Rest in Peace to the Immortal Hulk Hogan – A Childhood Hero Remembered

This morning, the world of wrestling—and my world—lost a giant. Hulk Hogan, born Terry Gene Bollea, has reportedly passed away, and with him goes a huge piece of my childhood. Despite his recent political stances and the controversies that marked parts of his life, none of that erases the mark he left on my heart or the memories I carry with me.

When I think of Hogan, I don’t just think of the 24-inch pythons, the bandana, or the iconic “Real American” theme song blaring through the speakers—I think of me and my late father, Tyrone Sr., sitting together, watching Hulk overcome the odds on TV. We watched him take on giants—both literally and figuratively—and come out the other side with his hand raised, victorious. It was never just about the match. It was about hope. It was about belief. It was about the power of not giving up when the world wants you to quit.

I was a proud member of Hulkamania. I said my prayers. I took my vitamins. And I believed in myself—because Hogan made me believe that I could.

I’ll never forget how disappointed I was when he turned heel and joined the nWo as Hollywood Hogan. I wrestled with it (pun intended), but I kept watching. Deep down, I hoped the hero would return—and when he did, when Hulk Hogan came back to red and yellow, I cheered like a kid again. Because for me, he was more than just a character on TV—he was a symbol.

One of the biggest inspirations of my youth was an episode of Nickelodeon's Stories on Growing Up that featured Hogan. He opened up about being an overweight kid, struggling with self-image, and how he turned it all around. That story stuck with me. It lit a fire in me. It told me that transformation was possible, that I didn’t have to stay stuck in the same body or the same mindset. That episode planted seeds of confidence in a young kid trying to find his own strength.

Every wrestling game I played—every single one—Hulk Hogan was my go-to. My finisher was his finisher. My taunts were his taunts. I won because he taught me how to fight back, even when I was losing.

And that theme song… “I am a real American…”—that anthem still gives me chills. It made me feel like I could run through walls, lift mountains, conquer dreams. It was more than a song. It was a soundtrack to my childhood courage.

I even loved his movies and cartoons:

They were cheesy, over-the-top, and absolutely perfect for a kid like me.

Today, I say goodbye to a legend, a flawed man who still managed to embody greatness in the eyes of a generation. Rest in peace, Hulk Hogan. Thank you for Hulkamania. Thank you for the lessons, the memories, the power poses, the comebacks, and the courage.

You were the larger-than-life hero I didn’t know I needed, and I’ll carry that spirit with me always.
