Socionics: Intuitive Functions (Gulenko’s Descriptions)
Functional State I - Intuition Of Opportunities (Ne)
Tumblr media
In a mental sense, intuition I is the extraction of information from the subconscious. The subconscious pantry of a person’s information is equal in volume to the outside world, therefore intuition of possibilities is the most intellectual of the functions of thinking. In state I, a person falls below the line of consciousness and draws from the depths of his intellect answers to paradoxical questions for which logic is powerless. Technologically intuitive thinking I represents operations with visual images. Vague pictures, extracted from the subconscious, are synthesized into a complex complex, which, condensing, at one moment is illuminated by a bright flash of light - an intuitive guess. In a person who thinks according to the I-method, his eyes freeze at an average level, and the pupils expand. The gaze becomes defocused.
If a person holds state I for a long time, then in society he will take the role of an intellectual leader - a generator of ideas. I-type exhibits increased intellectual activity, strives for new and complex tasks. With great difficulty, the idea generator is given standard, routine operations. He devotes all his strength to getting rid of them, inventing new approaches. A person in state I cares little about people’s opinions on his proposals and projects. Making a discovery, he satisfies his cognitive curiosity.
Psychologically, in state I, a person experiences feelings associated with self-absorption, external detachment with a strong internal concentration. This condition is reminiscent in its psychological effect of a dam break. The first stage of the intuitive process is accompanied by a painful feeling of dissatisfaction: a person does not find a place for himself, bearing an idea. The idea, it would seem, is ripening on its own, but one has to intervene in this slow process so that exactly the images that are needed come out of the subconscious. Then intellectual tension abruptly, abruptly gives way to relief and joy - the idea was finally born into the world.
On the physical level, state I turns you into a person of unusual behavior. The face becomes very expressive: a frozen, defocused look, muscles around the eyes are strained, eyebrows shifted to the bridge of the nose form vertical folds on the forehead. The body freezes in that position in which you have caught an intuitive thought. Movement freezes, statics are established. This continues until the moment of insight, after which statics suddenly gives way to violent emotional dynamics. A strong physical stimulant of state I is the feeling of swimming - immersion in water or zero gravity.
Functional State T - Intuition Of Time (Ni)
Tumblr media
State T at the intellectual level forms the most abstract type of thinking, which reflects the global processes of the external world conditioned by time. The law of entropy - a steady transition from more organized forms of life to more chaotic and simplified - is the basis of T-thinking. Birth, formation, death and new birth in other forms - this is what information occupies the human brain in this state.
If in the I state a person obtains knowledge from within himself, from his subconscious layers of the psyche, then in the T state information comes from outside - from the Cosmos. Thinking by intuition of time occurs in dynamic visual forms. At the same time, the eyes rise and make small fluctuations, as if trying to follow the movement of the image.
The steady state of T in society leads to the consolidation of the informal role of the “reflector”. In this state, a person predicts the entire socio-psychological dynamics of the team - it is a kind of sensitive indicator of changes. It, like a drop of water, reflects all the bad and good that was, is and will be in this group of people. In the T-state of a person, a contradictory combination of the fate of the “prophet” and, at the same time, a sacrifice awaits, which everyone will accuse of common failures.
Psychologically, the T-state is experienced as victimization (sacrifice). This state is most religiously colored, as it is imbued with the desire to liberate itself from everything earthly, carnal, binding spirit. In state T, a person is drawn to a mysterious, otherworldly, transcendental. In its immoderate manifestation, it leads to hallucinations, the emergence of various mystical visions. A person with persistent T-conditions is most prone to hypnosis. Another shade of feelings of intuition of time is subject to fate, lack of free will, life at the behest of higher powers.
One of the most important signs of a T-state is the loss of sensation of your body. In the T-state, a person feels neither pain nor carnal pleasures. The lifelessness of the body is manifested in its fragility, pallor and inner emptiness. The T-state is expressed through postures of humility: lowered shoulders, retracted or, on the contrary, too elongated neck, tilted or raised head, general stooped figure. The movements in this state are uniformly slowed down and smooth. It’s like some kind of waking dream. The eyes in a person in the T-state are very sad, in them like a reflection of a dim mysterious, “moonlight”.

Socionics: Sensory Functions (Gulenko’s Descriptions)
Functional State F - Power Sensor (Se)
Tumblr media
Intellectually, state F means the perception of strength-weakness. Thinking in this state is extremely concrete, grounded, objectified. It is necessarily accompanied by muscle sensations. Thinking technology F is most convenient to compare with “probing” or “weighing” an object. F-thinking is non-verbal - it does not use words. A person who thinks according to power sensory lowers his eyes down to the ground. He kind of listens to his body.
In society, a person with a persistent state of F claims to be the power center of the group. He intervenes in the group’s activities when he feels that he needs to speed up, slow down events or even change their direction. F-type as a conductor controls the group with one movement of the hand, turning his head or changing his body position. But he usually does not seek to stand in front of a group, to formally lead it. Therefore, another name for the F-role in society is an informal or shadow leader.
