Roasted Bone Marrow with Rosemary and Garlic
Tumblr media
Bone marrow is an important supplemental food that's easy to love-if you love fatty, savory treats, that is. And bone marrow is a treat, with its over-the-top richness, meaty flavor and fatty, creamy texture. It's delicious fuel for the body, brimming with vitamins and minerals.
Bone marrow is easy to prepare, too. It needs nothing more than a sprinkle of salt (and maybe some fresh herbs) to reach perfection in the oven.
Roasted marrow is good enough to eat right out of the bone with a spoon, which is how it's usually served. Forget about those fancy marrow spoons; instead, ask your butcher for marrow bones that are cut lengthwise (also called “canoe cut”). This cut exposes the marrow and makes it much easier to scoop out. Grass-fed is best, of course, both for flavor and nutrients. Bone marrow can be served with a green salad on the side, to cut the richness, and is also quite tasty poured over roasted vegetables.
Servings: 4
Time in the Kitchen: 30 minutes
Ingredients:
4 marrow bones, cut lengthwise (canoe cut)
1 teaspoon finely chopped fresh rosemary (5 ml)
12 small garlic cloves
Salt
Tumblr media
Instructions:
Recipe Note: Some recipes recommend soaking marrow bones in brine (about 2 quarts cold water and ½ cup kosher salt) overnight before roasting. This cleans the bones, removing some of the blood and making the bones look nicer. However, if you buy high-quality, grass-fed bones, brining doesn't seem to make much of a difference in the flavor or quality of the roasted marrow. Blood spots that come to the surface of the marrow before you cook the bones are perfectly normal, and don't need to be wiped away.
Preheat oven to 425 °F/218 °C.
Place the bones, marrow side up, on a parchment or foil lined baking sheet. Season the marrow generously with salt. Sprinkle rosemary over the marrow.
Tumblr media
Rub any loose papery skin off the cloves of garlic, but don't peel the cloves. Trim off both ends of the cloves of garlic. Rub the cloves with a little bit of oil. Scatter the garlic cloves around the bones.
Roast 25 minutes. The marrow should be very soft and warm all the way through and bubbling a little.
Squeeze the garlic cloves out of their peels. Drop the cloves in with the marrow, and eat with a spoon.
Tumblr media
Bonus Recipe: Bone Marrow “Butter”
A great idea for any extra you have left over-bone marrow “butter. Just let the bones cool in the fridge, then scrape out the marrow and herbs into a bowl. Whip for 2 minutes.
Tumblr media
Bone marrow butter is great on sweet potato toast or roasted/grilled veggies, but use your imagination to enjoy!

Cleaning House (Please Stand By)
Happy Friday, friends! The kitchen nook area got a nice little update this week with a new set of pans and a wall-mounted pot rack.
The last time I posted about this area was around this time of year in 2016. It seldom gets any love because it's the spot right before the sliding glass door (aka, the dumping ground for all of the tools and supplies while I work on the shed and deck outside).
It looks even better though when you compare it to how it looked the first year I moved in!
Funny how we just need the proper motivation to get organized sometimes, right? For me, the trigger to clean up this area was that white cookware set. I found them at TJMaxx and was immediately drawn to the white enamel and faux-wood handles. K and I discovered the first pair of pans while trying to kill a little time before meeting my parents for dinner one night, and we went on a hunt to Homegoods and another TJMaxx for the rest.
UDH tip: I assume it's common knowledge, but just in case you didn't know: if you find something at TJMaxx or Homegoods or Marshalls but it doesn't have a full set, you can often find matching items at the other nearby stores. You have to take a little bit of a gamble on it, but I was pretty confident we would find more pans (given how many duplicates we found of the pans we bought). And if you're interested on these kids of shopping tips, I have more here and here.
Anyway, the purchase of the pans made me finally buy the pot racks, and not having any room in my kitchen cabinets for either finally made me go through my pots and pans and get rid of some old ones. After K moved in this year, there's been a lot of re-organizing to either get rid of duplicates, make room for his collections (he's got a few, so it's a challenge!), or just buy new sets of things to better match our combined tastes.
And speaking of reorganizing, the “please stand by” is in regard to me moving servers for this site. That isn't really going to change how things look, but rather just trying to get a lot of technical stuff dealt with behind-the-scenes so I can then make more improvements. So, if you see something funky over the next couple days/weeks, there's a good chance I'm already aware of it and trying to fix it, but still feel free to let me know. Whenever migrating, there are things that sometimes disappear (like even this post, so I have held off on my next deck update until I know for SURE I won't have to do that work twice)!
I hope you guys have a wonderful weekend!

