ADDITIVE TECHNIQUES: (DRAWING WITH PERMANENT MARKERS, POSCA PENS, INK)
Tumblr media
1. i cut my film into 2 second intervals this time to work a bit faster
2. i coloured some completely with marker to later use as “mood masks” over my footage, and created blobby shapes i’ll use to later distort/ change images
Tumblr media
colour will be a very important component to this work because it’s an effective emotive tool plus also just fun to work with
(i’ll probably have to colour correct a fair bit in adobe later depending on the digital quality, but also because i want to colours to be very vibrant and the markers alone most likely won’t be enough for this)

BLEACHING TECHNIQUE WITH WINDEX AND WASHING POWDER
using the website linked as a reference i’ll be bleaching one roll of my found footage with a mixture of windex, store brand diluted bleach and washing powder with the aim of creating a bubbly washed out effect.
following the steps i cut and laid out my film in plastic takeaway tubs in the windex/ washing powder for 2 hrs at a time before pouring the boiled diluted bleach over them, then washing with coke water and air drying.

SUBTRACTIVE TECHNIQUES (BLEACH AND ETCHING)
using my roll of black film i used a few subtractive techniques to create my “mask” layers. (these will work as an overlay to the fount footage rolls, colours i will edit later in adobe to colour correct/ enhance)
1. i cut the sections in 1 second intervals so i can guess the timing of the strips
2. using a dropper bottle i created the bendy shapes/ dots then filled some in with permanent marker in green/ pink/ blue
Tumblr media
3. then with a sanding block and a scalpel i etched into the remainder of my film to create grain/ scratches and words i’ll use throughout
Tumblr media
the sanding block scratched film can be used for intro/ intervals of the film and the other etching (aka words etc) will aid in linking my concept of memory distortion to the visuals

CONCEPT WORK
i want to make a film about the deception/ distortion of memory looking back
this is something i’m particularly interested in having experienced abuse/ living with cptsd there are parts of my life i can’t remember/ often remember bodily rather than with my mind (my head often feels like scrambled eggs tbh)
abstract will work well for this as i’m hoping to make something that is messy/ distorts and falls away at the edges
for a long time i just assumed i had a particularly bad memory, (well turns out i do but there’s a distinct reason for that) and it’s often difficult to explain to people who haven’t experienced it themselves
working titles “scrambled” or “falling away like wet cake” kind of encompass the visual experience in trying to create
image references form my progress:

ARTIST REFERENCE: BARBARA HAMMER
i love how hammer’s films often stem from stray thoughts and are abstract/ fragmented. she created a great space in experimental film for distinctly queer experiences in her career spanning over 5 decades (notably made her film “dyketactics” 1974 on 8mm that’s widely considered one of the first lesbian films!! aka an icon)
(link above is a website including her works/ written material about her that i have gone through will have in mind when making my work)
two of her films, “Evidentiary Bodies” (2018 9:30 min) and “lesbian whale” (2015, 6:35 min) are particularly interesting to me as they chronicle very personal experiences in abstract form also using drawings/ light and movement to add to the pieces.

ARTIST REFERENCE: JENNIFER REEVES
i love jennifer reeves work for many reasons but one that is relevant to what i’d like to achieve in my work for this course is how she is able to create what is referenced in the article above as a “difficult perception adventure” in her works. she very effectively captures feelings/ reactions/ moments in her works through abstract means ultimately giving her audience an unconventional experience of perception.
examples from her works below:
“landfill” 2011

“chronic” 1996 (a confrontation of trauma, disorder, tragedy and loss)

“Girls Daydream About Hollywood” 1992
