Also revisiting the Group of Seven, a group of painters in the early 20th century whose work I have admired since my highschool days, and whose style has influenced my own. But of course, they are a group of white guys. Sigh. One of the Canadian painters I admire most from that movement/period of time, wasn't part of their group. Emily Carr, not to her detriment at all.
Then there is the "Indian Group of Seven" also Canadian artists, also all men. native-art-in-canada/indiangroupofseven.html

It’s not all ceramics at 1+1=1 2021 Holiday Show! Far from it. We have woodworking, encaustics, art jewelry, oils and watercolors, linocuts monoprints and etchings and glass among other brilliant artworks!
Just now sorting through and organizing some gorgeous small paintings by Brad DeFrees and Lauren Zalewski. Peeks of Susan Mattson’s corked bottles and goblets in the upper left corner. Everything is super affordable and of course, one of a kind. Support local artists, small businesses – not big corporations this holiday season. Thank you! https://www.1plus1is1.com

We introduced ceramic artist and gallery owner Wendy Anderson (co owner of Persimmon Gallery in Big Fork) to our Helena community during our summer exhibit HOME. Her art was so popular we invited her back for the 2021Holiday Show. Wow-- we're glad she accepted! Wendy's functional porcelain pottery is *gorgeous*, beautifully crafted and totally charming. Some of the best we've had here at 1+1=1. Check it out in person at the exhibit opening Nov. 20th, or on our website. Thanks to @sageoatstradingpost for carrying native made handmade soaps. I needed something to use for scale, on Wendy's soap dishes. These both smell lovely. . . . #wendyandersonstudio #montanaartist #1plus1is1gallery #helenamontana #artgallery #2021HolidayShow #giftideas #ceramicarts #functionalpottery #handmadepottery (at 1+1=1 Gallery) https://www.instagram.com/p/CVvnuAgPMuV/?utm_medium=tumblr

Little Callan and his mom, Emilie, at 1+1=1 today. Callan is THE most observant three year old I know. Very focused whenever comes into the gallery. He knows what he wants to look at (and I mean REALLY look at) and what he likes. An art collector n the making. Today his choice was "Sunrise," by Ciana Williams, the green/red striped painting left of Callan. Mom says it will go "wherever Callan decides to hang it."

Hoping to add some tags to this magical alley during our art studio classes next week. Last week, my tween students did a photography project about point of view. Will post some of their photos when they turn them in. Check out a few close-ups of the graffiti there:

Kids drawings of their fellow students faces. After they learned that the eyes on a human face aren't actually way up on the forehead, lol

More later when I get my ooomph back. Many of my followers don’t know about the accident I had in September 2019, when I broke a piece of patella off of my knee. After surgery and lots of complications, and almost a year of rehab, I am still unable to work a full day teaching and managing our art gallery without excruciating pain every evening. Yet. Guiding these youngsters in creative thinking, and stretching their minds and hearts to make art, makes my heart SING, and it’s worth the discomfort. They thrive. I thrive. Our community is better for their sparks and engagement in the arts. I’ll be posting more about the individual youth this weekend. For now, good night. Imara is such a free spirit, observant, independent, wise, and so creative. There is no telling her what to do. And. I love having her in my Thursday art studio! She decided that one of her two under-painting/over-painting projects was going to be about dolphins at sunset and the other would be “abstract” (whatever that means.) lol. Imara was one of our community Curator’s a couple of years ago, at age 6 or 7. Now, not only is she an art appreciator... she is also a budding headstrong artist (are there any artists who aren’t headstrong?) The dolphins are a work in progress. Imara’s abstract is complete. Gorgeous work, my young friend. #1plus1is1gallery #teachingkidsart #learningfromkids (at 1+1=1 Gallery) https://www.instagram.com/p/CD23ZvvFk5N/?igshid=177uk53p6rqqt

We had a lovely family visit 1+1=1 today. A mom with her toddler in a backpack and 5-year old budding art appreciator, Isabella. Turns out Isabella’s mom has figured out how to visit art galleries with two young kiddos in tow: keep one close in a backpack and give the other one a sketchbook! Isabella told Susan and I that she was drawing the “cats” without looking at her paper. Yep. Blind drawing. I think her sketch captures the essence of Susan’s style! #kidsinartgalleries #raisingartappreciators #yeskidsbelonginartgalleries! #1plus1is1gallery #awesomeparenting (at 1+1=1 Gallery) https://www.instagram.com/p/CD21MhtF6EU/?igshid=1b32yp8dnjtm

Genevieve aka Gigi aka G, poses with a page torn from her sketchbook. She has titled it and priced it (just for fun) and - can you tell? - is very proud of her ability and her interests. I have to tell you, Gigi knows more about dragons than most adults, especially me. She is passionate about reading and learning and, well, dragons. I’m sure she is/will be passionate about many things and ideas as she gets older. I love having G as an art student. Just. Wow. So today, I asked my art students not to have a preconceived idea of what they wanted to paint. I get it. I get that’s an almost impossible ask when you are 7 or 8 or 9. When you have mythical creatures roaming around the folds of your brain every day every hour... so I’m impressed that, although G wanted to paint a dragon, she stood back and painted these exquisite abstract (believe me abstract art is NOT easy) paintings that really NEED to be made into awesome fabric patterns. G, you rocked the patterns today! . . #1plus1is1gallery #teachingkidsart #surfacedesigner #patterninpainting #creativity #ilovemyjob❤️ (at 1+1=1 Gallery) https://www.instagram.com/p/CD0F1htln2E/?igshid=e82lv2z7accn

Ok. Sometimes I mess up. Really??Yep. I took pics and a video of my art student, Eli, today. But I realized I didn’t actually press the “go” button. I pressed the stop button and actually videotaped the in betweenness. Is that even a word? Anyway, no pic of Eli, who is super cute. But I do have pics of his paintings from today’s art studio. Eli, 7 years old, has a secret superpower. He is different. He is creative. He thinks like an artist. He told me today that he was having fun. That’s what I always hope for. You go, Eli! . . #1plus1is1gallery #teachingkidsart #ilovemyjob (at 1+1=1 Gallery) https://www.instagram.com/p/CD0BG51lzfo/?igshid=12su0pcjqv3w0
