the characters of a treatise of tyrants and thieves — kiru ostayliin
They sat now dwarfed by the shadows of the circular chamber around them, hunched over a desk that ran the circumference of the room. A lit candle to their right, they held a thin, silver blade over the flame, before sliding the tool beneath the wax of a Court seal, whittling with a sure and consistent force. Kiru cared less for perfection in this moment, the seal was marked with the sigil of House Dzarkayn, a sigil the child-herald had long ago crafted a molded copy of, which sat in their small collection of tools they most certainly were not allowed to have.

We interrupt this lovely readalong for more HarperCollins union news.
Namely, the union is on strike. HarperCollins, the second largest publishing house in the United States, has made record profits (in the billions) but refuses to pay its employees a living wage or negotiate in good faith. Unlike the one-day strike earlier this year, this will be an open-ended strike, to last until a fair, good-faith contract is agreed upon.
I cannot overstate the implications here. HarperCollins is a 200-year-old behemoth with over 120 imprints, owned by billionaire Rupert Murdoch. You have reads books from this company, I guarantee it. You have enjoyed movies and TV shows spawned by this company. The workers striking at the blood and sweat responsible for launching those properties you love. And as Harper goes, so goes the rest of the industry. If we raise the living standards for one, so the pressure increases on other companies to raise it for all.
The Harper Union need your support. They have a full thread here, but here’s the gist of what they’re asking:
EVERYONE:
- Donate to the strike fund if you can
- Politely email Harper’s HR ([email protected]) and the CEO ([email protected]) to express your support for the strike and the union.
- Boost their message on social media and among your social circles (here are some assets you can use to do that)
- If you are in the NY metro area, come join the picket line at 195 Broadway in Manhattan!
BLOGGERS/REVIEWERS/BOOKSTAGRAMMERS/BOOKTOKERS:
- If possible, please hold all reviews of Harper titles until the strike is over. (And I would add, if you feel comfortable doing so, tell Harper why.)
FREELANCERS/INDUSTRY HOPEFULS:
- Don’t be a scab. Don’t take new freelance projects or temporary positions while the strike is ongoing.
BOOKSTORES/BOOKSELLERS:
- Share the “I Stand With” graphic
- Print and distribute the union bookmark at your store
AUTHORS/AGENTS:
- Do not submit or sign new contracts to Harper until the union’s own contract is finalized.
———
Please note they are not asking for a boycott on Harper titles. A boycott would harm the authors, who have nothing to do with this, so the union is explicitly requesting no boycott.
Also, please do not @ Harper social accounts to yell at them. Direct all feedback to that peopleteam email. The majority of folks watching those accounts are out on the picket line anyways, and their managers have already been warned that, as non-union members, they risk termination if voice any public support for the strike.
For more info, check out the union’s accounts on Twitter and Instagram. I also recommend this Twitter thread for some hard facts and figures.

hey it's nanowrimo. i have tips bc i've done it about 34 times.
Don't edit. Ever. Stop it. If you just decide to start a new project half thru this one with all new characters, no problem. pick up and keep writing as if you'd already written the first half of that.
"but i spelled it wrong" whatever. "but the grammar" whatever. make it exist first. no time for sense. think like you're working on a typewriter. no backspace. only forward go.
Don't re-read further than a paragraph or two backwards. "did i mention the gun before?" listen - it doesn't matter. if you need there to be a gun there, the gun is there. put it back in once you finish the book.
"i forgot the specifics of X thing i already wrote" whatever. change it, make a note/comment to figure it out later, and just write what makes sense for the moment. "no raquel it's legit the characters name and origin" idc that character is now reborn as Claudius from Elsewhere. it's fine.
only you see your mistakes. nobody else knows. one of the ways writing and dance overlap - only you know the choreography. nobody else will know if you miss a step, so just keep dancing and pretend you meant to do it like that.
it's an illusion that you need to write linearly - from point A to point B to point C. Nah; that's just timeline propaganda. I've written a LOT of books out of order and just reordered them once i've finished. if you have a scene you'd LOVE to write but can't get there yet because of plot, just fuckin write the scene. I've always found its easier to establish "point F" "point J" and "Point A" and then wiggle my way between those scenes.
write what you WANT to write. 230 pages of smut? of well-researched discussion on bread? whatever. the point is to strengthen muscles however you can.
if you miss a day, a week, whatever. not the end of the world. we all have dry days. also time is a myth so u can do this challenge whenever u want.
as soon as you try to write for a specific audience, you kill your voice. you are writing for yourself. stop thinking about how people will take ur book. it don't matter. what matter is u, enjoying writing. i luv u.
play to your strengths. i have characters talk so much because i don't know how to write a plot if it kills me but i'm really good at dialogue so.
i love a flight of fancy. write a poem in there. shift tactics and write in code. keep it fun for yourself.
see what happens if you shift something major about ur main characters - gender, wealth, superpowers. or if you change point-of-view. or if you kill everyone in a big explosion. do NOT edit anything before this or after it. often these little weird one-off exercises teach me what interests me about what i'm working on. it is never what i thought. plus it is a fun way to add like 1k words.
stretch.
it's for fun and for practice. stop doing that project if it's giving you anxiety. once my nano was literally 50k words of half-started stories. just things i tried and tried and tried and wasn't able to flesh out. oops. but i am now 50k words of a better writer.
add dragons?
read books/listen to books on tape/etc. people often make the mistake of "buckling down" to just write. you need inspiration. you need to like. fill up on words. you need to remember how it feels to lose yourself in a story.
i don't have the time or space to really talk about this in this post but a lot of creative people turn to drugs/alcohol because it can help you be more creative. this is harmful, and walking a blade that only cuts deep. if you notice you and your loved ones are turning more to substances, please know i love you and i hope you are able to get help soon. i feel like this almost never gets mentioned because it's kind of a hazy underbelly to art. you are always more important than the work.
on that note. drink your fukin. water.
don't talk about a story until you've finished it. once you tell the story, it exists already, and isn't about discovery. i usually have a very canned "haha we'll see" response.
grapes :) tasty snack.
i love you be free.

