I think its strange I haven't seen more criticism of the Shallan and Kelsier conversation at the end of Wind and Truth. It feels so unnatural and info-dumpy for clues about the future of the cosmere. Felt like an end credit scene from a sony spider man universe movie.
#you can hire out her services to others at a steep price#which will give you income in shadesmar#It was overwhelmed with eye winks to the audience#Is he worried about the audience being unsure if a pregnant Shallan would be able to survive in Shadesmar?#stormlight archive#cosmere#shallan#wind and truth spoilers

*sigh* so I've been seeing some earnest posts that are like actually this character really is someone's tien- no, NO
no light-eyed character in a position of power is anyone's tien because kaladin's statement fundamentally misunderstands why tien died. when kaladin says "the king was Dalinar's tien" he takes "tien" to mean someone who is a liability to the safety and success of those around them and yet is personally important to someone. but this is BULLSHIT. because tien wasn't randomly a liability, he wasn't given training because he was part of a racist SYSTEM that viewed dark-eyed lives as disposable. tien didn't do shit. he died for just existing. elhokar isn't just existing, he abused his power. tien had no power. this issue is SYSTEMIC, and the comparison is BULLSHIT.
I really thought I was over doing any analysis of this line and could just meme about it, but I see takes that drag me right back in, I'm so sorry, I'm sure I'll be back with the silly jokes soon

the awful thing is that gavilar actually is someone's tien. in fact i think he might be the most genuine parallel/contrast to tien in the series: like tien, he's the dead relative of a major character who not only died but more importantly died in front of said relative whilst they were helpless to do anything to stop his death. said relative is, of course, jasnah. jasnah and kaladin have a surprising amount in common; in this case, it's that one of their greatest priorities is protecting their families - often from a distance - internalising this as their responsibility and nobody else's, and this is the one scenario in which their ability to do that betrays them. as a consequence, they'll spend the rest of their lives blaming themselves for a death they hold no responsibility for, a debt that can never be repaid, and idealising said dead relative - unless they can finally accept that it wasn't their fault. the irony, then, is that gavilar and tien are almost exact opposites; tien is an innocent child killed by the callousness of war and oppression (much of it started by gavilar himself!), whereas gavilar is an arrogant idiot struck down for meddling in affairs far beyond his comprehension. but neither of their relatives can see past the fact of their deaths.

Isn't it fucking insane that so many people think that IQs are real. Like people genuinely believe you are born with one set level of intelligence that can be measured on a scale from 1 to ~200. As if intelligence wasn't extremely nuanced and completely subjective. And the fact that the majority of scientists that have advocated for IQ tests in the past have been eugenicists doesn't seem to concern anyone either