Psychologically, state F is felt as complete self-confidence. Any doubts, experiences, reflection are incompatible with this condition. The feeling of the owner, wherever the person is. The mood to win at all costs. Strong nervous system and self-control. Rapid mobilization of forces, allowing at any second to inflict or repel a blow. All these are unambiguous psychological signs of condition F.
At the physical level, this condition requires a massive, poured body. There are few movements, but all of them are made firmly, in one jerk, without pauses. Static pose of a man standing firmly with both feet on the ground. The look is sharp, intense, heavy. With this look, they sort of weigh, evaluate the balance of power. Despite being firmly grounded, the axis of rotation seems to pass through the body: state F is very reversible - the body easily rotates in any direction, quickly responding to the situation from the front, back, and side.
Functional State S - Sensory Sensations (Si)
Tumblr media
Intellectual activity in state S is the processing of signals from all the senses. In state S, a person absorbs all the influences from the outside world - sounds, smells, touch, temperature - and compares them with each other in a single sensory complex. The difference from state F is that the emphasis is on the dynamics of sensations - on whether they amplify or weaken, harmoniously combine or act differently. In state S, a man again thinks not with words and not with pictures, but with his whole body.
Stable states of S lead at the social level to an informal role in the team, which is called the closer, or decorator. Such a person manifests himself well when the external environment, perceived through the senses, is in a harmonious state. S-type avoids the activities that accompany discomfort, noise, coercion, prolonged stress. Therefore, the closer is active in an isolated area of society. Although its activity is limited, it is universal and diverse: monotony and repeatability are incompatible with state S.
At the psychological level, state S is experienced as pleasure, enjoyment, satiety, satisfaction of feelings of thirst or hunger. In state S, a person expresses his feelings through specific care, assistance in meeting biological needs. This condition can be compared with the process of capturing an image on a photographic film, drawing a picture on the surface of the paper, recording sound on a magnetic tape, etc. S is the most diagnosing condition: it allows you to determine the localization of pain in the body and their intensity. This condition is characterized by constant cyclic dynamics - filling and emptying of hollow organs and blood vessels with a circulating substrate.
Physically, state S is recognized by a soft and relaxed body, a comfortable posture in which the body area is in maximum contact with the surface of the support. In state S, uniform physiologically determined processes in the body are noticeable - respiration, blood circulation, heat waves. Gestures are mean and accurate, but at the same time smooth, without tension. Facial expressions are associated with a contraction of the taste muscles located around the mouth and nose. Pleasure or displeasure, pleasure or disgust is imprinted on the face.

Socionics: Logical Functions (Gulenko’s Descriptions)
Functional State P - Business Logic (Te)
Tumblr media
The state of business logic in an intellectual sense is prudence, an assessment of benefits, and thinking over appropriate methods of action. Thinking according to the P-pattern proceeds in the form of verbal reasoning according to the “if-then” formula. Long chains of cause-effect are built. The grammar of such speech is rather poor, but P-speech is dynamic, differs in lexical diversity, and conveys the developing processes well.
At the social level, the long-held P state generates an informal role for the group's engine. The fact is that in state P a person cannot sit idle - he is constantly in some kind of beneficial activity. Next to a person in the P-state, it is impossible to rest. With his labor rhythm, he involuntarily includes in the work everyone who communicates with him at close range. For this reason, work collectives nominate such people as official leaders. The second side of the P-role in the team is the formal leader.
Psychologically, the communicative aspect of P gives rise to a state of motor excitement, a thirst for useful activity. In the P state, a person experiences a rise in working capacity, becomes energetic and purposeful. This condition is very energy-consuming, so the person who is in it is very nervous, often unrestrained. Any distraction from work is perceived by him as a useless loss of time, loss.
Physically, P is a fast movement with a uniformly tuned rhythm. Muscle contractions-relaxations are subordinated to one goal, are made in one direction, therefore in this state a person is rather inflexible and non-rotational. Having entered the P-state, a person completely surrenders to him, turns into a kind of productive mechanism. It is difficult to get out of it right away. Having gained inertia, the muscles continue to contract rhythmically, and the limbs move. The more intense the work, the longer it takes to recover.
Functional State L - Structural Logic (Ti)
Tumblr media
On an intellectual level, the L aspect means constructing schemes, structures, classifications. This kind of logic does not pursue the goal of efficiency and profitability, but of the correctness and proportionality of proportions. Thinking in categories L, a person compares one object with another according to one or another criterion and places it in the corresponding cell of the classification table. L-thinking is short, extremely concise formulations and definitions. The law of structural and logical thinking is a minimum of vocabulary (significant words) and a maximum of grammar (service words - prepositions, conjunctions, particles, introductory turns).
