Legend of Female General
review (1 - 36)
Overall, I give 6/10.
Like my previous review before I wished this drama would really show He Yan’s journey how she worked hard, struggled, and built her friendships. That’s what the title made me expect. Instead, it focused more on romance. Romance is fine, but then maybe give it a different title, because “Legend of Female General” made me think it’d be about her story.
Other dramas this year with strong female leads, like Prisoner of Beauty and The Glory, also changed things from the novels, but they still kept it exciting. Sadly, Legend of Female General didn’t really hook me.
By episode 4, I was already skipping scenes, which isn’t a good. Compare that to Coroner’s Diary—that one had me excited from the start.
For romance, they did a good job with the ending but still wish the war part a bit longer instead showing so many kissing scenes after both FL and ML get into relationship.
On the plus side, I’m looking forward to Cheng Lei’s next drama Shadow Love. The teaser looks fun, and since the original novel is short, I don’t think they’ll drag it out too much.

Legend of Female General review episode 5 - 12
The drama is putting more emphasis on the romance than on the military or court politics. In the novel, Xiao Jue only finds out He Yan is a woman after The Flying Slave’s investigation, but in the drama, he notices much earlier. If romance is the main focus, they did a good job with that part (xiao jue in the drama is more soft hearted than the novel).
Still, I wish they had handled it more like Coroner’s Diary. That drama centered on Qin Wan and Yan Chi’s daily investigations, but it never forgot to slowly build their romance at the same time.
After watching Coroner’s Diary, I had high hopes for Legend of Female General, so I was a bit let down that they focused so much on romance instead of showing more of He Yan’s struggles to earn Xiao Jue’s trust while keeping her identity a secret.
On the bright side, both Cheng Lei and Zhou Ye played their roles really well. Honestly, I think this is going to be Cheng Lei’s year with How Dare You, Shadow Love, and Mo Li coming up. I’ve read all three novels, and I can’t wait to see the dramas!

Legend of Female General
review ep 1-4
Been waiting for this drama forever! But honestly, I’m a bit let down by how they changed the characters and rushed the plot. I know I shouldn’t compare it to the novel, but I really wish the first 3 episodes had focused more on He Yan with the other recruits and Cheng Lisu. Their friendship is so cute and really important in He Yan’s journey at the garrison.
In the novel, Xiao Jue doesn’t show up much at the start. He mostly works behind the scenes/just inside his room. But it looks like the drama wants to push the He Yan and Xiao Jue romance right from episode 1.
And seriously... they made Xiao Jue her training master? 😭 In the book, He Yan famous among the recruits because of her own hard work and training! 😤
I really want to love this drama as much as I love the novel, especially since Cheng Lei is playing the male lead—he’s such a great actor!
Fingers crossed🤞 the next episodes get better.
