Solas snickers, leaning over to the side.

“Mmmm.”

    He hums, the discarded pile of missives which he had been vaguely attempting to decode haphazardly stacked on top his trunk; a mostly finished bottle of brandy, uncorked and on the ground.

“I could finish the game’s lyrics, if you’d prefer.”

He doesn’t sit, not yet. Best to keep out of reach for now. A hand comes to rest on his hip and he props himself against the support of a tent pole as he surveys the predicament before him.

“And if I do prefer…?”

It’s a test, of course.

“Provided you are sober enough to remember them.”

Solas’ face softens, if only to dull his expression; his ears, twitching.

     “You didn’t,” he responds, “Yet it has been given to you. Whether or not you use the power in your grasp for greater benefit---well.”

He lowered his chin.

     “No one group of elves has ever been able to handle this level of power with any sort of responsibility. Their current fractured state is, in part, due to mismanagement. One hopes that the Anchor will not contribute.”

His ears pull against his head, his tone cooling. 

“I am—concerned.There are spirits pouring through a split being pulled through a split in the Veil and the key to closing it is in your hand. That is an immense amount of power for a single person to have.”

He searches for his words, his shoulders squaring as he pulls his hands behind his back.

“The elves are not known for handling such power with caution. If I seem offended, it is because I am apprehensive that such responsibility will be handled wisely.” 

She bristles, fists balling at her sides, not just on behalf of herself. Her people have hardly ever been granted such power to mishandle. They have scrabbled and toiled for every bit of it they’ve gained, and done what they could with it, and she hardly thinks they’ve ever done any harm for trying.

“You have an awfully negative opinion of elves, for being one yourself.” She lifts her chin, arching an eyebrow. “It’s not like I asked for this responsibility. I don’t even know what this is, but I’ve done the best I can with it. Should I be doing something more than that? Because if so, maybe you should share your thoughts.”

Cullen was as good a strategist as he had ever seen. His dedication to always doing what was right was admirable as well, though it occasionally had the ability to make his ears twitch.

     “Naturally,” Solas replied, “But the waking world is not always the most---forgiving. There is danger, no matter where one might step.”

The ex-Templar’s polite attempt to hide his intent was commendable.

     “The ability to travel through dreams is---difficult, if not dangerous, under even the right circumstances. It is less of a disturbance to the spirits of the Fade if one is in the location itself.”