A long-held state of L leads to an informal role in the team — a systematizer or an expert. It is expressed in making objective, disinterested judgments on any issues of life. A person in state L is prone to isolation within the group, to action according to the written and unwritten norms and rules existing in its framework. The second side of the L-role is the judge. Such a person is addressed, knowing his maximum lack of involvement, so that he soberly judges one or another controversial case.
Psychologically, a person in the L-state is characterized by composure and indifference. In this state, there are no feelings or subjective preferences. Figuratively, this state can be likened to a block of ice or the geometric regularity of a crystal of a mineral. This is the least psychological state, since there is absolutely no soul, human warmth in it. But, on the other hand, it is the most balanced and stable. This is a state of obedience, diligence and discipline.
At the physical level, a person in state L is characterized by an almost complete absence of manifestations of “life”. Mimicry with its stillness resembles a statue, the body is straight and fixed, eyes are dull and not expressing anything. Body movements are minimized. The rule “one organ - one function” is respected, that is, they only take a hand, walk with their feet, and eat with their mouths. The operations are performed discreetly, with a noticeable fixation of the beginning and end.

Socionics: Ethical Functions (Gulenko’s Descriptions)
Functional State E - Ethics Of Emotions (Fe)
Tumblr media
Being in a state of emotional arousal, a person loses the objective rigor of his judgments and plunges into the stormy element of subjective preferences and feelings. His mind makes very partial assessments, which are just an expression of the value of an object or person for himself. The thought process in this case takes the form of speech, rich in intonations, fast in pace and extensive in verbal content. Thinking proceeds as a dialogue with a real or fictional interlocutor.
A person in state E claims the social role of an emotional “involving”. In the team, he draws attention to the mood of people and actively affects those who deviate from the general level of emotions of the group. The task of an emotional involving person is, depending on the situation, either to cheer everyone up, to amuse or inspire, or to provoke negative emotions, it is unpleasant to hurt, excite. Having completed the task of emotional involvement, the E-type switches to external communication - making contacts in other teams and assessing the state of affairs with them. This side of the informal role of a person in state E is called resource exploration.
Psychologically, state E is expressed as a person’s exciting desire, passion. It can splash out in the form of violent joy or inconsolable grief. In state E, the other person feels like himself. This is the essence of the empathy process, which is so necessary for a practicing psychologist. State E is rational, that is, it is recognized by a person, but it is very difficult to manage. Passion, be it joy or sorrow, is always one-sided: it concentrates all the mental resources of a person on one object and thereby deprives him of the possibility of choice.
The physical signs of a person immersed in state E are well recognizable. These are wide-open, burning eyes, rich facial expressions, quick and expressive gestures, randomly impulsive movements, a change in complexion (redness or blanching). The ability to enter state E is necessary for everyone who works on stage or even speaks to an audience. The emotional expressiveness of the actor or speaker is the main means of influencing the audience.
Functional State R - Ethics Of Relationships (Fi)
Tumblr media
The intellectually communicative aspect of R manifests itself as a veiled, hidden assessment. Arguing in R-form, a person is as if afraid of himself to admit that he prefers one object to another. In this state, a choice is made between two completely equivalent variants from the point of view of logic. There is another R-thinking strategy - a conscious choice of the opposite of what we really would like. Thus, R-judgments are rational, that is, they have their own reason, even if it is hidden, but it is absolutely illogical.
At the social level, a person in state R is able to play the informal role of a harmonizer in a team. His actions are aimed at maintaining a warm and friendly psychological climate, smoothing sharp corners, and reconciling people. The person performing the R-role does not act as a judge or “resolver” of conflicting opposites, but as their conciliator. He can calm people, relieve emotional stress. Personal commitment in this case, of course, does not disappear, but is carefully hidden.
Psychologically, the state of R is experienced as an internal attraction to someone or something, as a deep attachment. Interestingly, this condition is not emotional. There is no expression in it, but there is a long-term dependence of a moral and ethical nature. State R is a guarantee of fidelity in a relationship. It is like a compass needle, which, in any attempt to turn its body, returns to its "native" northern direction. Thanks to R, we perceive people, places and times as ours, relatives or as strangers, alien.
Physically, the state of R is very difficult to identify precisely because in it the true attitude is hidden either by indifference or by the opposite. It can be detected by subtle discrepancies and minor glitches in normal communication. His voice trembled a little, his complexion changed slightly, his eyelids flinched and took their usual position — all these are reliable signals of relations. Indirectly manifested sympathies, antipathies, attraction to a person or pushing away from him, accompanied by a slight internal excitement, physically indicate that you are observing condition R.

Socionics: (+/− Functions)
(source) - Russian translation
"The sign of a function in socioanalysis transmits the following aspects. First, it indicates the quality of the function: "+" a positive assessment of the quality, "−" a negative evaluation. Second, it indicates the scale of function: "+" means details, specifics, "−" means large scale, a general plan, a global consideration. Third, it indicates the distance of the effect of the function: "+" means that the function manifests at a short distance from the reference point, "−" means at a far distance. Fourth, the sign reflects the direction of the function: "+" means addition, acceptance, movement towards oneself, "−" means separation, return, movement away from oneself [1]. The term "aspects", used by V. V. Gulenko here, carries the connotation of "the contextual side of properties of functions."
