I got my minecradt working. There was a second problem that seemed sooo utterly disconnected from the first that I was starting to think I would never get both of them fixed And well the second problem had a super straightforward solution so I did that and all of a sudden my first problem was solved. I'm not convinced that it wasn't coincidental but maybe it really was dns misconfiguration all the way down
