i've been looking all over the web and apparently there are no major bionicle/transformers crossover AUs out there, and i just don't know what's gone wrong with our culture that that isn't a thing
#transformers#bionicle#“the GSR crash lands on cybertron” seems like the most obvious setup in the world to me#clearly i have some planning to do

Just finished Orb: On the Movements of the Earth
I can't believe this one nearly slipped past me, what a thought-provoking anime. Thoughts on that last episode below...
I've seen a few people theorizing about what it means to see Rafal here. This is an alternate universe, or an alternate Rafal at least, or it's a new character that's meant to be what Rafal would have / could have become, etc. The overall consensus I'm getting is that he's sort of a counterbalance to the glorification of the pursuit of knowledge that we've been marinating in up til now; sort of like a call for moderation and centrism by example. I don't think I'm there.
My take is that the reason Rafal of episode 25 wears the face of a character that died in episode 3 is because the dead are static. Far from being the peak of enlightenment that he sees himself as and that we're expecting from such an impactful character, this Rafal's philosophy is no more developed than a twelve year old's. Early Rafal was learning, changing, and evolving, right up until the end. This Rafal, on the other hand, has stopped moving. His attempt to justify himself to Albert, and subsequently getting himself caught by the townsfolk, are not the words and actions of some worldly sage whose worldview has been carefully constructed from a wealth of experience and interactions with diverse thinkers. He's a twelve year old that just read Nietzsche for the first time.
Early on in the series, Badeni describes the theory of heliocentrism to Oczy. He describes it like this: the Earth is moving in two ways, it revolves around the sun, and it spins on its axis. I believe this is not just a dry overview of the theory at the center of the plot, but Orb's central thesis. Just like the Earth, we must be in constant motion, changing, evolving. Movement isn't changing your position in space, it's changing your position philosophically. But it's not enough to just revolve around the sun; the Earth revolves around itself, too.
Movement, then, becomes a metaphor for the act of questioning. Questioning authority, assumptions, and common sense are all deeply important, but not sufficient. It is also important to question oneself. This is the contradiction that Orb encourages in us: to move with conviction, doubting all the way.
Bringing it back to Rafal, the Rafal of this final arc has stopped moving. He questions the authority of the church, and in that sense he is still moving. But he does not question himself, not in the slightest. His Earth does not spin.
I think that's all I had to say. Mostly I wanted to push back against the "going too far bad" interpretation. So many characters in this series had radical philosophies that drove them to equally radical action, sometimes for the worse, sometimes for the better. The thought of some folks coming away from all of that with the idea that "actually, radical thought and action are bad, really" is Orb's final message just doesn't sit well with me.