Quality
+ sign - the "positive", competence in the positive zone of properties and incompetence in the negative zone;
− sign - withdrawal from the "negative", leaving negative properties for positive ones, competence in both positive and negative zones;
Scale
+ sign - locality, the "big plan", concretization, detalization within the sphere of the function;
− sign - globality, "the general plan," universality of the function;
Direction
+ sign - the orientation into the sphere of the responsibility of the function (interest in protection of "own circle");
− sign - the orientation outside of the sphere of responsibility of the function (influence, "pressure" exerted on other "localities");
Distance
+ sign - "close" psychological distance;
− sign - "far" psychological distance.
Basing on the proposed placement of signs of functions, we can decipher the meaning of each of combination. Socionic functions ... carry, in our view, the following semantic content:
+ Fe  - positive emotions, joy, merriment, emotional elation, excitement, a smile, laughter, enthusiasm, optimism, good mood, the experience of happiness;
− Fe  - negative emotions, grief, sorrow, sadness, emotional recession, depression, crying, tears, frustration, pessimism, poor mood, the experience of unhappiness;
+ Fi  - good relations, love, friendship, affection, attraction, warmth in relations, sociability, close psychological distance, goodness, compassion;
− Fi  - poor relations, hatred, animosity, antipathy, repulsion, indifference in relations, alienation, unsociability, remote psychological distance, wickedness, mercilessness;
+ Te  - useful, beneficial, economical, technology, facts, acquisition, stockpiling, purchases, savings, bringing order, practicality;
− Te  - useless, unprofitable, wasteful, utilization, deterioration, exhaustion, costs, expenses, risk-taking, experimentation, sales, trade, action in atmosphere of chaos, ingenuity;
+ Ti  - specificity, itemization, detailed study, thoroughness, accuracy, strictness, place in hierarchy, regulations, instructions, choosing the best option, precision of function, logic of organization, indicators, reporting;
− Ti  - abstractness, generality, universality, system, classification, typology, general regularities, objectivity, truth, justice, comprehensive review, analysis, dissection, the logic of science, criteria;
+ Ne  - prospects, opportunities, positive potential, core meaning, essence, principle, new ideas, advancing hypotheses, theory, insight, interest, originality, unusual, fantastical, hopefulness;
− Ne  - hopelessness, alternatives, negative potential, meaninglessness, absurdity, paradox, the forgotten and the old, insight, mediocrity, commonness, repressed possibilities, reality, disbelief, sensation[hit];
+ Ni  - future, change in the situation over time, prediction, premonition, gradual development, evolution, gradual ascent, the dynamics of change, the flow of time, imagination, harmonious description, subtle step-by-step changes, convergence, confluence;
− Ni  - past, accounting for errors, avoidance of danger, anxiety, a worrying premonition, a warning, the ripening of a crisis, revolution, a leap in time, ability to hedge against troubles, sudden shifts, discordant description, the moment of decisive action, divergence, deviation;
+ Se  - retention of power, insubordination, defense, cover, countermove, counterattack, firmness, defense of one's interests, strong-willed pressure from the bottom upwards, strength, will, possession;
− Se  - capture of power, subjugation, offensive attack, initiative, perseverance, determination, demands, strong-willed pressure from top downwards, the assertion of own interests at the expense of others, overthrowing, appropriating, weakness, passivity;
+ Si  - pleasant sensations, comfort, convenience, harmony, beauty, attraction, leisure, health, relaxation, well-being, pleasure, enjoyment, sensitivity;
− Si  - unpleasant thrill sensations, discomfort, inconvenience, disharmony, ugliness, unattractiveness, work, fatigue, stress, illness, suffering, pain [1].
"The plus (+) sign is usually associated with a trait of sustainability, immobility, while minus (–) sign is associated with a trait of transience, mobility. An example from physics: negatively charged electrons are in motion around the positively charged atomic nucleus. Consequently, the static trait is positive and dynamic trait is negative”
“I will be considering the top ring of model A, irrespective of which sociotype is being considered, as the static one, and the bottom ring – as the dynamic one. The ring of stabilization (top ring) is, therefore, a carrier of positive charge, and the ring of development (lower ring) is thus negatively charged. The ring of stabilization can thus be considered functional, and the ring of development – dysfunctional."
ALPHA: (-)Judging/(+)Perceiving
LII (-Ti/+Ne), ESE (-Fe/+Si), SEI (+Si/-Fe), ILE (+Ne/-Ti)
-Fe = minimization or avoidance of negative emotions, prevention of quarrels, scandals, and other situations causing emotional instability, which is valued as more important than creation of positive emotional effect.
