just practiced 45 mins.
15 min falco - dreamland, dash on side plat shield drop waveland practicing like mango was doing in his handwarmers. Ledgedash practice, a little bit of basic late hitting aerial shit.
15 min peach - dreamland vs icies, mostly practicing float cancel fair because it seems like that’s 90% of the matchup. Tried to speedrun killing them both, trying to get the flowchart down of when they hit ground and how they miss tech. It’s like at 0% nana doesn’t usually get knocked down and on the third hit a lot of times she would misstech roll away.
15 min falco - yoshis vs icies. some combo stuff, turnaround shield drop stuff. Some oos upsmash stuff. Some dash dance jc shine stuff. WD oos. Late hitting nair.
Ledge dashes felt really smooth. The key is to relax so you can hit that soft down input.
Good little sesh. Gotta try to get into a rhythm of doing this way more often.

pre tourney practice 8/1/17
just made the realization that I’m getting beaten out in falco laser battles because I’m being too meticulous on getting low lasers out rather than going for speed. Practiced fastest shl for a while just in case I play twisty again. Also warmed up some basic stuff and did some vod review. loved mango’s set vs nintendude, he made the punish game on nana look so fucking clean. Hopefully gonna play well today.

i picked up a peach because I’m sick of ICs. it’s got a lot to learn. working on fundamentals of float cancel aerials and linking them into repeat aerials/dsmash/grab. need to mixup w jab too but not as useful for ics.
for falco I want to practice dash dance into stuff, and I want to practice firebird stalle & -> ledgedash. I die too much during their invincibility it’s stupid. I’m sick of sheiks waiting out my shit and me not being able to do the same.

dash dance on tech chase.
soft bair to hard bair lol.
gotta get dashback lasers crispier.
dair popoff ground in corner, if they fall low you can runoff dair.
runoff stage bair is a thing
dashdance jc shine is still a thing.

it’s not all bad - some moments of praise
I don’t want to give myself a big head, but I cherish every compliment someone gives me. Whether it’s the girl I hooked up with last night saying I have a beautiful smile, or really anything because I’m both vain and very needy when it comes to my own self esteem, I really like to remember everything positive.
Anyway, despite getting obliterated by Kaeon this weekend he said he learned a lot from playing with me, and was happy that we could reconnect and play with each other after developing in such different areas. He said something along the lines of “after months of playing with falcos in my hometown I feel like I’ve learned more from playing with you for one night.” And he fucking destroyed this weekend. Really made me happy to hear.
Then after I beat lozr in that one friendly he happened to be walking by with a beer as I was 0 to deathing Yay’s chiggins mcliggins on fd. He clapped me on the shoulder and said something like “I fucking love the way this guy plays.”
Then Dash was finally on commentary for my set with Hifi and talked to me after the game. I was already shrugging and saying about how I knew I needed to play much better, but he contradicted me, saying that some of my vertical movement was exceptional and he was really impressed and only wanted to see me develop more options horizontally so that I could round out my gameplay. I fucking love that dude, he’s definitely one of the most real people in the community, I think.
Every time someone like JBas or someone says that I play cool as shit even if I don’t always win it feels great. I just need to keep advancing so I can eventually add winning into the mix lmfao. But I Think I’m getting there bit by bit.
Idk fuck you this isn’t exactly constructive but it’s important to my mental state and dedication to the game so if you don’t like this post I hate you hahahah

