Its not something hes often told, but when he is its easy to scoff and dismiss the person (internally usually- its good to let them have to guess if he reciprocates) because whatever version of himself they ‘love’ isnt him.
Its only when jon says it that it well and truly catches him off guard and leaves him unable to deal with it. Jon knows him better than anyone in his life ever has. Not as well as Jonah knows himself but its close enough. The thought of Jon legitimately loving him throws so much off his truths into question
I think Jonah gets viscerally uncomfortable when people tell him they love him

I think Jonah gets viscerally uncomfortable when people tell him they love him
#mine#it must be a lie because they dont truly know him#and love is fake (in his opinion)#it is only a tool to manipulate with#he cant conceive of true genuine affection for himself#not because of low self esteem but because of the practical truth of who he is#he knows hes quote unquote evil#jonah magnus#jonah#elias

I love that Jon as a protagonist is just. Not a good person. He's arrogant and selfish and rude! He's abusive to an employee of his!
He's an unlikeable asshole!
And yet.
We do like him. You really learn what makes him tick and why he is the way he is.
Jon is forced to see the consequences of how he treats people and he doesn't like it! he wants to be better ! and yet the circumstances hes put in (and that he put himself in) make it harder and harder to avoid hurting others
I love how as Jon's capacity to harm others increases his *desire* to decreases. (This is of course why smiting people in s5 was bad.)

(trying to give relationship advice) from a narrative perspective i think both of you dying together would be the most emotionally satisfying resolution but i’m guessing that’s not what you want to hear

martin, for all his faults, at least knows when he's being self-destructive. he is acutely aware, even. jon, on the other hand, will look directly at daisy and say "it's all very rational, my back up plan for if I couldn't get you out of the coffin was that it would just kill me and if that didn't happen I was hoping that you'd just kill me."

everyone has already said this about mag 81 but jon really just spends twenty minutes absolutely laying into himself. yeah I was an egotistical child who was difficult to care for and the adults around me were generally justified in their open resentment and violence towards me because I was so annoying and then my trauma made me super self-centered and uncompassionate towards other people's suffering and no I will not be extending even half as much emotional grace towards myself as I do to the adult who routinely beat me up until I was eight <- jesus christ man.