-Ti = global structural logic. Systematic analysis is the instrument that they use in understanding the world. They are primarily interested in the universal laws that govern its workings. To that end, all traditions, conventions and restrictions are discarded. Everything is subjected to analysis, redefinition, analogies. Their main goal that they are pursuing is the creation of a comprehensive, breathtaking, singular picture of the world. The idea of unity, reasonableness and the fairness in all things permeates their vision completely.
+Si = positive feelings of comfort. They cannot effectively realize their potential if their lifestyle is full of hardships. Style of activity is characterized by relaxation, freedom, by conveniences. Relations with the external environment, where their activities unfold, must be friendly and pleasant. Their groups are always comfortable, relaxed as if at home, and never rough or eccentric.
+Ne = promising ideas. In this quadra, which can be attributed the element of air, there are frequent talks about the future, the unexplored and unknown possibilities. They may seem to be incorrigible dreamers. And this is so: they look out further than anyone, beyond the horizon, they put forward "crazy" theories and discuss them with pleasure. Some of these theories, however, are destined to have long lives, so long that they will outlast their creators.
BETA: (+)Judging/(-)Perceiving
LSI (+Ti/-Se), EIE (+Fe/-Ni), IEI (-Ni/+Fe), SLE (-Se/+Ti)
+Fe = maximization of positive emotions. Even small doses are enjoyed. Against the backdrop of the dramatic, turbulent emotions that always accompany this quadra, every small occurrence deserving a positive response is seen as an occasion for joy and uplifts their spirits.
+Ti = organizational logic. They have a developed sense of duty, citizenship, loyalty to the elected project. It is therefore the most disciplined and organized quadra that knows how to quickly rally its forces in the event of imminent danger or emergency situations.
-Se = minimization of weaknesses, i.e. steadfastness in the struggle against deprivation and resistance against the enemy. In this quadra, the force of will is an indispensable condition for effective operation. Persistence, determination, endurance and firmness are always the supreme authority.
-Ni = desire to bypass danger. They aim to avoid previously committed mistakes. In their groups, experience, skill, know-how, sophistication are highly valued. They feel confident in extreme situations.
GAMMA: (-)Judging/(+)Perceiving
ESI (-Fi/+Se), LIE (-Te/+Ni), ILI (+Ni/-Te), SEE (+Se/-Fi)
-Fi = minimization of negative relationships. This element is critical of evil. They desire to get away from bad people and poor relationships, and to protect themselves from enemies and adversaries. They want to minimize negative experiences, because as we know from psychoanalysis, all extruded problems are liable to generate an emotional reaction one way or another, with a physical cost for the purification of the subconscious.
-Te = business logic of risk and entrepreneurship. For them it is characteristic to reject that which is useless, insignificant, mundane. This aspect is valued as more important than accumulation and rational consumption. Gammas successfully operate in environments of economic scarcity, where in order to survive it is necessary to use something that may appear useless at first glace, but which is present in abundance.
+Se = durability and resistance. This quadra is well capable of defending itself and its position. For them power is not easy to acquire, as to do this they must resist the volitional Beta quadra. However, once it is seized, they can hold on to it despite all attempts at restoration. Protectiveness, ability to defend themselves against all force, ability to keep that which was acquired - these are the principles that they respect. This quadra can be called the quadra of criticism and reforms. In contrast to the 'fire' Beta quadra, which is oriented primarily politically, this quadra is oriented more socially.
+Ni = constraining their hot temper, these sociotypes prefer to advance gradually into the future, though they may sharply reject obsolete ideas, criticizing past mistakes. Advancing step by step, they generally believe in the linearity of development, i.e. according to their deep convictions, it is only necessary to remove obstacles, remnants of the past, and immediately this will open endless possibilities for growth. This quadra is not afraid of chaos and upheavals: they know how to conduct their work under conditions of change, risk and confusion.
DELTA: (+)Judging/(-)Perceiving
EII (+Fi/-Ne), LSE (+Te/-Si), SLI (-Si/+Te), IEE (-Ne/+Fi)
+Fi = positive, warm relationships. Psychological factors play a vital role for them. Without recognition of ethical values such as individuality and the uniqueness of others, religion and spirituality, non-interference in others lives, concrete humanism, etc., the stability they strongly desire is hardly possible.
+Te = logic of use and rational management of resources. This is the most cost-conscious quadra that consumes rationally and prefers high-quality long-lasting products. Risk, rushed jobs, economic chaos and manipulation are not characteristic of this quadra. The society of quality consumption should be stable.
-Si = minimization of discomfort. They value good working conditions and are reluctant to change their routines. This element excludes harmful influences from external environment. This quadra cannot work during emergencies. They highly value convenience, comfort at their workplace, and good coordination at work.
-Ne = the unusual, alternative and bizarre. Despite its groundedness, this quadra respects unusual and talented people who offer creative alternative possibilities. The spread of new information is not impeded, no matter how avant-garde it might be. In Delta groups, there occur periodic flashes of sensationalism and spikes of interest centered around original people who put forward alternative ideas of development.

Socionics: Typing Conversation [Dichotomies]
1. Introversion vs. Extroversion
Introverts are influenced by the world. Extroverts influence the world itself.
