listen to me, really. I am holding your two hands tenderly in mine. being part of a privileged group and benefitting from systemic exploitation without meaning to is not the same thing as being an inherently trash person who makes the world worse by living it in. that's not what that means. I'm telling you this for two reasons, 1) so you can chill the fuck out and be at peace with yourself without feeling like you're draining the universe of value, and 2) so you don't go onto oppressed people's posts about systemic privilege and exploitation and react like they've just told you that you, personally, should not exist because you're a man who lives within the vicinity of a supermarket that sells chiquita bananas. you're just gonna have to put some trust into your own brain and hold on to both the ideas that you're on one of the dominant sides of a set of global scales of injustice and that you don't have to shrivel out of existence about it. it can be difficult to reconcile those ideas at first, but it's completely possible and worth doing. if you don't, then you start constructing a worldview where you believe that either you have a civic duty to self destruct or you start vehemently denying that these systems of oppression exist, both of which are Bad and Not Good. peace and love x

BLACK HISTORY SPOTLIGHT: BUSSA AND THE BUSSA REBELLION

Origins

Bussa was born on the West Coast of Africa in the late 18th century. It is believed by some historians that he was of Nigerian descent. He was likely a free man who was captured by African slave merchants and sold to the British. The British would later transport him to the British colony of Barbados, where slavery had been legal since 1661.

Plantation Life

There is not much information on Bussa prior to the rebellion,  but some records show that a man named Bussa, who was a slave,  worked as a head officer among the slaves on Bayley's Plantation; in the Saint Phillip Parish at the approximate time the rebellion would of taken place.  His position as a head slave officer would have given Bussa more freedom than the average slave. The Black people in bondage under his supervision would have likely viewed him as somewhat of a leader. Therefore, convincing them to rebel against their brutal British white taskmasters would have been less of a daunting task for him.

Rebellion Leader

The revolt occurred at about the same time the British Parliament was attempting to pass legislation that would somewhat improve the grinding and harsh lives of the slaves on their Caribbean colonies and would have required that the colonial slaves be registered.

Some historians believe that many enslaved Black people falsely believed that the legislation was for Black emancipation, which it wasn't.  That being said, when the legislation was rejected in November of 1815, Bussa and his fellow enslaved collaborators soon began preparation for a slave uprising to free themselves from the bondage and subjugation of the British.

By February of 1816, Bussa was one of the few African slave drivers on the British colony. Bussa used his position and the little bit of freedom and mobility it gave him to meet with other enslaved Black people on the various plantations to organize their revolution. The freedom fighters decided that April 14th, on Easter Sunday, the anniversary of the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who be the birth of their revolution for Black freedom.

On Tuesday,  the 16th of April, Bussa and a few other slaves led a small army, which consisted of about 400 freedom fighters, of both men and women. Ultimately,  Bussa would be killed in battle, and his band of revolutionaries would be subdued by the overwhelming British colonial militia  forces with their superior firepower.  Even though the rebellion failed, it is credited as being extremely influential in the history of Barbados and its ultimate eradication of slavery on the small British colony.

Legacy

In 1985, Karl Broodhagen created the Bussa Emancipation statue. It was unveiled in Haggatt Hall in  St. Michael's  Parish, 164 years after the death of Bussa and his rebellion.

In 1998, the parliament of Barbados named Bussa as one of the Ten National Heroes of Barbados.

Regulus hated his freckles in the summer because his parents saw them as imperfections, so that’s all he saw them as

James absolutely adored them and would not let go of Regulus until he had kissed them all

whatever you do don’t think about James suddenly becoming heartbreakingly sad for seemingly no reason, so much so that Remus, Sirius, and Peter all check in on him individually, and he tells them he’s fine because he is! Because he has no reason not to be fine, right? RIGHT ??? Nothing has happened and no one has died and he’s still James and all of the important people in his life are right there. Even Effie and Monty are just a letter away. He has no reason to be so depressed, to feel like there’s this gaping hole in his chest. So he gaslights himself into believing he’s fine, nothing’s wrong, it’ll pass, and he’ll be himself again.

and definitely DEFINITELY don’t think about a boy with black curls watching James fake smiles and hide winces and stare dejectedly into his breakfast, knowing he must’ve done the spell wrong, regretting that he can’t do anything to help him.

James who always jumps too fast into relationships who has never cared for a slow burn who just wants to feel and feel and feel and is always looking for the high of the chase. James who meets Regulus and wants to take his time, who doesn't care about going slow because he's savoring every little step they take, basking on the first time Regulus calls him "mine", giddy over the first time they confess it's more than just a crush. James who now daydreams about everything he knows they'll get to have, who saves songs and pictures to show Regulus because they remind him of them. James who is in no rush because he knows he'll have Regulus for a long long time

Headcannon that Monty loved regulus more and effie lived Sirius more. James was just in the middle.

i feel like this has so much oitential for angst, where james grew up loved by both his parents because he had some traits from them both and never understood the mommy's/daddy's kid stereotype because he loved them both equally.

and then come sirius and regulus and he watches the way montys eyes light up talking to regulus about potions, how they can talk for hours, how they always disappear together for ages.

he watches effie and sirius bond over the randomist things and watching them do make-up together, doing everything together, making hot chocolate together, gossiping together and james is just there.

he isnt the favroite, he isnt the one thats be willingly sought out, hes just loved.

he knows he shoukdnt but he misses the way his parents would have unlimited time for him, how he could randomly think if smthng and just come downstairs and tell them, unlike now when he comes, Monty is doing expiraments with regulus and sirius and effie are engaged in conversation whikst playing chess.

he consideres himself the worst person for being jealous of them, but he knows that they deserve it more than him.

when sirius and james accidentally find out about regulus’ crush on james, sirius makes the mistake of assuming him and james are on the same page and tells him he trusts him to do the right thing (ie., let regulus down easy) james misinterprets this as sirius trusting him to never do anything that could hurt regulus and starts planning the wedding

James Potter would intentionally not go to bed/go to bed at 4am just in case one of his friends texted him in the middle of the night. Just in case, if they needed help, because it had happened one time too much for his liking that someone texted him feeling like shit in the middle of the night and he hadn't helped them because he'd been asleep.