Soundtrack Review: Star Trek Discovery Chapter 2
Star Trek Discovery Chapter 2 Soundtrack Review: This is a review of the television score Star Trek Discovery Chapter 2 by Jeff Russo.
Buy the score here (if available)
At a glance:
Geek Score: 79.1 Total Minutes Of Excellence: 7.1 Album Excellence: 13%
How are the scores calculated and what does it mean?
Star Trek: Discovery is a 2018 American television science fiction series created by Bryan Fuller & Alex Kurtzman ans starring Sonequa Martin-Green, Doug Jones & Shazad Latif. This sci-fi series follows the voyages of Starfleet on their quest to explore new planets and new life forms. Set 10 years before the events of "Star Trek: The Original Series," the show sees the Klingons waging war against the United Federation of Planets, with starship Discovery being the most important weapon on the Federation's side. Science Specialist Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) must learn that to truly understand all things alien, first she must understand herself. The score is composed by Jeff Russo.
As a big Star Trek fan, having seen all the previous TV shows and movies, naturally I came into this show with some expectations. I had no idea what I was in for. On the one hand, it doesn't really feel like Star Trek. There's another show created by Seth MacFarlane called The Orville which is way more Star Trek than this show is. So that was disappointing to me, but it's still a show in the Star Trek universe with well known villains and characters, plus it's actually terrific science fiction. It started off a bit bumpy, but once it found it's footing I was hooked and I'm super excited for season 2. The first season of this show was divided into two chapters, and this score represents chapter 2 which is episode 10 to 15. I didn't quite warm up to Russo's score to the first 9 episodes though, but this might be different as they are exploring a very different side of the universe.
The score opens with 'Burnham Take Over' and whether you like it or not, the feeling is certainly what you would expect from chapter 2 which was far more darker than the previous episodes. It's not bad, a bit of military action, but I'm still not quite feeling it just yet. Don't get me wrong, the previous Star Trek shows also had it's share of music I didn't care for, but there was a feeling wasn't there? And that's the key. This show isn't the Star Trek you knew, and it probably never will be. So the most fair thing you can do is judge the music without tying it to the Star Trek universe. Even so, the music doesn't make me feel a lot. An important cue like 'The Lorca I Knew' for example sounds more like a traditional thriller piece instead of the emotional release it should have been.
Maybe I'm being to harsh or too critical, but I just expected a lot more. There's lots of potential here, but I am just not feeling it and that's a big problem for me. When I saw the show, the music is fine, it works. It stays in the background and makes the show more exciting, but as a Star Trek fan, I desire more. Is that wrong? What do you think of the score?

Guitar stand that's affordable and easy to hack
For a Father's Day gift, a friend wanted to give her husband a guitar stand without spending hundreds of dollars. This took 2 hours to design and build. It cost only the price of the IVAR shelving unit. I used scrap wood for the braces. The wood used in the IVAR unit is soft and weak once cut into and compromised. It needed to be reinforced with braces. I made some out of scrap wood, but you could use metal braces from a store.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
IKEA item used:
IVAR Shelving Unit
IVAR Shelves
Materials and tools:
Jigsaw
Compass (for drawing circle)
Random orbital sander
Measuring tape
Drill and bits
How to hack a guitar stand from the IVAR unit
1. Measure and mark the cut-outs for the guitar neck. Mine are 3″ wide and 10″ deep, with a half circle in the middle of the shelf. They are spaced evenly across length of the top shelf. I cut out four. You could make less or more, depending on your guitar needs.
2. Using a jigsaw, make your cuts.
3. Make and attach braces for the top of the top shelf. These should stretch from the back of the shelf to close to the front of the shelf. These braces are added to keep the top shelf of the guitar stand strong. They are completely necessary. Do not skip this step.
Tumblr media
4. Make and add cleats on the second shelf from the top. These are 1 1/2″ wide and 16″ long. They are placed 5″ apart. The cleats are added to keep the guitars upright.
Tumblr media
5. Sand all until desired smoothness. I used a random orbital with 220 grit, and sanded the edges of the wood by hand.
6. For this shelf, the amps go on the bottom since they are heaviest. The pedals go on the next shelf up from the bottom. The guitars go above that. The IVAR shelving unit comes with 5 shelves, but we only used 4.

Tumblr media
You don't always need to store your guitars in a guitar stand, you can display them in style. This one is hacked from an old IKEA EXPEDIT 5×5 shelving unit. Only the bottom row is retained and the top section given a new wooden panel. The same can be done with the KALLAX shelving unit. See the tutorial.
Tumblr media
Paolo found a very easy way to hang up his guitar, rockstar style. Check it out.
Tumblr media
Zach crafted a guitar out of an IKEA butcher block. The block sat in his stockpile for 2 years till he came across a quote from Brad Paisley. He said “a Tele(caster) is nothing more than a cutting board, a baseball bat and strings”. And the next Ikea Z guitar made the cut. See more.