Extroverts have a lot of focus on “I” and their actions in the world: “I went there, I said that and I did this.”
Introverts have a lot of focus on "THEY” and the world outside of them: “They called me and I went. I was told, and I agreed or did not agree. I was invited, and I came or refused.”
2. Sensation vs. Intuition
Concrete sensation-based thinkers and abstract intuitive idea-based thinkers.
Sensory speaks concisely in great detail about events, expanding on them or recollecting exact moments.
Intuitive speak generally in summaries about events, condensing them or turning them into ideas.
3. Logic vs. Ethic
Ethical animates the inanimate, bringing objects to life: “The movie spoke to me.”
Logical focuses on characteristics, describing qualities of objects: “The movie had good pacing and character development.”
4. Rationality vs. Irrationality
Irrational types find difficulty maintaining consistent attention to their expressed points, thoughts, and ideas. Rational types will necessarily put points and be sure to finish their thoughts, even if a conversation starts to lead away from the initial topic. Irrationals have a much easier time going from one topic or idea to another without the need to finish or revisit previously made points or thoughts.

Why go to a restaurant when you can buy groceries in the store and cook the same for less?”

Note
don't know if this has been done before but how would each of the types react to confronting their core fear? like what would be the strategy that they adopt to either come to terms with their core fear or defeat it so to speak? ++ also when confronted with your core fear, would this be a gateway to disintegration? there seems to be a wealth of ennea info here but none of it addresses the problem eg. what happens when an 8 loses control? a 1 gets corrupted? 9 loses their harmony? etc
thanks for the message, i’ll definitely get into this. i’ve mainly been focused on observation as a utility for self-exploration and understanding of others. i’d actually love to do a post on that because the problem is addressed through recognition of the process, how it manifests and what it looks like. that’s where this wealth of information which doesn’t directly address the problem becomes useful.
there’s different theories for sorting out health states and developing from a ‘sleeping state’ to ‘waking state’ but recognizing characteristics and qualities based on motivation allows for integration. there we go from being trapped by our type to letting go of the limitations set by our influences.
on the flip side, under stress or threat of losing control we disintegrate. this often happens because our coping mechanism is no longer working for a situation and we aren’t properly equipped or cognizant enough to handle it. in the grip of this kind of pressure a type like 9 disintegrates into 6 where they become more repressed; worry and doubt reinforces their indecisive behavior. they may even turn to coping mechanisms like blaming others for their disharmony in order to keep further away from holding themselves accountable for inaction. if we’re in denial after facing our shadow or fear, we attempt to reinforce our defense mechanisms and thus push ourselves further into the convictions of type.
i’ll make a post on this soon regarding levels of development, stress fixations, latent resources, alienation, and integration. really appreciate the idea!

Enneagram: Descriptions [Heart]
Type Two
Focused on goodness and kindness. They can become trapped by compulsive goodness, either by giving too much or by demanding too much of others. One of their talents is an intuitive ability to sense what is needed, and lovingly supply.
Ego fixation: flattery Holy idea: freedom Passion: pride Virtue: humility
2w1: Good Samaritan, Giving Lover, Public Servant Average 2w1 combines oneish judgment with twoish people-pleasing. 2w1′s are tighter and more rigid than 2w3′s, but less exacting than 1w2′s. They regulate their behavior carefully, in order to stay polite and proper. Overall, they want to put on a happy face, but because of repressed anger (from the one-wing) and repressed personal needs (from the two), their happy face is sometimes pinched with tension. They are less interested in appearing sexy and glamorous than 2w3, and they are more interested in becoming indispensible than 1w2.
2w3: Best Friend, Seductive Lover, Energetic Networker Average 2w3 is more outward than 2w1. The ambitious vanity of three combines with two's desire to be loved, and the result is someone who is not afraid to step into the spotlight. 2w3′s usually have a seductive, playful side, unlike the more serious 2w1′s. The three-wing gives them a showy, mainstream kind of appearance-consciousness. The twoish desire to please others is stronger than the threeish desire to be admired, although both desires are present.
Type Three
Focused on appearances and effectiveness. They can become trapped by compulsive deceit, of themselves or others. One of their talents is an intuitive ability to instantly adapt to rapidly shifting situations.
Ego fixation: vanity Holy idea: hope Passion: deceit Virtue: truthfulness
3w2: Affable Go-Getter, Charming Lover, Cooperative Leader Average 3w2 is the prototypical sales personality. The threeish desire to be admired is stronger than the twoish desire to please others, so it is more important to them that they look good than that they make others feel good, although they will do both if they can. Unlike the more withdrawn 3w4, they want to reach the largest possible audience. Threeish, mainstream attractiveness is flavored by twoish seductiveness, rather than fourish uniqueness.
