Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) !
An on-orbit demonstration of asteroid deflection is a key test that NASA and other agencies wish to perform before any actual need is present.
The DART mission is NASA’s demonstration of kinetic impactor technology, impacting an asteroid to adjust its speed and path. DART will be the first-ever space mission to demonstrate asteroid deflection by kinetic impactor. The spacecraft will launch on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket out of Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.
DART’s target is the binary asteroid system Didymos, which means “twin” in Greek (and explains the word “double” in the mission’s name). Didymos is the ideal candidate for humankind’s first planetary defense experiment, although it is not on a path to collide with Earth and therefore poses no actual threat to the planet.
The system is composed of two asteroids: the larger asteroid Didymos (diameter: 780 meters, 0.48 miles), and the smaller moonlet asteroid, Dimorphos (diameter: 160 meters, 525 feet), which orbits the larger asteroid. The DART spacecraft will impact Dimorphos nearly head-on, shortening the time it takes the small asteroid moonlet to orbit Didymos by several minutes.
Astronomers estimate there are about 1,000 near-Earth asteroids larger than 1 kilometer—big enough to cause a global disaster. About 90 percent of them have been identified. Far less is known about smaller asteroids. All told, about 100 tons of extraterrestrial matter falls onto Earth every day, mostly in the form of harmless dust and an occasional meteorite.
NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) will be the first-ever space mission to demonstrate asteroid deflection by kinetic impactor on a binary asteroid target: the smaller asteroid of Didymos, called Didymos B. Didymos is Greek for “twin.”
DART is directed by NASA and undertaken by a team led by Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory with support from NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, NASA Johnson Space Center, and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The Planetary Defense Coordination Office within NASA’s Science Mission Directorate is the lead for planetary defense activities and is sponsoring this mission.

“Many people think they have understanding. But it doesn’t hold up under testing. Put yourself in all kinds of adverse situations, get yourself talked against , be the butt of ridicule and hate , and watch your reactions. If you are not inwardly disturbed, if you can dismiss all feelings of hurt and injustice and keep only love in your heart, that is real understanding.”

“One, remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet.
Two, never give up work. Work gives you meaning and purpose, and life is empty without it.
Three, if you are lucky enough to find love, remember it is there and don’t throw it away.” - SH

34 years ago, on this day NASA Astronauts performed the first untethered spacewalk. And yesterday Spacex just put a Tesla Roadster in an orbit to Mars. This is truly an exciting time to be alive.
** Just to be really clear, this is not the first time we are launching “automobiles” to space.

HIT REFRESH: The Quest to Rediscover Microsoft’s Soul and Imagine a Better Future for Everyone
Satya Nadella
Microsoft’s CEO tells the inside story of the company’s continuing transformation, while tracing his own journey from a childhood in India to leading some of the most significant changes of the digital era and offering his vision for the coming wave of intelligent technologies.
Hit Refresh is about individual change, the transformation happening inside Microsoft, and the arrival of the most exciting and disruptive wave of technology humankind has experienced – including artificial intelligence, mixed reality, and quantum computing. It examines how people, organisations, and societies can and must transform, how they must ‘hit refresh’ in their persistent quest for new energy, new ideas, and continued relevance and renewal. Yet at its core, it’s about humans and how one of our essential qualities – empathy – will become ever more valuable in a world where technological advancement will alter the status quo as never before.
In addition to his thoughts on these stunning scientific leaps, Satya Nadella discusses his fascinating childhood before immigrating to the U.S. and how he learned to lead along the way. He then shares his meditations as sitting CEO – one who is mostly unknown following the brainy Bill Gates and energetic Steve Ballmer. He explains how the company rediscovered its soul – transforming everything from its culture to its business partnerships to the fiercely competitive landscape of the industry itself. Nadella concludes by introducing an equation to restore digital trust, ethical design principles, and economic growth for everyone.
‘Ideas excite me,’ Nadella explains. ‘Empathy grounds and centres me.’ A series of recommendations presented as algorithms, Hit Refresh is an astute contemplation of what lies ahead from a conscientious, deliberative leader searching for improvement – for himself, for a storied company, and for society.
‘With every new technology, there are challenges. How do we help people whose jobs are replaced by AI agents and robots? Will users trust their AI agent with all their information? If an agent could advise you on your work style, would you want it to? That is what makes books like Hit Refresh so valuable. Satya has charted a course for making the most of the opportunities created by technology while also facing up to the hard questions. And he offers his own fascinating personal story, more literary quotations than you might expect, and even a few lessons from his beloved game of cricket’ Bill Gates

