Seeking advice from you, a great artist! But seriously I was wondering what your process was with things like referencing and colours, I can't do it by sight and constantly have to refer back to a portrait! How do you manage to do it so all the shading and highlights go in the right places without a constant reference? (your art is amazing thanks for listening)
using a reference isn’t a bad thing and not being able to light your paintings/drawings correctly without one isn’t a necessarily bad move either. references are a good tool to have if you want to keep improving. i should be drawing with one when it comes to colors even though i’m not, which is why i always paint the same way: the bland kind. i rarely give my portraits a definite light source and even though it doesn’t bother me, it’s not how you should learn things
i don’t know your exact skill level but if you’re still too confused about what goes where, the uh… map? i keep in mind when i paint and lay down the first colors is something like this:
i had to decipher it on my own when i first started because i could never find definite info on the topic so i hope it helps a bit? it’s basically a cheat code, no matter the face structure, these areas won’t change fundamentally (they WILL change, they always do, just not shockingly)
after that point, everything else is just keeping a mental library? i still look up how light works in specific ways if i can’t work it out on my own. even if you do it time after time after time, it isn’t bad. it’s the wise choice. just make sure you actually remember what you’re doing and don’t just copy what you see/make the movements absent-mindedly because you won’t ever learn anything. it’s frustrating now but the more you paint, the more you’ll remember what you’ve done in previous pieces and the less references you’ll need for the simpler stuff. best of luck<3

HEY ARTISTS!
Do you design a lot of characters living in not-modern eras and you’re tired of combing through google for the perfect outfit references? Well I got good news for you kiddo, this website has you covered! Originally @modmad made a post about it, but her link stopped working and I managed to fix it, so here’s a new post. Basically, this is a costume rental website for plays and stage shows and what not, they have outfits for several different decades from medieval to the 1980s. LOOK AT THIS SELECTION:
OPEN ANY CATEGORY AND OH LORDY–
There’s a lot of really specific stuff in here, I design a lot of 1930s characters for my ask blog and with more chapters on the way for the game it belongs to I’m gonna be designing more, and this website is going to be an invaluable reference. I hope this can be useful to my other fellow artists as well! :)

+Digital Rorschach inkblot tutorial: I really enjoy making digital inkblots (this is what happens when you’re a psych major and an artist I guess, haha), so here’s my process :)
Extra tip: blending tools also help control areas for a softer watery look.
There are also a lot of brushes that simulate watercolor or ink textures that can be used for this. Just remember it’s important to know how the medium you’re mimicking *works* and duplicate it through process and technique, rather than relying entirely on a texture brush (using it incorrectly can just make everything look like an unhelpful blob).

apparently ppl don’t know about waifu2x??? despite its… concerning name it’s literally the most convenient website i’ve ever come across as an artist
it allows you to resize artwork without it becoming pixellated. this is a MASSIVE help if you, for example, make lineart too small or something. it works best with things that 1. have no textures 2. have smooth lines 3. have cel shading, but it still works really damn well for things that don’t fit that profile
here’s an example:
normal size
2x in paint
2x in waifu2x
so like, there’s that. go wild

THANK YOU!! <3 I’m always very bad in explaining what I’m doing. Cause there is just a lot of trying and painting over it and mashing and mixing colors until I feel it’s good. So I tried to show you. I hope this helps!

Tuesday Tips — Stylized Fur
I was extremely excited when I learned this for the first time from my wonderful friend, Tony Siruno, who I personally think is one of the best character designer and he is a super nice guy too. THANK YOU Tony for being super awesome!!!!
It blew my mind on how simple it is. Indicating things is really hard and this is a really neat tricks to simplify things. This is of course not the only way of drawing fur, this is simply one way do it.
1. Silhouette! Use them sparingly. There’s no need to draw the fur all over. I mostly draw them when there’s a change of direction; such as elbow, knees, shoulders, top of the head… etc. Be playful with it too. Sometimes it’s nice to change directions of the hair drawing itself. It can indicate gravity.
2. Interior indication. Be playful with it. it tells a lot on what type of hair it is. ie. short, long, coarse, … etc. You can even vary the length or clump things together. What ever it is, do NOT leave the interior blank. It will look weird.
3. Combine both. Have fun and go crazy with it.
I attached my North West line up (which I post a few weeks back) as an example on how I apply it to my work at Dreamworks.
XO, Griz
