheek. There’s no whistling kettle in the kitchen and no grumble of traffic coming in through the window above your bed.

In spite of all this, your alarm continues to sing, shrill and grating against the morning stillness.

It’s not often you have to wake up before your boyfriend.

The weight on your back shifts, grumbling, before two strong arms wrap firmly around your middle and tug. The golden trickle of light that spills in through the fluttering curtains is blocked out by a sheet of red.

“Too early,” your boyfriend whines, the puff of his breath against your temple sending shivers down your spine.

“I know birdbrain, but I’ve gotta go. You can go back to sleep.”

The arms tighten and you receive no warning as you’re flipped onto your back, fully encased in a cocoon of golden skin and scarlet feathers.

“Too. Heavy,” you gasp into Keigo’s shoulder.

The pressure on your chest increases as he presses more of his weight on top of you, letting out a series of obnoxious fake snores right beside your ear.

“Bastard,” you mutter halfheartedly, flailing an arm towards the bedside table. “At least let me turn the alarm off.”

This gives him pause. Keigo tilts his head up, sharp chin digging into your sternum as he blinks those lidded golden eyes up at you.

“You’ll stay?”

“I have work,” you respond drily.

He scoffs, a sleepy smirk curving at his plush lips, and you have to fight the urge to kiss it away. Then you’d really end up being late. “You’d rather go to work than spend the morning with your super buff hero boyfriend?”

“Yes. Obviously.”

Wrong answer.

You let out an undignified snort as a finger digs into your side and three feathers attack your neck. He doesn’t let up his relentless tickling until you’re gasping for breath and threatening to wet the bed.

“I’m gonna be late! Keigo!”

He chuckles, dipping down to leave a trail of scorching kisses along your bare collarbone.

“Fine, I guess you can go. But only if you come back.” Your eyebrow twitches up, “Only if I come back?”

“Mm.”

The kisses trail up your neck. “I can go to work if I come back – to my own apartment, mind you – after work?”

“That’s right.”

His lips meet yours, less a kiss and more a press of his smile against yours.

“Deal.”

I was talking about being afraid of people leaving me behind because I'm too sick, and my boyfriend just looked at me and said: "It's my choice to be your boyfriend. It's your friends choice to be your friends. You don't have to understand it, but you have to respect our choice. Don't try to make the decision of whether you're worthy of people on their behalf because that's not your decision to make." I think that's an important thing to remember. That whether we're worthy of someone's time and effort is something others can decide for themselves regardless of whether or not we agree with them. There's a lot of peace in realizing that literally all you have to do is accept the love other people choose to throw your way. That you aren't the one who gets to determine that you aren't worthy of their love. That other people can choose to love you regardless of how you feel about yourself - and that you can learn to respect their choice even though you're feeling unworthy.