rules: share the last seven lines you wrote and tag seven people.
tagged by @godswar & @theinfinitedivides. ty friends! below is an excerpt from cursed gardeners wip (or hundred year dawn).
“Konbanwa, Broom-san,” I smiled, hoping pleasantry would appease it.
Late! It rustled angrily. Late, late, late!
“S-Sorry. Um, is Kaho awake?”
But Broom turned and swept away, abruptly ending our conversation.

wriblr intro!!
hey, everyone!
pronouns are he/they. i'm a web dev by day and an aspiring writer & artist by night. a bit about my writing:
i write fantasy.
i love weird magic.
forest magic!!
faeries, elves, weird nature-inspired creatures/stuff, etc
heavy focus on the platonic aspect of relationships, even in romances, because, well, i'm aroace.
also here for siblings, friends, platonic relationships in general!
most of my characters are nonbinary and in the aro/ace spec, usually masculine-leaning.
i don't write ya or middle grade. all my stuff is adult.
i'm currently reevaluating my wips to see which ones i'd like to keep/work on moving forward, but these two are 100% staying:
#ANTISNOWWHITE
fantasy | post-apocalyptic | mystery | faeries | creepy forest | fairy tale-inspired | revenge & redemption
in a world that was once covered and ruled by a magical, bloodthirsty forest and its monstrous inhabitants, a young prince is exiled to its borders for mysterious reasons and raised by seven shadow wolves until, ten years later, he finally manages to escape. his goal now is simple: get his throne and kingdom back.
#FANTASY ROMANCE WIP
romance | fantasy | faeries | creepy forest | monster li
no blurb yet! but it's a story about rowan, a hunter, and loifa, the deity/faerie that protects his village. set in the same world as antisnowwhite, but with a completely different cast of characters.
my plan is to write a good chunk of fantasy romance wip during nanowrimo. it's my first time writing a romance so it will be interesting.
that's it, i guess! i'm always looking for more writers to follow, especially if we write the same genre!
you can also find me on twitter and instagram.

the maps of a treatise of tyrants and thieves — the isle of vsyhna
It sat in the way of a great cat, its head held high against the dull winter morning, its mane of dark stone topped with gilded spires that fell aimlessly into a cloudbank above, just as gracefully as it ran down against the cliff faces below, all of it topped in a thick dusting of snow and ice. From its crown, between the white marble of the city above, came rivers, steaming in the coolness as they fell into the mud and sea beneath. And it was between these great pillars of water, in the shadowed expanse of space beneath this feline's chin, that the Sunken Cities lay.

photo id — A hand-drawn map that shows the full expanse of the Isle of Vsyhna. Black ink on "old" paper, it has made to look water-stained. Every city, and most major geographic features have been labeled, with a scale that puts it at about the size of Germany. The title card has a background of mountains and clouds and the compass is an overflowing bowl of dark liquid, with an arrow rising from it to point north. The edges of the map are lined in the Vsyhnian conlang.

