Buttercup was definitely the Puff that pushed the rest of them to demand cash compensation for saving the city of Townsville over and over again. Yes, crime-fighting is the best thing; something they were literally created for (it seems), but it’s not all that they are. With everything they’ve put their bodies through to save the city and its incompetent mayor, the Powerpuff Girls deserve to get paid. They deserve to afford to live on their own outside of staying with the Professor. They are grown-ups now.

Now that there is a fee for their services, the Mayor is more hesitant to call on them for the more stupid problems (which is probably for the best because if Buttercup has to find his dumb hat one more time, she was going to shove it down his throat). Their payment is based on the amount of damage caused, so they don’t take home as much, but they are still getting enough money to get by on their own.