3w4: Independent Professional, Image-conscious Lover, Prestige Elite Average 3w4 wants to be admired for unique presentation, not mass-marketed stereotypes. Unlike the 3w2′s, who want everybody to admire them, 3w4′s are more interested in securing the attention of a select following. The introspection of the four-wing makes them less comfortable than 3w2 in social situations, although the powerful threeish social grace usually hides it. Because threeish vanity is stronger than fourish emotionality, they usually manage to stay cool in times of stress, unlike the more emotionally volatile 4w3′s.
Type Four
Focused on the emotional significance of events. They can become trapped by a sense of the meaninglessness of their own life, and of the world. One of their talents is an intuitive connection to the source of beauty.
Ego fixation: melancholy Holy idea: originality Passion: envy Virtue: equanimity
4w3: Artistic Achiever, Self-conscious Lover, Distinctive Aristocrat Average 4w3 is emotionally spicy. Because of the conflict between the three-wing's desire to be in the spotlight and the four's self-conscious fear of exposure, they may alternate between extremes of extroversion and introversion. Unlike the cooler 3w4′s, 4w3′s may find it difficult (if not impossible) to stay calm when emotions come up. They are more likely to talk about their overwhelming feelings than the much more rational, analytical, withdrawn 4w5′s.
4w5: Dauntless Creator, Moody Lover, Ruthless Truthteller Average 4w5 is emotionally heavy. Powerful, passionate feelings and aesthetic appreciations swell within and then get bottled up inside. 4w5′s generally avoid expressing their feelings because they feel that no one could possibly understand them. Like 4w3, they feel special and different, but 4w5 is more likely to withdraw into sullen silence than to make a big public scene. 4w5 and 5w4 both have strong feelings which they repress, but because their feelings are stronger than their repression, 4w5′s are more aware than 5w4 of their inner emotional state. Consequently, they are more likely to become depressed. There is a kind of delicacy to 4w5 that is not usually present in 4w3.

Enneagram: Descriptions [Head]
Type Five
Focused on the inner workings of things. They can become trapped by a compulsion to figure things out. One of their talents is an intuitive ability to directly perceive the structure of reality.
Ego fixation: stinginess Holy idea: omniscience Passion: avarice Virtue: detachment
5w4: Crisp Eccentric, Quirky Lover, Iconoclastic Commentator Average 5w4 is the prototype personality for research scientists. Analytical and detached from their emotions, but passionate about beauty and truth, they want to find the ultimate, simple explanation for everything. Their intellectual fiveness makes them likely to engage in long, professorial monologues, while their four-wing gives them a shy self-consciousness. Unlike the more depressive 4w5, they are likely to have a generally optimistic view, although they can get depressed if they become overwhelmed by the world's demands. 5w4′s are usually less interested in social interactions than the more other-dependent 5w6.
5w6: Detached Puzzler, Undemonstrative Lover, Trend Analyzer Suspicion combines with analytical detachment in average 5w6. The fiveish desire to know the reasons for everything combines with sixish skepticism to create a dry, sometimes intolerant personality. Because the six-wing wants to be liked, they want to be sociable and have friends. But the interaction of the sixish mistrust and the fiveish analysis makes it difficult for them to get close to very many people. They may have more trouble approaching others than the more sociable 6w5. Unlike 5w4, 5w6 may be more interested in politics than nature, more interested in conspiracy theories than physics theories.
Type Six
Focused on safety and security. They can become trapped by compulsive anxiety, or by compulsive counterphobia. One of their talents is an intuitive ability to sense whether someone is telling the truth.
Ego fixation: cowardice Holy idea: faith Passion: fear Virtue: courage
6w5: Cautious Conserver, Bashful Lover, Community Server In average 6w5, the sixish need to feel safe among friends is colored by a fiveish desire to pick things apart into their components. As a result, 6w5 is more likely than 6w7 to join groups whose memberships are highly homogeneous, and thus easier to understand. Unlike the more analytic 5w6, 6w5 is more interested in being liked than in understanding the situation, although both are important. 6w5 is typically a traditional, conservative person who wants to fit into a safe, trustworthy group.
6w7: Family Appreciator, Grateful Lover, Community Developer When an average 6w7 feels anxious, the reaction is likely to be immediate and colorful. Unlike the more subdued 6w5, 6w7 is likely to react impulsively to stress. Instead of analyzing, 6w7 is more likely to sevenishly jump into action, sometimes in inappropriate ways. However, because the cautious sixness is more powerful than the flamboyant seven-wing, 6w7 usually pulls back from extremes before they become too threatening, unlike the even less predictable 7w6. This inner conflict between flamboyance and caution can produce a person who is emotionally rather volatile, similar in some ways to 4w3.
Type Seven
Focused on having fun. They can become trapped by a compulsion to have intense experiences. One of their talents is an intuitive ability to generate and sustain healthy optimism, in themselves and others.
