just like a casual psa: as a filipino born and raised in the philippines, nothing pisses me off more than my ethnicity being collectively called “filipinx” like. we are not latinxs whose language is gendered or whose language history has led to the use of “latinxs”. filipino is a gender neutral language. we don’t use “she” or “he” for pronouns, we simply use “siya”. we don’t use the words “wife” or “husband”, we simply use “asawa”. FILIPINO IS A GENDER NEUTRAL LANGUAGE. stop applying western standards to make up some new collective term for filipinos. our identity as a people is fucked enough as it is with colonial mentality. nobody from the philippines actually uses “filipinx” in reference to themselves. using “-x” as a suffix in an attempt to be gender neutral while referring to my ethnicity as a whole does more harm than good bc it makes it seem like my own language is not enough when it, in fact, is. why make up a new term under the guise of gender neutrality when the language itself is already gender neutral to begin with? it doesn’t make sense.
if you wanna identify as “filipinx” bc of diasporia, that’s cool. that’s for YOU. but all i ask is to not use it to collectively refer to my ethnicity as a whole. it feeds into the colonial mentality that is so ingrained in our culture, where many filipinos conform to western standards in everything, from language to fashion to beauty, and it needs to end. we don’t need westerners making it harder for us to embrace ourselves. it’s hard enough as it is.
back in 2015, tumblr made me start using “filipinx” to refer to my people under the guise of gender neutrality. this made me forget this small but significant part of my own culture. it made me forget my own language. thank god there were people who made me stop and think and get out of the western mentality that is so deeply ingrained in me by society. what i don’t understand is how this trend is still being used to this day.
just. please. it’s 2017. call us who we are: filipino.

Adéle Haenel (pencil). This is based on a picture but I changed her pose a bit so now she's sitting on a sofa. *cue 'Pony' by Ginuwine* POW cha mm cha 😏
.
Binase ko itong larawang ito sa isang letrato pero binago ko ng konti ang porma niya kaya mukha siyang nakaupo sa sopa.

Hundreds of innocent people are dying and being raped every day, stop doing whatever you are doing right now and inform yourself. Talk with others about it and share.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Imagine your sister/mother/aunt and possibly even you was being raped by multiple adult men, DISGUSTING
Tumblr media
And it goes on every single fucking day. This sounds like pure hell. People are hiding everywhere they can, probably not getting out and getting enough food. There is so much shit wrong with that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And lastly, it doesn’t matter how much influence you have on social media or what your status is as long as you post just one single thing about what is happening right now. You are helping. Look, I for example have 20 followers, but do I care? No, maybe only 5 of my followers will see this, but that’s better than 0.
And if you live in one of those countries mentioned above, PLEASE donate if you are able to.

I don’t think this is said enough in our educated, yet jaded and satirical generation. It pays to process or understand particular comments in the context of that person. Doing so might get through the true problem in their mindsets and leave something that might even resonate with them for a very long time. Thank you for saying this.
Effectiveness
I don’t write much on here. But every once in a while I have a desire to collect my thoughts.
Over the past couple weeks the idea of how to be effective in dealing with oppression has come up in a couple different ways in my life, through a couple different partners. It also comes up a lot online, on Facebook I see a lot of anger out there, often justified anger, but anger that to me feels directed in suboptimal ways.
I think it’s natural to feel a sense of powerlessness in this world. To take myself as an example, I care a lot about species extinction. The ongoing mass extinction caused by global climate change and other environmental disasters is a huge problem, and one that is largely outside of my control. Realistically, how many bottles I recycle or eating less meat isn’t going to be outcome determinative on this one. A lot of problems are like this, where the individual action of one person is insufficient to change a system that’s causing problems.
So what’s left for a person to do?
One answer might be nothing. Accept that you can’t change the world, and just try to enjoy yourself while it crumbles. But while I think this is a logically coherent answer, I think for a lot of people it’s infeasible. It’s impossible to just turn off the part of yourself that cares about these things.
The alternative I feel like is working towards building movements. Interacting with people who interact with people, and so on, that create change on a larger scale.
And for me, it seems like the first place to work on movement building is oneself. A lot of people come into activism with problems. Because many of us have suffered, we have empathy for those who suffer, and that can be a great strength. But the pain we’ve gone through can also be a weakness. Pain can leave people irritable, easily triggered by people that disagree with them, and prone to black and white thinking. I’ve dealt with all of these problems myself.
It can also be easy to develop a negatively biased world view, because often the world is pretty terrible. That makes it all the more important to not see it as worse than it really is.
The self in relation to others though is a particularly important nexus of change though, because people place more weight on actions that cause them to feel negative emotions than positive ones. If I snap at a man and call him as an oppressor, or dismiss his ideas by telling him to “check his privilege” that’s damage that’s not easily undone. Fairly or not, he will often judge me for that one moment of weakness and judge the issue I’m talking about similarly. He won’t necessarily understand that comes from a place of pain from repeated abuse from a subset of men.
So I feel like the importance of building love, tolerance, and understanding, not just for other oppressed members, but also for people who may not immediately understand our cause is undervalued.
After the self, building relationships seems next most important. Building strong bonds that help insulate ourselves from individual stressors, triggers etc. and build our ability to effectively share ideas, and help others build themselves up and their capacity to influence others in a positive way.
It may sound really sappy, but I think building love is the ultimate way to build a movement, to change the world, and it’s something that is so fundamental that it’s often not talked about or thought about as much as it should be.
