Visual Journal 3: Style Memoir
Tumblr media
I have always viewed myself as someone who went against the normal style of society. In my rebellion against the normal style of society, I conformed with another set of people which was quite ironic, since I did not want to have similar styles with others. I have associated my style with what some may call the fake “emo” and “weaboo” crowd because their appearance seems so awesome to me. The fake “emo” crowd are so awesome looking due to how they often look like vampires. Furthermore, the “weaboo” crowd have these super fake anime styles that's super aggressive and silly at times. I also found myself quickly attracted to the stylistic choices of the girls of these specific crowd's, which help contribute in the deciding factor of my own personal style.
Rhetorically, I want to appeal to certain “emo” or “weaboo” girls I find quite cute or interesting. I often do not associate my style with boy's because I am not very interested in them, though we have very semiotic styles and appearances. In my stylistic choice of appearance, I often wear anime shirts or band shirts. In school I often wear the same clothing everyday with few changes because I enjoy wearing black jeans and a burgundy sweater. Do not get me wrong I am quite clean, I change everything else, except the jeans, shoes and burgundy sweater. I take great consideration in my cleanliness and smell factor often asking girls specifically to measure my cleanliness to theirs, since guys often do not care...
In my physical appearance from the photo I have included in this journal entry, I am wearing a dark flannel and blue jeans contrary to my stylistic choice I have listed prior. I often change my stylistic appearance when I am in church or need to look presentable, in this specific image I was in church camp in the forest. In my photograph, we can clearly see a giant teddy bear which I have deemed my love for the weekend since we spent time together. In the image we can see my feet and the giant teddy bears touching to rhetorically exclaim our fondness and love. I am not condoning the idea of bestiality as some people might ponder upon.
Often in my physical appearance I have been told, that it is quite easy to make fun of me since my stylistic choices are often quite different from others by whom I would consider friends or well-known acquaintances. I do not let these negative comments hinder my stylistic choices, but rather embrace them because I find it charming. Overall, I enjoy being silly and love the cute silly enjoyments of life

In the history of the United States during the 20th century, their has been many forms of exclusionary tactics, enforced to those who are considered minorities in America. Due to permissible laws regulated by politicians supported by the American people, their has been many forms of exclusions against those who are ethnic in origins in the United States. Even today those who are ethnic are often seen with disdain, due to their heritage while others even go further by making claims against their God given facial characteristics. Some of these ethnic people such as the Chinese, Mexican's as well as the Japanese, have been alienated and discriminated against by law, simply based on their heritage. During the 20th century the Chinese Exclusion Act excluded and expelled the Chinese from the United States. Following these negative behaviors against the Chinese was the Mexican repatriation, which forcibly deported birthright Mexican citizens of the United States into Mexico. Furthermore, after Mexican repatriation was the Internment of Japanese Americans during World War Two, alienating most Japanese Americans from regular American society. All of these American exclusionary tactics targeted towards those who are ethnic have negatively affected the ethos of the American society. Rather than a nation of great freedom, we are a country of ethnic exclusions and walls.
In my examination of the exclusionary practices that are currently occurring today, the most notable situation has to be the border wall that is effecting our lives as Americans. In my artistic interpretation of social justice, I have created an image of a Chinese man during the 20th century using traditional methods, a two dimensional digital image of Japanese travel before planes existed and the examples of border walls in three dimensional modeling. I choose these specific designs to incorporate a distinct message in my portrait of 20th century exclusionary acts in the United States. The Chinese man laid down on the bottom right of the portrait with the traditional Chinese Queue hair style, symbolizes the great diversity in American culture, the Chinese cleansing and finally the sole reason why some immigrants arrive to the United States, the pursuit of the American Dream. On the top right is an American interpretation of an image derived from Japanese style. In the work of a boat traveling by sea, I wanted to exemplify Japanese effects in the arts, the great endeavors people would do in search for hope and possible happiness. Lastly, in the samples of border walls, I wanted to relate contemporary Mexican repelling tactic's with Mexican repatriation.
All in All, these exclusionary tactics against the Chinese, Mexicans, Japanese were created to preserve ethnic exclusivity while incarcerating and expelling ethnic people from the United States. Instead of reflecting from past American politicians failure, today we are building walls against Mexican's and preventing ethnic people from immigrating here legally. The Visa Lottery also known as the Green Card Lottery the broken immigration system implemented in the United States is one of the few legal ways to immigrate into American society. As the Visa Lottery name imply's, it is a lottery with impossible odds. Another way immigrants can legally immigrate to the United States is by marriage, like most countries in the world. These impossible odds against immigrants is a testament of the amount of will power they have, to risk everything in hope for a better life.

Two important elements of rhetorical writing are the writer and the context. In writing, the writer is the instigator of the message that is being conveyed to the audience. Through the writer we are introduced to the topic of their personal agenda which can be affected by many different factors. The central context in writing is also highly influenced by the writer's attitude, position and epistemology. In writing, the context is the overarching idea the writer wants us to analyze and examine which can be affected by our current situations. The context also clarifies certain ideas, while excluding and suggesting certain implications of the topic.
In the visual arts, the writer and context can be applied to art through the vision being displayed by the artist. The writer dictates what we the audience see through the context of the art piece. For example, in my artistic interpretation of abortion, I examine the social controversy of abortion through the feet of the unborn. In the United States, there are people who claim to be for the pro life movement, while others claim the right to abort their unplanned children. In the plan parenthood website, it is stated that a rough majority of people, twenty five percent of women will get an abortion due to a number of different circumstances. Other sources have claimed that these many different circumstances to abort children are due to not having the money, partner or simply bad timing. The pro life movement website explain's how during conception, life begins and so abortion is the act of killing another human being no matter how small.
Whether you believe abortion is a social injustice or not, it is a on going circumstantial decision some of us, may have to face sooner or later. The decision to keep the unborn or to kill the yet to be born is a very tough decision that will impact our lives. In my decision to portray the feet of the fetus's inside a women's womb, I examine Aristotle's appeal of pathos, by appealing to my audiences, self conscious emotions of the life growing inside of them.
Going back to the begging question of how rhetorical elements can be applied to visual art, the writer and the context play a pivotal role when it comes to the portrayal of art. As a writer of visual arts, I chose to establish a context that is for the pro life movement, rather than the right to abort.