Ego fixation: planning Holy idea: work Passion: gluttony Virtue: sobriety
7w6: Receptive Enthusiast, Playful Lover, Community Entertainer Many average 7w6′s are natural comedians. The sevenish desire to entertain others is enhanced by the sixish desire to be liked. Driven by sixish anxiety into wild, sevenish schemes, they can at times become panic-stricken if their impulsive plans lead them into difficulty. Sevenish gaiety is more powerful than sixish mistrust, so they might not choose their friends wisely. Unlike the power-oriented 7w8, 7w6 would rather move away from conflict than into it.
7w8: Zesty Pragmatist, Enthusiastic Lover, Strategic Planner Average 7w8′s are often aggressive and flamboyant. Seven's talkativeness and charisma combine with eight's outgoing power to create a personality that may be well-suited for starting big projects, but ill-suited for continuing them. Unlike the gentler 7w6, 7w8′s are not afraid to make themselves unpopular. In fact, sometimes they seem to delight in generating shocked antipathy. 7w8 is not as careless of image as the rougher 8w7. 7w8 usually wants to be fun to look at, sometimes to colorful, elaborate extremes.

Enneagram: Descriptions [Gut]
Type Eight
Focused on who is in charge. They can become trapped by compulsive domination of others. One of their talents is an intuitive sense of strategy and tactics.
Ego fixation: vengeance Holy idea: truth Passion: excess (lust) Virtue: innocence
8w7: Resourceful Realist, Bold Lover, Confident Initiator Here's the roughest, toughest personality in the enneagram. Average 8w7 is full of pushy, powerful energy. The eight's desire to dominate overpowers the seven's desire to entertain, so being in charge is more important than being the life of the party. Eights in general do not bother much with appearances, but 8w7's seven-wing brings in some desire to look good, or at least interesting, unlike 8w9, who is often utterly oblivious to appearance.
8w9: Patient Protector, Mature Lover, Enduring Ruler Most average 8w9′s are socially unpolished and physically powerful. When eightish dominance combines with nineish passivity, but the eight is stronger, the personality is quiet but aggressive, usually slow-moving but capable of sudden violence. 8/9 is more likely to ignore a challenge than 8w7, but also more likely to erupt into overt anger than the more passive 9w8. While 8w9 would prefer to sit back and relax, it is important that the situation be under control first. There is a heavy, slow quality to most 8w9′s.
Type Nine
Focused on maintaining a comfortable, undisturbed life. They can become trapped by compulsive avoidance of upsetting circumstances. One of their talents is an intuitive ability to melt into another person's being.
Ego fixation: indolence Holy idea: love Passion: laziness (sloth) Virtue: action
9w8: Placid Bear, Patient Lover, Calm Pacifier Average 9w8′s are gentle, simple, unsophisticated people. They tend to be a bit impulsive because of their lusty eight-wing, and they have the ability to push hard enough to get their way, but they back down easily in most cases if others resist their impulses. 9w8 is more likely to ignore a challenge than the more power-oriented 8w9. Unlike the more refined 9w1, 9w8 feels rough around the edges. There is often almost a clumsy feel to their childlike ways. They are like puppydogs, eager to be happy and eager to forget unpleasantness.
9w1: Careful Compiler, Wistful Lover, Even-handed Mediator Average 9w1 has a sort of cloudlike softness. The one-wing adds a flavor of intellectuality, but nine is more powerful, so the 9w1's thoughts are not likely to receive much reality-testing. As a result, 9w1 often has a set of beliefs about the world that may seem superstitious or magical to others. For 9w1, this is no problem, because, strange as it may seem, these magical beliefs often seem to actually work for them. Unlike 9w8, 9w1 has a kind of refinement and poise, because of the one-wing's desire to be perfect. But 9w1 is more likely to lie down and take a nap than the more workaholic 1w9.
Type One
Focused on whether things are as they should be. They can become trapped by compulsive judgment and correction, of themselves or of others. One of their talents is an intuitive ability to sense what is true, good, and right.
Ego fixation: resentment Holy idea: perfection Passion: anger Virtue: serenity
1w9: Conscientious Detailer, Contained Lover, Reserved Arbitrator Average 1w9 combines the perfectionism and judgment of type one with the withdrawal-from-stress of nine. Of all the subtypes, 1w9 is the driest. The emotions are generally the least available on the surface. The usual overall feeling is strict, rational, quiet practicality. The nine-wing makes them less likely to voice their critical views, unlike the more outspoken 1w2. 1w9 would rather act oneishly, from principled judgment, than withdraw into uncaring, nineish apathy like the softer 9w1, but both tendencies are present.
1w2: Concerned Citizen, Impassioned Lover, Social Reformer Average 1w2 combines the dry, rational, practical concerns of type one with the wet, other-directedness of two. The emotional repression of one is somewhat balanced by the self-defined goodness and desire-to-please of two. 1w2′s typically care more about appearance than 1w9, and because of their oneish perfectionism they often dress immaculately. The pride from their two-wing makes them more visibly sensitive to criticism than 1w9, although both subtypes are internally very hard on themselves. Unlike 2w1, they would usually rather do the right thing than please someone else, although they want to do both if possible.