Time-bound! But still want to read this book...
Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert T. Kiyosaki
Key takeaways:
The rich don’t work hard for money, their money works hard for them – you can’t expect to get rich just by holding a job.
Don’t get stuck on the ‘rat race’ – increased income that leads to increased consumption of something that becomes a liability instead of an asset, don’t let money control you.
Keep your job and build your asset column; keep your expenses low, reduce liabilities and buy assets.
Financial education is probably the most important step. Once people become financially educated, they still face some obstacles to become rich. In particular: fear, cynicism, laziness, bad habits, arrogance.
There is always risk, learn to manage it instead of avoiding it.
Master a formula and learn quickly. Master self-discipline.
Be an Indian giver: ask yourself how quickly you get your money back (ROI + intangibles)

DAY 3495
Jalsa, Mumbai                  Oct 19,  2017               Thu 10:36 PM
Diwali .. Deepavali … lights and celebration .. wishes, sweet meats, gifts, acknowledgements, exchange of affection among each other, an embrace, a smile, laughter, a little ‘shagun’ of playing cards, for the festive occasion - an invocation almost to invite the Goddess of Wealth, Lakshmi to your homes, decorated with the bright lights in varied hues, electric now but in the times of ours that simple clay ‘diya’ with the mustard oil, the wick and the joy of preparing for it, from days ahead .. that simple yet gentle ‘pooja’, by sunset, the dressing up of the house for it, the dressing up of new clothes for the family and near and dear, the gifting of charity to those that work with us diligently and with sincerity .. and then the fire crackers, now restricted for the avoidance of noise and air pollution .. in those early days with limited means, the joy of walking out to the nearest wayside ‘kirana’ shop, those impromptu little openings for those immediate but necessary essentials, getting just one, just one little noise making small insignificant looking cracker on a thin stick - for that is all I could afford - and running back to the home to enjoy its burning … and now when the means by the grace of blessings have improved, a barrage of such different kinds of the ‘aatishbaazi’ and the endless time it takes to set them off, some being left over, enough for the coming Diwali ..
But none this year .. a bereavement in the family restricts all .. and there is such this year and so ..
But the prayers and the other formalities shall prevail .. and the visits to other celebrations shall continue, and the love and affection within shall ever remain .. to hope to wish to acknowledge each other and gift them the joys of togetherness and happiness ..
Wish that such days remain for each day and not have to wait in patience for an event to arrive .. wish for brotherly and sisterly ness .. of binding and care among each .. of the understanding that brings humans and all together .. they that breathe and exist and they that have converted to celestial stars ..
And tomorrow shall be another day .. just another day .. the lights shall be put off, the left overs of the crackers shall be cleaned .. the ‘diyas’ burnt out with their oil will lie unattended by the sides of the homes on pathways and select places within .. in the times of old, it was a procedure to get up early and collect all the clay diyas, clean them up, store them for the coming Diwali, and feel a sense of pride and satisfaction for it .. now the electricity shall be given back to where it came from, the diyas shall be given away to the needy, the cleaning up shall be instructed, and the day for work shall be initiated ..
Life is such .. the wait for the celebration .. the effort to be able to enable such effective marking .. that one moment of joy for those times .. the prayer in special .. the burning happiness .. the embrace of friendship .. the laughter and smiles and winnings .. and then ..
Life again as before ..
‘… अनवरत समय की चक्की चलती जाती है  …’  the wheels of time continue unabated
In keeping then for the time and the times, my heart, filled with the joys of celebration, filled with the laughter of life, filled with the blessings of the Almighty .. reach out to you .. each one of you .. to bring you greater happiness .. greater prosperity .. to drive away all evil thought and deed .. to fill your plates with the taste of the beautiful and resplendent achievements .. and to keep you all in the cheer that signifies satisfied celebration ..
May there be such days each day in your DAY’s ..