7/6/17
It’s been a long week of melee. Been practicing hard and had a full weekend of playing at BMR and afterward.
There were a couple things I’ve learned this week. In no particular order I’m just gonna roll with it.
1. I suck at this game while drunk. I shot lasers at a reflector fox and was so mad about it. Don’t ever think you’re so good that you can play inebriated vs someone who isn’t.
2. You’re a lot better than you think you are. That win vs gato was commanding, you’ve come a long way. The ability for you to beat Anyone fucked up is kind of astounding. You’re holding your own in tournaments and are on the comeup don’t forget it.
3. You’ve got even further to go than imagined. The consistent four stocks from Kaeon and Kpan were fucking brutal. Hours of getting rekt. There’s a level of conception I just don’t get yet and it’s kind of rattling me. Dash is once again convinced that I need to develop my ground game, I barely know what that means it has me thrown for a loop. My ground baits are pretty basic, all my emphasis on platform movement has made it very neat looking and sometimes effective, but I know it can be better.
I felt so SLOW against kpan. I’m not sure if it was wholly just better decision making on his end or more awareness of situations or actual quickness but he felt largely more capable than me. It was like playing cam all over again. The few games I took were definitely notable for my ability to execute combos and find gimps, and I was impressed at my ability to circle around with lasers. But ultimately I felt pretty incompetent. He picked apart my bad habits.
Every time I’d roll to center Kpan would get a heavy punish off of it. Every time I tried to recover vs kaeon he had me blocked out with a low rising bair that I couldn’t seem to squeeze under. Every time I tried to recover high against kpan he had me with a back air on the way down. It was brutal.
4. Glad I won against sharkz’ samus and finally got a redemption set vs darius, but monday felt like a total bust. Losing to hifi for the first time felt like shit, I felt like I was sluggish all day, I always feel sluggish after driving to ECG. And losing to chi again was horrible. It’s never that chi plays bad, I just want to fucking kick myself everytime I drop an edgeguard because my brain’s going spastic at all the ways I could do it. Like this time I regular getup’d from ledge on time and tried to charge a downsmash that ended up being a downtilt facing the wrong way. I could’ve fucking slapped the cstick and pulled out an advantage. Then idk it’s like a trigger goes off and chi just regains his footing and sheiks me up I fucking hate it. I was playing so well against the other sheiks at BMR. I annihilated fizz. Why can’t I do that to regular sheiks. Chi’s pretty fucking good I guess.
5. Held my own really well against lower foxes than kaeon. managed to take a game against LOZR with a flippy kick suicide dair that I wasn’t sure would gimp but I’m so glad it did. 1/3 is actually pretty fucking good lol, and he was only 3 beers deep. Took the marbles permanently but this is the only place I’ll ever brag about that. Maybe I can try stealing his edgeguard by doing shine bair. that would look cool as fuck actually. But yeah cohenski and typo and others I was totally holding my own with.
6. I feel unsatisfied just going even with someone now. I want to rail them. I want to beat them until I’m sick of beating them. Until I get that familiar notion that I feel bad for beating them so much. I want to get way better, but I need to do a lot of vod review first. Break down the bits of where people excel and steal them.
7. Playing fucked up is one of my favorite things. Getting drunk and high with colbol and rik and Lance (and twisty lol meh) was fun as fuckkkk. Colbol really knows how to have fun with this game lmao. when they were tripping the next day and colbol pointed out how similar blue bowser and green falco looked it was the funniest shit of the weekend. That or rik saying stupid fucked up shit laying on the floor of the hotel room, I wish I could remember that. He told me to kill my teammate (steven) so that we’d win the game. We stood there just jumping around yoshi’s for like a full two minutes wondering what to do now that we’d won the game. Who was there left to beat? “Fucking shy guys” we said as I jumped up and faired them to death and everyone laughed until they were like crying. Acid is amazing.
8. The falco soul bond is a real thing. When kpan picked up ashleigh’s guitar and played dust in the wind I knew it. When he said he loved my music because it jumped from phantogram to boston I knew it. When me and Lance chilled in the bathroom smoking the roach of the blunt because “momma didn’t raise no quitters” I fucking knew it lmao. Falcos are without a doubt the coolest people.
9. But really I’ve gotta get faster. It can’t just be from grinding. I’ve gotta like try to learn harder somehow. Maybe some of it will just be writing little thoughts I have down here when I’m playing friendlies so I don’t forget so easily. Idk we’ll see.

Just worked on shield drops and wavelands another 24 mins. Theory on platform wavelands - if youre not confident in the change in height, ask for a neutral start for that stage and use the 5s to get adjusted. Def could make a big difference. Practiced on bf and dl. Really wanna get my movements quick on bf. Shield drops im trying to learn the angle rather than use a notch. It's like if you aim a firefox at a hard angle it's not too difficult. If im facing to the right i shield drop leftwards by aiming at his back heel. If im facing to the left i drop leftwards by aiming at his knee. I dont really do right ones well enough to speak of it. Aiming at these angles makes the speed you drop not an issue as long as you hit the angle consistently. The only problem with that is it seems slightly more difficult to get a shine input, you kind of need to finesse downwards between dropping and hitting b or else you get a falling laser instead. Which is great to know for later, but not what i want right now.

Just got a nice 40 mins in. Mostly practicing pivot utilts. Dair into it, laser into it, especially. Tried a few shield drops too but it was like feeling good. Also my ledgedashes have been toooo crispy. Feels good playing on pokemon so much. Getting a much better feel of what kind of moves i can use to cover the various platform widths and the waveland timings. Relating them to other platforms helps make the timing really easy, like on grass stage ground to middle plat is same height as dreamland (high enough that usmash wont hit but uair will) and then the height difference from mid to top is about the same as a yoshis side plat. As far as shield drops go i feel really good about the timing i need to do. It's just really hard to restrict my speed to that in the heat of the moment. Gotta do it until it's muscle memory. It's a fun little practice game to shield drop immediate shine (but not get caught on platform) then waveland back up and see how fast you can do it.