VORSKRA - A WRITEBLR (RE) INTRODUCTION
Hello, my name is Vall! I used to have another blog (that I will quickly delete as soon as I can) but I had a 2020 existential crisis so big I couldn’t even write or draw or even open tumblr for the life of me. Because of this I felt my blog was stale and that I had to renew it and change a few things so here we are, friends.
A few things about me I guess: I’m an archeologist doing my masters, I’m 22 and I’m tired perpetually. I have 4 cats and 1 dog and tbh I live for them. I’m also an artist (not going to say I’m a good one though I’m not that confident) and I dabble on graphic design.
MY WIPS
a curse most foul - dark fantasy in which everyone gets an existential crisis because so do i all the time. it follows five characters through several thousands of years and a lot of emotional dread.
ama and the painted world - aka the most whimsical, self indulgent fantasy with more mental health undertones that follows a girl who wants very badly to be a sucessful painter but her obsession gets her stuck in her own painted world and now she has to figure out how to leave before it swallows her up.
OTHER BLOGS
butchrofblaviken - a multifandom blog that is mostly video games and I’ll hopefully post my own edits and gifsets on this one. like i’ll actually use this one this time beyond just reblogging shitposts i promise.
vorskra-art - this one is just for art. i’ll reblog art and hopefully also post art at some point as well.  PLEASE IF YOU HAVE AN ART BLOG TELL ME BTW.
MISC
wattpad .   pinterest .   ko-fi.
I will be making a mobile navigation friendly post + proper wip intros as soon as I can which is basically as soon as uni lets me. Hell, just making all these blogs took me a WHILE.
Beneath the read more I will tag people who very kindly asked to be tagged in this intro, thank you guys for following my dumbass all the way here:

the conlang of a treatise of tyrants and thieves — vsyhnian
The main language used by those who live on the island country of Vsyhna, as well as certain parts of northeastern Ashvayr. There are a number of dialects, both spoken and written, though its most distinct can be found along divisions of social class. Only those noble- and highborn are, in accordance with the Marks of Four, given the right to literacy.

photo id under the cut —
Images 1 and 5: Text that reads, "The Vsyhnian Alphabet"
Image 2: Text that shows the conlang (constructed language) alphabet for Vsyhnian. There are four rows of letters which are, in order, vowels (A, Y, I, O), diphthongs (AA, AY, AYH, AI, YH, II, OA), consonants (D/T, K/G, L, M, N, P, R, S, V/F, Z), and H-rule/special case consonants (DH, KH, NH, RH, SH, VH, DZ).
Image 3: Text that reads, "The H-Rule" followed by, "The letter H in the Vsyhnian alphabet does not exist. It acts instead as a modifier in “softening” consonants; most commonly in hardening the sound of those letters, as with D, K, S, and V. The other two, N and R, are considered special cases whereby the sound is only emphasized. The four remaining consonants, L, M, P, and Z, are considered to already be “soft”, save for Z. Z is considered to be “smooth”, meaning that it rolls off the tongue and is often not at all heard as harshly as it is written. It often becomes the special case modifier to D, becoming Dz and therefore smooth."
Image 4: Text that reads, "American IPA Transcription" followed by three columns of text. The first column, from top to bottom, reads, "a: a, y: ə, i: ɪ, o: o, aa: æ, ay: eɪ, ayh: ɑi, ai; e, yh; ɛ, ii: i, oa: u." The second column reads, "d/t: d, k/g: k, l: l, m: m, n: n, p: ph, r: ɾ, s: s, v/f: v, z: z, dh: θ." The third column reads, "kh: tʃ, nh: like raining, rh: r, sh: ʃ, vh: w, dz: ʒ."

HUNDRED YEAR DAWN by @tsainami — a wip introduction.
One hundred years of silence. One hundred years of you.
GENRE: fantasy > ya fantasy AUDIENCE: upper ya STATUS: drafting PITCH: A retelling of Izanami-no-mikoto meets Axie Oh's The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea. All Junri wants is to fulfil her family’s soul debt and free them of their curse. But when a human girl falls from the sky, she risks the wrath of the goddess to rescue her. Now Junri faces an impossible choice: save family or herself?
This started out as a novella, which you might be able to tell from this post. The format, the plot and most of setting has changed but the roots remain the same. I started this novel version of it late last year.
WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT: a ghibli underworld, with cursed girls, and angry goddesses, platonic soulmates to enemies, cute spirits, found family, horrific flowers that trap souls, a story that will give you a warm hug before beating you senseless, fluffy tragedy (or tragic fluff).
