On April 16, 1061, during the Middle Ages, the first documented homosexual wedding took place in the Iberian Peninsula: the union between Pedro Díaz and Muño Vandilaz, two residents of the parish of Santa María de Ordes, located in the municipality of Rairiz de Veiga, Ourense. This event can add a touch of color to a dark era, but the most striking thing is that it took place in the presence of witnesses and was recorded in a document that stipulated the conditions of their relationship. There was no ostracism or concealment. This marriage wasn't the only one of its kind in medieval Europe, but it is the oldest recorded in the peninsula. According to the official agreement, both parties promised to take care of each other and to share their assets as well as domestic and work responsibilities. “And if Pedro were to die before Muño, he will leave Muño the property and the documents. And if Muño were to die before Pedro, he will leave him the house and the writings,” reads the text of the contract, which was deposited in a grave until it was transferred to the National Historical Archive in Madrid.