First Summer Garden Harvest | Sneak Peek of Pub Shed
Earlier this year, I grew a small variety of vegetable garden seedlings in my master bedroom. After they were ready to transplant, I built an L-shaped garden bed and began my first-ever vegetable garden. I was pretty darn excited. And now, I'm sharing some of the first glimpses of a happy, healthy garden!
Tumblr media
It's tomatoes. It's basically a lot, lot of tomatoes.
Tumblr media
The other veggies are growing in (a few peppers, some spices, cucumbers, and more), and they will be ready to harvest within the next week or so. But the first to ripen by a long shot are the two varieties of tomatoes. We've already had so many, we've given some to neighbors, friends, and my parents.
Tumblr media
We pick them at the first sign of red, and allow them to ripen a little more on the kitchen windowsill.
Tumblr media
If I remember correctly (K ordered the seeds and he's the one who actually deserves most of the gardening maintenance credit!), we planted both grape tomatoes and 'Fourth of July' hybrids. I'm personally thrilled that we're seeing such success with the garden. Perhaps it's the only thing about all of this rain I can be happy with; it has interrupted nearly every other outdoor project as of late, but the garden did just fine all by itself!
Tumblr media
Pests: You'll probably notice that we don't have a cage around our garden. Yet, the squirrels and other pests haven't yet been much of an issue. This is one of the more frequent questions I've gotten regarding the new garden, so I figured I'd share my overall thoughts on what we might be doing right (I wouldn't really be able to point to anything we're doing as a deliberate pest-preventative move, but I'm thinking it's a combination of several things that just happen to be working out for us):
Stella (the long-haired dachshund) loves to chase and dig for all manner of small animals if they come within the fence line. I'm thinking that she's a big factor in why our yard has been less appealing to these animals who might otherwise come for our food.
It's possible that the scent of her and Charlie's urine in the yard is a warning. (I'm only thinking this because I've heard “predator pee” is something some gardeners use, such as wolf urine, along their property lines.)
Both K and I are in the yard almost daily to work on the shed, deck, and other yard-related projects. So, we are there each day to also pull off the ripe tomatoes, correct vines that are trying to reach to the ground, remove any dropped fruits to the compost pile, etc.
I've been seeing a lot of the ladybugs that I added last year
For slugs and other so, K has been using a spray of some kind (I'll have to double check with him on what it is, but our neighbors didn't have much success with most of their garden this  year despite a similar setup, so this seems to have made a difference in our results versus theirs).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I tried my first tomatoes from the garden just a few days ago, and they are SO good! For simple posterity's sake, I uploaded the video clip of me trying them (after a day of working on the shed, so I look like a stinky mess). I don't have any good recipes to share with them yet, but they are perfect in a tortilla with scrambled eggs in the morning.
I think the peppers will be next, but the cucumbers are quickly coming in, too!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you have a garden this year, have you harvested anything yet? I'm tempted to DIY my own little harvesting basket soon; carrying it all in one of our shirts at night is easy, but also kind of gross with how sweaty we are with the build projects.
Tumblr media
Speaking of, here's a quick glimpse of the new pub shed! Not complete yet of course, but I'll have more of that for you later this summer. I feel like I've been working on this thing forever. But after getting the paper on the roof, it feels like it's finally drawing to a close. From all the things I've been learning, all the second-guessing, all the problem-solving… that is going to be a LONG series to cover, so be prepared for a number of posts in that series once the deck series is finished!

Toddler sized bunk bed with slide and den
Using the IKEA KURA reversible bed as the base, I made a toddler sized bunk bed with slide and den. It cost me approximately £210 including screws. And the whole project took about 24 hours, spread over 3 days.
IKEA items used:
IKEA KURA bed– £130
IKEA TROFAST storage system – £40
IKEA HJALPA clothes rail – £3
Other items used:
A piece of unwanted white cupboard board which was in a pile free outside IKEA
A piece of left over kitchen kickboard I had in the shed (used for stair treads)
2 pieces of smooth 2 x 1 from my shed for the sides of the slide
2 wooden knobs for the top of the slide £3
Duck tape for decoration £8
Material for curtains £9
Wooden train track £10
Instructions for toddler sized bunk bed with slide and den
1. First I made up the KURA bed as a high sleeper.
2. I measured my toddlers existing cot bed mattress, marked up the KURA bed and cut it to cot bed size so my existing mattress would fit in it. (It was too big for the room leaving it as a full sized single bed as I wanted to add the slide at the side but it can be left bigger)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
3. I assembled the IKEA TROFAST storage system, placed it at the bottom of the bed and marked out where I needed to cut the hole in the bed to get to the slide.
4. I marked up how wide I wanted the stairs and where I wanted to put them on the bed.
5. I took the sides off the bed and cut the openings for the stairs and slide. (Used the left over pieces of wood that were cut off when I reduced the bed size to make the openings stable).
6. I made up the stairs with hand rail using the left over wood from bed reduction and a piece of left over kitchen kickboard I had in the shed as stair treads.
Tumblr media
7. I secured the stairs to the bed frame.
8. I used a piece of white cupboard board (was possibly the side of a white shelving unit) which was in a pile of free wood outside IKEA as a slide and attached 2 pieces of 2 x 1 to the sides as a lip. Cut it to size and attached it to the TROFAST storage system using more left over wood and 2 wooden knobs for the top. (I took the bottom off the TROFAST storage system to make it almost close to the height of the bed.)
9. I attached the clothes rail, made curtains for the den and added left over board to block the den up next to the stairs leaving a little window.
10. I decorated the sides of the bed with coloured duck tape and screwed on some wooden train track to the top of the bed
The result – my son loves his toddler sized bunk bed with slide and den!
