You are loved, by all standard definitions of the word.
You are cared for, by the people around you. They tell you you're great, they tell you they're glad you exist, they tell you you're valuable and priceless and the world is a better place because you're here. They tell you that you do things in a way others cannot, they tell you how amazing you are.
You have had an ordinary childhood. Things didn't go too wrong; you had friends, though few, but you made good memories. You grew, you played, you laughed, you cried. An ordinary childhood, like every other kid your age. Some things did hurt you, some people did leave you, but all of that was so long ago and the memories are blurry now; surely, they don't hurt you anymore.
The people around you, they love you.
And yet - you hate yourself.
Everything about yourself is awful, like a monster but not even a normal monster; a crippled, twisted, ugly monster incapable of even functioning the way it should. Everything is a task, until you cry and claw your way through it to an extent where you can see nothing but faults in it - about how you've messed it up and how much you suck. You see those stares, and in some cases, no stares, and you wonder if you're really so bad. You spend nights curled up in bed, hugging your knees, wondering why you are the way you are, why you can't just square your shoulders, hold your head proud, and live. But the shame has been so strong since that very normal childhood, that not even your friends' compliments and reassurances are any source of comfort.
You know what you're good at, but you can never bask in the pride. You know what your strengths are, but you feel too weak to show them. You know you are valuable, just a bit, but you can't see an inch of it, and you want to withdraw and crawl into your shell until your soul turns invisible.
You are subpar, too incapable, not good enough, never good enough, the world will be a better place without you, your friends will be happier without you, and there they are, waving their hands at you and calling you over with big smiles and genuine love, but they can't love you, they don't love you, why would they? There's not one good reason they should love you - or so you can't help but believe.
You are not worthless, you know this, but there's a void in your heart that won't let you believe.
Where does this ugliness in your soul come from? Why won't it leave you alone?
Why the fuck won't it leave you alone?
Perhaps this is how Armin felt before he was brought back to life by the people who loved him.
Pairing: Levi/Hange
Show: Attack on Titan
Rating: Teen and Up
Summary:
Levi stared ahead, watching the opposite platform as the passing carriages shuttered the view, condensing the waiting crowd into nothing but a blur of lines and colours. It was dizzying, but Levi didn't have the energy to look away.
His train was now thirty three minutes behind schedule.
Levi was hot and tired and annoyed, and getting hotter and more tired and more annoyed by the second. He had already been dreading the overnight journey after a long and unusually insufferable day at work, and it was made infinitely worse by the overcrowding and the continued delays.
“We are sorry to inform you that the 22:40 LNER service to Aberdeen is delayed by appropriately fifty minutes. This is due to an incident on the line between Newcastle and Berwick-upon-Tweed.”
Levi ran a hand over his face and groaned. All he wanted to do was get on the damn train. If he was lucky—which, given the days events so far, seemed unlikely—he might even find a seat and take a nap.
He was fantasising about this very prospect when Hange, before Levi knew her as Hange, made her entrance.

This is a gift fic I wrote back in February for @giuliadrawsstuff - you can read it on AO3 here! Dive on in if you're in the mood for a silly fun AU Levihan chance meeting :)
Had a dream this morning that Archive of our Own had a Random button which would simply take you to a random fanfic, like Wikipedia has. (AO3 does not appear to really have this, I checked and couldn't find one, but I kinda wish they did.) Someone had started a game where whatever fic you got, that was your new fandom, which is very fun! I would love this meme in real life.
The problem came in where so many people used the button that it broke and just started sending everyone to Stealing Harry, and like...I have fond memories of Stealing Harry but it's not my best work and nobody should be assigned to be a Harry Potter fan in this day and age.
So I decide to go off and find Astolat and demand she fix this but when I finally did (there was a whole quest) she turned to me like the baddie in a horror flick and said, "But that's the most random story there is" in a dark voice and I was terrified and woke up.
In the cold light of day I know there are more random stories by me on the archive, let alone by others, but I'm not going to try to get back there to argue my case. Pretty sure whatever I spoke to was actually the demon specifically assigned to plague fandom and not Astolat at all.
I'd say "get thee behind me, demon" but I know just how many porny fics on AO3 begin with that premise. (I've written some.) Begone foul spirit, and take your Satanic Panic with you!
