Incorporating Stamp Research
I believe there is the option of incorporating some of the postage stamp research into my essay as stamps are very similar to banknotes as they not only both showcase national identity through illustration but they also travel all around the world and are made from paper.

From Stamps to Banknotes:
I have decided to focus my essay entirely on banknotes instead of stamps. As a result of my research, which naturally lead me to this decision, I find myself discussing banknotes more than stamps in the essay so far. I also believe that there'll be an opportunity for more analysation as banknotes are a larger medium than stamps and coins, and designers are able to incorporate colours and more detail into the illustrations. ided to focus my essay entirely on banknotes instead of stamps. I have also decided to focus my research into the iconography of banknotes in just the last two-hundred years so I am not overwhelmed with sources.

By asking the public their opinion on the value for stamps, it creates an atmosphere of inclusivity and solidifies the idea of the nation.

The Stamp as a symbol of trust.
The stamp on the corner of a letter doesn’t just mean you’ve paid for postage it is like a symbol of trust between the sender, recipient and the postal service that they are going to not only deliver the package on time but also with no damage.
‘Royal Mail is required to deliver 93.0% of all First Class retail items (single piece stamp, meter and PPI47 letters and parcels) on the next working day after collection, and 98.5% of all Second Class retail items within three days of collection.’

Nation and the Postal scheme
‘Postal Schemes set out the terms and conditions for postal services for consumers and business customers who use Royal Mail’s services but who do not hold an individual contract with Royal Mail. Customers who use stamps, online postage, or franking meters to pay for Royal Mail services do so under a Postal Scheme rather than a contractual arrangement. Details of the Postal Schemes are available on Royal Mail’s website.
Before making changes to the Schemes, Royal Mail must consult customers and stakeholders, including Ofcom, and the consumer advocacy bodies, for example, Citizens Advice, providing at least one month’s notice in advance of the date on which Royal Mail proposes to implement the change.’

How do they ensure a universal postal service??
The Royal Mail put forward several measures to ensure that postage stamps are accessible to everyone. Here are some of the ways they do this, these focus particularly on price:
CAPS
‘Royal Mail is subject to safeguard caps on the price of Second Class stamps for letters, large letters, and parcels up to 2kg, to ensure that consumers can access an affordable universal postal service.’

Reflective Post.
Writing these posts on this self reflective blog has been really rewarding, I’m glad I have a space to not only reflect, but also to reference in the future when I’d like more information about professional practice in the illustration industry.

Getting Industry Ready and Self Promotion
From the class I have learned that it is important to create something that’s going to stay on the subconscious, ribbons, etc think of it like sending a present. Something physically sent in the post which is lovely to look at is more likely to get opened than an email.
In class we were shown two pieces of packaging for tea bags, one very plain with a white background and standard text, and no imagery, the other with vibrant yellow packaging with illustrations and dynamic fonts. When asked which one you were more likely to purchase, (with both products being priced the same) it was a unanimous vote for the yellow product. We came to the conclusion that most people would not only pick the yellow more interestingly packaged tea bags, because it is more visually exciting, but they would also think that this packaging would contain a higher quality product. I completely agree with the class, I would think if a company put more time and effort into their packaging, most likely they’ve done the same for the actual product inside as well. Using this to compare to us sending out promotional items, it’s clear that we have to have careful consideration when it comes to how it looks
Industry terms
Cold when the client does not know you at all, warm, hot.
Takeaway
Higher quality packaging means that there’s probably higher quality product inside, think about this when you send out your own promotional products.
Get the client to trust you, trust is important.
E.g sweets (trust cause you’re sending food?), zine packages,
Little things, like interestingly coloured string, coloured tissue paper, stickers to seal, think about the details because people notice and appreciate it.

What is Nationalism and National identity?
Definitely an answer I need to have an understanding of. So far with my search online with books, journals, papers etc, it seems that there is no one definition to nationalism and thus the same holds true for the definition of National identity. Quite a few of the authors of these papers agree although there are many definitions, there are often a solid top three or five.
In order to understand the interaction between national identity, nationalism, stamps and money, one must first know the definition of nation.

Britain and their Stamps
This article,
‘Crown, Communication and the Colonial Post: Stamps, the Monarchy and the British Empire’,
was originally posted in The journal of Imperial & Commonwealth History, it discusses the ‘production and use’ of British stamps with British monarchs and imagery relating to the British empire.
This seems like a useful source to use for my essay.

What is Iconography??
A term I came across when researching stamps and Nationalism is ‘iconography’, as its definition was unknown to me I searched it up online,
From Merriam-Webster:
1: ‘the traditional or conventional images or symbols associated with a subject and especially a religious or legendary subject
2: pictorial material relating to or illustrating a subject
3: the imagery or symbolism of a work of art, an artist, or a body of art’
Iconography is definitely going to be a key term for my essay, it has a relation to basically the entirety of the appearance of stamps so is very applicable to the topic.
