Presenting our final project to the administration at ASYV. The presentation consisted of information gathered on outcomes, outputs and evidence of the Farm Management project. There were certainly several obstacles to overcome through this 10 week journey but we feel great about the skills we have transferred and the relationships that we’ve made.

Meet Augustin, Farm Manager of ASYV. During my internship here at Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village I’ve had the privilege of working with Augustin to determine current issues related to farm management. From there, Augustin and I have developed a Farm Information System that addresses those concerns while meeting the needs of the village. In the picture above, Augustin and I are extracting important information from previous records through the use of pivot tables.

My weekdays working at Agahozo-Shalom Youth have taught me a great deal about international consulting. However, the weekends in Rwanda have something to offer as well. This past weekend included Akejera National Park. Originally I was disappointed the Zebra wouldn’t turn around for the picture but turns out the “butt shot” looks a little better anyway. Grateful that TCinGC has offered me a combination of career development and achieving personal goals. First African safari - check.

The majority of my time at Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village in Rwamagana, Rwanda is spent working in the administration office. However, hanging out with the students after school is a constant highlight of my trip. This young man is Jures but he goes by “Juice”. Juice is brilliant and has interests that range from modeling to IT. He loves asking me about my project, which is building a farm managing system for the village, and about my life back in America. Improving the village’s information systems will in turn provide a better community for kids like Juice. Understanding that gives even more meaning to the project.

Traveled to Carnegie Mellon University - Africa this week to discuss my project at Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village. Was able to gain some consulting advice from the professors and also had lunch with a group of CMU - Africa students. Looking forward to staying in contact with these brilliant new friends.

Took a trip to the local market today to pick up some groceries for the week. It’s easy to learn a little more each day about life in Rwanda; people are eager to share. Sharing information was a critical first step towards implementing a new farm management database in week 1. The relationships that were made this week will be essential for successful collaboration over the next several months.

Arrived just about a week ago to Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village in Rwamagana Rwanda. Part of my introductory tour took me through the farming sector of the village. The goal is to have a quality database ready for record keeping on farm activities at the end of my 10 weeks. Off to a great start!
