Other than being a terrifying scene due to the sheer size of Doflamingo's head, it's also a puzzling scene since Law never gave his true name.

He only revealed he was a 'D' a few minutes before this line and he never mentioned Water. Did he tell Doflamingo his full name at some point off camera or did Doflamingo already know? OR was Law's secret name deemed so unimportant that Doflamingo was given the information for free in the shape of a plot hole? Is this scene in the manga?

No matter what crimes Doflamingo commits or how I feel about Rosinante’s lies and betrayals, Homing is the one person in their family I absolutely detest and can’t forgive.

Not for taking his family out of Mary Geoise (with his sheltered upbringing, he couldn’t have known what would happen, and I’m sure he wanted to bring them to a better environment). But for completely failing to take responsibility for the consequences of his decisions. He never explained to his children why they were leaving or that slavery is bad. His family was in need and in mortal danger, but it was Doffy and Rosi who rummaged through trash for food, getting beaten up in the process. I seriously doubt that Homing stole food or did any “unsavory” things to save his family. Simply being nice doesn’t work.

And then, when Doffy aimed a gun at him (in a misguided, but proactive attempt to solve the problem, to do something, to get them back home), Homing… just accepted it. He essentially committed suicide by his 10-year-old son’s hands. While holding Rosi in his arms. What the hell, man? Even if you feel guilty, don’t end your life by traumatizing your children for life!

One of the reasons I find Doflamingo so fascinating is the feeling of destroyed potential. Like, when I look at him, I can see the ghost of the great and good man he could’ve been: loyal, smart, determined, charismatic, good with children, forgiving mistakes and caring about his family… He has all those qualities, all the potential, but it was completely twisted and warped by his upbringing. At first, unintentionally - via the awful culture of Mary Geoise and the disastrous situation when he was hunted down by the people around him, with his parents unfit to help or deal with the circumstances in any way. And then - deliberately: through Trebol and the gang’s grooming and encouraging of Doflamingo’s worst sides.

Doflamingo is a terrifying villain, but he’s also tragic - because I can almost see the good person he could have been. Not perfect, not a flawless paragon - but a genuinely caring man. A brother who shared food with Rosi, a son who tried to help his mother, a captain who accepted people regardless of their looks, character flaws, or prejudice. And this is what makes him so unnerving, I think: because in him, I can see how anything good or genuine in any of us can be destroyed beyond repair.

I find their whole unmentioned relationship in the series so interesting and would have definitely loved to have had it explored more for both of their characters, even though I'd imagine it's quite dark and complex, there's so many things I want to know, especially at what point did Viola feel close enough to call him "Doffy"?

If there's one thing I'm sure of is that Viola used her Devil fruit to see if there was anything in him that she could change for the better and there wasn't...

Maybe she had a "I can fix him." Phase and realised that this psycho man could not be fixed. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Either way would have absolutely loved to have explored their dynamic... Maybe it will get brought up again? Maybe never. Maybe it's better Doffy stays in Magellan hole and never sees her again or anyone for that matter lol

Doflamingo was the first One Piece character where I really felt "this man is really pushing the limits of what would be allowed in a shounen series sometimes read by people younger than ten".

There's a lot of implied sex and violence about the guy. If you tell me that he's not turned on the whole time he's fighting Law for the first time in Dressrosa, I'm going to call you a liar. There's also a strong vibe around Dressrosa where the only reason the plot happens as it does is because Doflamingo is not allowed to kill some of the people that he absolutely would in-universe. Not to mention that his power is something that we aren't allowed to see him clearly kill people with because... evidently it would be really gruesome, considering the dismemberment we do get to see. Doflamingo just has the overall feel of a character that Oda has to "hold back" with, because even though Doflamingo would absolutely suit some more adult scenarios, he really can't explore that in One Piece.

The only other characters that I think of in quite the same way are the Vinsmokes, specifically Sanji's brothers. Like, as soon as I saw the scene where they were drinking an abusing a servant, I thought—and excuse me for the nature of this comment—"Oh, at least one of these men has killed someone during sex and just not cared." They're interesting characters, but god, the cold cruelty can be appropriately chilling. They do war crimes for a living, after all.

– I’m reading Doflamingo’s speech and the conversation between him and Tsuru again and I still can’t calm down.

– His entire speech is so great, and this is just the beginning of it. Tsuru’s expressions are such a nice touch. Their whole conversation, how he immediately deals with Tsuru not understanding completely what he’s trying to talk about - how she’s pointing out on Doflamingo loss, but he’s dealt with that already and he’s talking about entirely other things -/ 

And how she then starts patiently listening to him, with her expressions getting to this in the end

– Showing again how unstoppable Doflamingo is in his plans, intentions and schemes that he’s getting entertainment from all that’s gonna happen even now, like this, totally chained and imprisoned. Taking an adventage anyway. And just menacingly hinting to all of them, how everything’s gonna go down now.

– And Doflamingo’s showing yet again how he is aware of every world-system and standard. Moral system, power system, relativity in moral-system, relativity in any system, etc. Aware of everything and how it all works. One of the parts of his speech that got my attention the most, is him pointing out how ‘Tenryuubito better prepare to get dragged off their high horses because everything’s gonna go down now’. One of the biggest proofs of his awareness of the moral-system (and the thing he looks forward to too, because - destruction of the world a.k.a. the revenge against Tenryuubito, was his goal anyway)./ Also once again proving that he’s aware of how awful of a person he himself is/ but of course, he’s enjoying it to the fullest even now)

Yet another great speech from him and every bit of it is just amazing.