Tried to do the arduino mod on my controller, fucked it up. Had to throw away the controller i learned to play on.
Luckily the spare will just gave me is fucking beautiful. The joystick is wonderful, could’ve been a straight conversion into my old shell.
However, there’s some quirkiness to the L button on his shell. It doesn’t click when it presses in, so it feels squishy when pressing it, like it doesn’t have to depress all the way and so it feels slightly more responsive. Sometimes I push too fast and do empty short hops because my input is coming during jumpsquat, but this is rare. I like it a lot, and it’s fitting to have a black back in mourning of my old controller.
So what I’m practicing today is all sorts of l button stuff. I did a lot of lasers to make sure that it doesn’t do turnarounds when I don’t want them to, but satisfied with that I moved on to just waveshining and wavesurfing for a long time. A tonnn of time like 20 or 30 minutes just to see if it felt right. It really is weird. Also did about 5 or 10 minutes of ledgedashing. I was practicing retreating cam dash dashaway lasers as well for a bit because I wanted to try that mixup sometimes. Tried some wavelanding on platforms, but that turned into me just trying to get used to runoff z-nair fastfall. It’s weird, feels like even when you get the fast fall you kinda float around a lot longer than you do when you dair. I’m sure that’s real because of the downward displacement of dair and the lower hurtbox touching the ground earlier. But I was trying to pay attention to how far nair will touch, I believe it’ll hit someone in the very center of the platform, but not anything past it. I know at the furthest edge you can do sh ff dair, the close tip you can do runoff dair, but not sure what to hit that third quadrant. Nevermind, just played with it for two minutes. More accurately you can attack far outside edge with shff nair/dair/bair. You can attack outside middle with shorthop ff nair if you jump a hair early or you can do sh ff bair. center middle you can hit with sh dair no ff or runoff nair, inside edge you can do shff dair or shff bair. Other than that little test I wrapped up with about 5 minutes of alternating shield drops and hi-mid laser isai drop lasers whenever my shield would get close to breaking. For some reason my leftward shield drop feels realllly easy, so I was practicing some aerials into it. Also feels important to practice this immediate-double-click doublejump dair/nair to techchase on platform as quickly as physically possible. I think it could be super important on dreamland especially hold on... ooooh yeah that’s sick. You can start dair at the peak of that doublejump and you’re close enough that it’s already hitting a standing sheik. So you can fastfall immediately and not worry about hitting too high. Bair barely even has time to come out if you do it and fastfall at the peak. Def super vital to be a little bit quicker.
I still want this to be the quickness year. I’m glad i’m focusing on wavesurfing and movement options, it’s all I’ve been doing in my handwarmers too. Next time I really need to keep doing more rising and falling platform movement, mentally note when and where I can do some tricky shines and still land on platforms like PP does. Dude’s a beast. Also gotta break down Chi’s scrimming with him and see what I can pick up. Probably gonna take notes of it on here tomorrow at work.
Excited for BMR2. As a general tourney thing I had one of my worst and best tournaments this week. Monday I stayed up all night (like 1.5 hrs of sleep, had to wake up early for a scholarship function) watching doctor who and it tottttally impacted my play. I thought I was sandbagging but I was so sleep deprived I didn’t realize how bad I was fucking up too. Got kinda mad at forte for how we placed in doubles, but I did it to myself in singles, too. Double 0-2. Blegh. But then the next day after a full night’s sleep I came in second in a no-pr’d player bracket. Fucking dope. Lost to a marth, he started catching me on recovery tactics I usually fool him with over and over again. Then mixed things up and beat him 3-2 in losers. Then in grand finals lost to a peach 2-3. It was kinda disappointing, a lot of his mixups were catching me off guard, but until the last game I felt like I had his number. I did some amazingly stupid suicide dairs chasing a combo that I thought he’d DI in on even though peach literally never DIs in for it it’s like impossible to get that hard a DI in anyway and I know it, but I just felt hella compelled until game 4. Then game 5 idk I got a huge mental block on pokemon trying to think of ways to approach. Now that I think about it (as I also did yesterday) I realize most of the sets I lose have games dropped on pokemon. It tears me up to not play on my comfort stage of battlefield when it’s a regional so I’m more likely to play people I don’t know, but I want to better familiarize with dreamland and pokemon these two weeks so I’m going to try to focus on them. also as a final note I got some of the dopest fucking combos I’ve ever hit yesterday. Some great little bits of material for the combo vid. Can’t wait until Choi starts work on it.

Yooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
waddup.
So I was on vacation last week and I realized that it was kinda fulfilling to start writing down the shit I was working on in that given session. Maybe see some kind of progression in the long run. Maybe talk about tournaments and shit. Maybe matchups eventually if I ever feel like I’m good enough? Probably write some match analysis too idk. The world’s my oyster, basically. But I’ve written or noted too much stuff that I’ve lost in the past and so I’m gonna start putting it here now.
Just for the record, I’m not good. I may never be good. But I’ll be damned if I’m not gonna try.
